6 die from brain-eating amoeba in lakes

I knew a kid that died from this, it was a real sad story. He was swiming in Lake Summerville(Who would want to swim in that cess pool is beyond me) and he inhaled some water. A few weeks later he started complaining of severe headaches so they took to the doctor and they saw he had this amoeba and then he died like two weeks later.

yeah i caught this story the other day which has me paranoid because ive got some of those symptoms from this flu lol. i havent been in a lake or pool or anything but when the symptons are that close it does make you wonder. fucked up way to die though and sad that you cant go in pools or lakes anymore without fear of shit liek this happening.

there is no cure. The article mentioned they had something that sometimes worked in labtests but it was a far cry of anything to actually combat this thing effectively.

i read somewhere there was one if you caught it early enough but shit youve got 2 weeks to get help so ........

Yes, but symptoms start acting around a week later, so by then your SOL.
 
Maybe it's just from growing up near the beach, but I would never even think of swimming in a lake. Especially the lakes in Florida that are practically nuclear, including the ones for "water sports."
