So I've been trying to figure out why my wife's car ALWAYS smells moldy after a good amount of rain has fallen. At first I suspected a leak but have yet to find any sort of water damage. Has anyone had such an issue?

do you have a sunroof? do you have a hatchback? does your backseat fold down?

What kind of car are we talking about here?

LOL! My bad. It's a 2001 Honda Civic CX. Put simply, it's a 2-door hatchback with no sunroof.

daphatty,

Seriously do you wash it much? Sometimes the vents in front, of the FRONT windsheild can trap water and smell like mildew. If you wash the car or spray some good cleaner down those vents and then drive it a bit it should help.

Maybe there is some product designed for it but I have never needed it after a wash or two on my winter car.

Hopefully that made sense.

You may want to check the seal around the hatch back. My GF has a 2002 Civic EX and her trunk constantly leaks due to the seal. It's apparent after it rains and you open the trunk and it smells like wet dog.

I'll inspect that area a little closer. We don't wash it often since it's a city car and the car wash places in DC/VA/MD are THE fucking WORST! I just might take the car to a do-it-yourself spot and blast out some of the vents like snake suggested as well.

That happened to my car, too, and I actually found mold when I took the seats and carpet out. Mine was a combination of a gap in the seal near the side mirrors, and a vent that wouldn't close.

Exactly this happened to car I used to have. The rubber strip that holds the glass against the car had tears in it and water was getting in. Then mold was growing in the roof lining in the front side of my car.

Mold sometimes collects in your air conditioner. There is a cleaner you can find at any autoparts store. Its a can with a large tube. Use it to remove the mold smell from there.

Or you can try the cheapass way and spray Lysol down there...
