Nominations are now open for Biggest CAG Shopping News of 2006.
What was the biggest news in 2006 that affected (or will effect) your game shopping habbits?

Amazon Sells Video Games Direct / Toys R Us Departs from Amazon
Death of EBgames.com (Now mirrors GameStop.com)
Growth of Microtransactions / Downloadable Content
$250 Nintendo Wii
$500/$600 Sony PS3
The Wii console for $250
Ditto. At that pricetag I was able to buy a console within months of launch for the first time ever.

seeing crazy people in their PS3 pictures. I will no longer shop from ebayers who look like they need a good washing.
Price of Wii controllers... damn not cheap if you want nunchuck and remote.
As opposed to the bargain $50 360 and PS3 controllers....

The biggest shopping news is the beginning of digital download content rape.

QFT. Paying for cheat codes? Horse Armor Pack? $5 for crappy games that you can play for free everywhere else? It's not even close in this category, IMO.

Launch shortages galore (PS3, Wii, wii remotes and nunchucks).

Wii/PS3 pricing info (PS3's high entry fee, Wii's nickel and diming accesories)

3rd on this new thing called marketplace rape.

Definitely Wii controller prices. I thought it'd be about $40 for a set.. but no no no.. $60!!

1. Microsoft Achievement Points
it started showing up early this year in peoples signatures and i like many people who didn't get a 360 wanted to know what it was about and i ended up going next-gen shortly after.

i agree, i believe they are refered to as "microtransactions" i bet if i added up all of mine for the year itd be close to 50 bucks on nonsense.

Microtransaction Rape.

From charging $1 for a gamerpic, to paying for cheat codes & horse armor. And lets not forget about the whole Lumines debacle.

PS3 pricing....

or

The PS3 in general has been the biggest story. Its pricing, the raping and poor implemenation of ideas from the other consoles (motion sensing, guide button), the launch, poor sales (you can find them in any store, Wii still sold out), the negative press from devs like Gabe Newell from Valve, and exclusives jumping ship.

the wii price shocked me i was not looking to be sold a controler at $60 and the console at $250 would also liked it to have came in black.

Wii availability after all the "you'll be able to walk up and ifnd a Wii a week later" talk.

If that doesn't count, then pretty much every piece of PS3 news from Sony this year.

If that doesn't count as news then PS3 sticker shock.

This is not shopping news. My vote was resubmitted.
Wii and PS3 mania!!!!
I agree, every post that alerted us to a Wii and PS3 being available. I was able to purchase a Wii near launch day because of them and help co-workers get theirs.

This is shopping news, not industry news fellas...

I vote for the $100 Xbox 360 on Amazon.com. Nothing generated buzz on the Deals forum like that one did around the holidays.

You're right, thanks.

I'm going for the Circuit City price drops in June- I think that's why/when I signed up. I never made so many store runs in my life, and came away with a lot of stuff.

A close second is the heads up on Wii and PS3 pre-ordering- the sole reason I got mine.
My nomination is the entire PS3 launch everything totally flopped and was rather unexpected.
Agreed. Specific issues:
* too high of a price
* terrible launch lineup -- sports, sports, sports
* no rumble in controller? I thought next gen was supposed to be an UPGRADE

Thanks for bringin' it all back home, jrutz! I gotta agree with Amazon's $100 360 sale. It was a moment of singular hope, the kind you normally can only expect to feel while in a dream state... and then the gut wrenching disappointment of seeing your browser's refresh graphic turn and turn as the Amazon serves collapsed.

Looking back, I think it could also be argued that it was a real tipping point towards the insanity of the holiday shopping season with mofo's gettin' shot at the PS3 launch, the impossible Wii-seeking, impressive DS and PSP sales, and the absolutely absurd sales of the GBA.

The biggest for me was the discovery of CAG itself. CAG has completely changed the way that I shop for games... it's also thinned my wallet and significantly increased my collection of wrapped games that i'll "play later".

I agree. Paying for downloadable content. This is the biggest news for shopping habbits and will only get worse..........even though we will all succumb to it.

I was going to say the ebay prices for PS3s, but that's not really shopping enws so I'll say
Having to camp out for preorders
The end of the EBgames morning update.

No contest.
That was in '06? Man, it seems like it was three or four years ago (hyperbole, I know).

If that was indeed in 2006, I second its no contest victory.

The death of EBGames still stings. I had just learned the joy and excitement of the EBGames Morning Update before it was taken away.

has to be the downloadable content. We are getting charged more than ever now to play full versions of games. STuff that used to be in full versions of games is now being held out so the companies can charge us more in the end.
