The 2013-14 NFL Thread

Really nice matchups for the championship games. Couldn't ask for better games in regards to rivalries.

My guess for the rest of the playoffs:

49ers beat Seattle. NE beat Broncos. 49ers beat NE in the Super Bowl.

And? Maybe he just doesn't want to see it go to Foxboro, I have no idea what bringing up Niners rings was supposed to accomplish.
My point is that there was an implication that he didn't want the patriots to win because they already had too many championships when the 49ers have even more than the Patriots.

As a Niner fan, I doubt they can win next week. I said once Seattle actually clinched it was over.

Hoping for a good game.

At least there was a little bit of drama near the end of the Broncos game, but this weekend was a dud to set up for some good matchups next week. On one side, you've got two of the most accomplished veteran QBs in NFL history. The other features two of the most promising young QBs in the league.
Also conference title games with the preseason picks as the top teams in each league, which rarely happens.

Great game by Niners defense.  Their defense has played much better this postseason than last.  Carolina's lack of playoff experience really showed.  Their defensive players couldn't compose themselves and it cost them some pretty bad penalties.  Boldin and Harbaugh were guilty themselves but aside from them, the team seemed better prepared for the game.

By virtue of how the SF defense has been playing, I expect the Seattle/San Francisco game to be much more competitive.  The team is also relatively healthy and as long as Crabtree isn't more hurt than he's letting on (although it's been the team M.O. since Harbaugh came on board), I'll agree with the current Vegas Superbook spread at 3 1/2 points in favor of Seattle which means we're just a possession away from stealing one at their home.  The key will be how the Niners front seven holds up against Marshawn Lynch who the Niner's defense coordinator has described as the most difficult running back to defend against.  Guy is a moving battering ram and takes and gives out punishment like no other.

It's only fitting that the last major roadblock to the Niners return to the Superbowl is their arch nemesis.  I'll give Seattle a slight edge but if you had told me after having lost the Superbowl last season that if I would have to beat Seattle in their house to get another crack at it, I'd take my chances.  Go Niners!!!

Harbaugh is such a clown but damn he is a good coach.  Not a big fan of Boldin either for the way he carries on.  I do like the 49ers defense though.  That said, I hope Seattle wins a close one next week.  I think whoever comes out of this game will win the Super Bowl (although I would never bet against Belichick).  I'm glad the 4 best teams are left but those games were pretty boring overall.

Aikman was really ripping Boldin yesterday.

If the Patriots somehow manage to win the Super Bowl, Belichick deserves the Coach of the Forever award.
He may already deserve it. He is better than the second best coach in the league by the same amount that the second best coach in the league is better than my grandmother (she's dead by the way).

Went 1/4 on my picks but that one was my Niners. The 49ers will win next week. Seattle has peaked and isn't playing as good as it was earlier in the year.

The fact that a 46-year old former defensive back is saying he will play in the Pro Bowl is just another shining example of why the game should be finally be put to rest...

So...Deion is playing in the Pro Bowl. I guess that's a reason to watch...
Ya know what? I say good for him. Current players barely want to be there anymore. Might as well turn it into a Rock & Jock kind of thing. Lets get some more celebrities out there and just have a good time. The charade that it's "real football" is half the problem. I'd rather watch the QB Challenges (do they still do those? I haven't paid attention to Pro Bowl weekend in so long) than the actual game too.

Wiesenhunt is now the Titans head coach with Caldwell the favorite to get the Lions job.
So pumped for this. I thought for sure he was going to go to the Lions because they got to him first, and I was worried the Titans voiced their interest too late. It'll be interesting to see what staff changes he wants to make, but at least Whisenhunt has a proven track record. Munchak had just been a "company man". This is actually the first time the Titans haven't promoted from within since before Jeff Fisher.

Looking around the internet, people are bagging on Whisenhunt, but I think he's got a good football mind. In one year in San Diego, the Chargers offense saw a huge turn around. It seems like it was down to him or Mike Zimmer, but I think they made the right call going with an offensive minded coach. They need somebody to get that damn offense going.

I still see talk of cutting Chris Johnson too. Guy has rushed for 1,000 yards 6 straight seasons (every year in the league)...and everybody is bagging on him. Makes no damn sense. And the talk of replacing Locker...he was 4-1 this year. If he's healthy, he's obviously capable. I really hope Whisenhunt plans to figure out how to fix what they've already got rather than scrapping it all and starting from zero.

I read on profootballtalk that Deion isn't going to play. Also I don't think they do the qb challenges anymore and those were more entertaining then the game. If players didn't have bonus money tied to making the probowl the NFL would have probably gotten rid of it already.

I see through your reverse jinx. Nice try, Jed.
If only I had the power to do that.

Looks like the awful play to end the Saints season was a called play, that they implemented one week ago.

I mean. Could that call be any more stupid? They weren't snapping the ball with 2 seconds left.

Welp, after that dud of a game Sunday afternoon, I guess I'll be rooting for Seattle. Would really like to see them go up against Denver.

Looks like it's going to be beautiful in Denver this weekend.. 60 for a high. It won't be that new england shit the last game was played in..

Well hopefully the most overrated 10-4 team ever (or whatever you called New England) doesn't spoil that spiffy regular season that Peyton had. Would stink for him to lose and he and his teams be 4-11 against Brady.

I have no horse in this race, but just for entertainment's sake, what are you going to say if Peyton plays well and Denver wins? Why talk shit about something you have no control over? It's just going to make you look like a dumbass if you're wrong...and then you'll end up in this thread, lol.

Both teams are capable. Both teams could not show up. Let's see what happens.

you still carry around something I posted weeks ago? sucks to be you..

not the mention the Pats themselves are playing up the "we aren't very good" angle. The hilarious part of your post is (during the game) I saw the Pats Banner 16-0 regular season banner hanging up

I would say that the better team won. Like they're supposed to. All the pressure in the world should be on Denver and Peyton.

Only a delusional fan would think that New England is better, position by position, then Denver.

It's not even close.

However many of those Indy teams, as well as the Denver team that came to Foxboro earlier this season were also better teams position by position.

No outcome will surprise me (except a NE blowout; I just can't see that happening) but I would expect Denver to win by 10-14

the best quote I heard about the game is the that the Team that plays best should win (duh) but neither team is vastly better to get by with a bad performance.

But you're saying all that with an implied expectation for Peyton to choke. Who cares about "pressure". This game is no different than any other game all season. And personally, I thought the comment about the weather was good news for both teams. It means there will really be no excuses or justification for sloppy performances...on either side.

One could make the argument that Brady "choked" against the Giants in 2 Super Bowls. Sometimes the other team just plays better. There's a reason the game isn't played on paper. Like I said, let's see what happens.

I just think that Peyton is too good and will be able to expose the weak links in the Patriots defense. That and the run threat from Denver is good enough it will keep the linebackers honest enough where the secondary won't have a lot of support. New England's linebackers are very athletic and can cover short routes well.

The only way I see NE winning is if they can run and run for big chunks of yards. I understand they have been able to do that the past few games but it has also been against teams with less then stellar run defenses.

I would say it was a fair accusation to say that Brady, or the Patriots in general chocked in those games but he still has more big game playoff performances then not. He still has a winning record in the playoffs. In fact a win this weekend would give him more playoff wins then any other player.

It's the AFC championship. It is different then other games during the regular season. Are you one of those "their is no home court advantage" people? Despite home teams always getting 7 points thrown their way by Vegas? God they are dummies

The QB Challenge was THE best. Anyone remember the 16-bit era game? Soooooo good. Well, the challenge part. The actual football...eh...

I really liked all of the pre-game challenges and pro-am flag football stuff that they used to do before the Pro Bowl, which was a lot more entertaining than what the NBA has offered the past few years. It would be great to see a Rookie vs. Sophomore Pro Bowl game on Saturday.

Quarterback club was the shit. Well the first one was, the series went downhill super quick.
I actually still have the last one they made on PS2...QB Club 2002. I don't think I ever touched the actual football gameplay. But the challenges are still fun as hell.

(damn...an NFL game by Acclaim. Not that it was the best thing ever, but those were the days. I really hate exclusivity)

Considering the NHL has the skills competition, NBA has slam dunk and 3 point contest, and MLB has the home run derby...the NFL not having the QB Challenge anymore is asinine. Just keep Pro Bowl weekend in warm weather or dome cities and put some fun back into it. The money will come...and the players will follow. It's not hard.

As long as the New Jersey Super Bowl isn't a disaster, cold Super Bowls are in the NFL's future.
Yeah, but I expect it to be a disaster. Even if blizzard games make for legendary tales, pretty much nobody enjoys them and they lead to sloppy football. Why put your billion dollar cash cow in those conditions? Even if they get lucky with tolerable weather this year, it won't take long to see what an awful idea it is. If cold weather teams want to host the Super Bowl, build a stadium with a retractable roof.

A blizzard during the game would give the Super Bowl it's highest ratings ever. It's not the game itself it's people getting to the game that they really care about. If a blizzard hits at 2pm the shit has hit the fan. If it comes at 5:45 they would be fine with it.

There are going to be so many people around here during Super Bowl week.  I'm hoping to avoid everyone but I doubt I'll be able to.

For being a freakshow...sure. But personally, I don't think that's something that can sustain itself long term. People also want to see high scores and long passing TDs. Wet, snowy, players falling down conditions aren't going to lend well to that part of the excitement. People aren't going to watch too many 6-3 games.

They will if it's like Detroit/Philly from earlier in the year.

And the people not watching is relative. They could play the game in Antarctica on FUSE and it would still be the top broadcast in America.

For a few years, sure. But even Wal-Mart and American Idol are dying. Nothing is unsinkable.

As long as gambling and fantasy football exists, as well as man's need to watch people bash each other's skulls, the NFL will be the top dog.
