Weeklong Deals:
Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Sale summary lists:

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

So I got a new headset recently and for some stupid reason I can't have both my headset and speakers plugged in at the same time. If only one is plugged in, it works fine. But if my speakers are plugged in and I plug my headset in, the sound coming out of my headset sounds really scratchy and static-y.

Is there any way to easily to switch between the two without having to go behind my computer, unplug one, and plug in the other? I can also plug them into the front, but my speaker cable doesn't reach that far... Maybe I can get an extension cable? I wouldn't mind unplugging/plugging cords as long as it's easily accessible, but not if I have to climb under my desk and reach behind my computer to do it.

Thanks CAG tech-support.

Edit: Nevermind, that may just disable the sound card altogether. Usually if you plug in your headset in the front panel, the device plugged in the rear panel will automatically disable. Your problem may be a feedback issue. Are the speakers off when you plug in the headset and how far is your mic to any speakers around you?

Not sure how complex your cables are:

Tried turners speakers off and on while the headset is plugged in and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Don't think the issue is the mic either, it is detachable but again, whether it's attached or not doesn't seem to make a difference.

The second one looks like it'll probably work, reminds me of a similar device I used to plug both my gamecube and ps2 into my old TV. Although I was kind of hoping I'd just be able to get a >$5 cable, but oh well.

Thanks to both of you guys though.

What type of soundcard are you using? It could probably be fixed by getting a decent soundcard, but that might be more expensive than the other suggestions posted.

Yea, if you don't mind plugging and unplugging then a <$5 3.5mm extension cord will do. (Assuming your speakers just have a single 3.5mm plug too)

Also try updating audio drivers if you have tried that yet. May not be the problem, but you never know.

It wouldn't hurt to try a splitter:

http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Speaker-and-Headphone-Splitter/dp/B00009WQSR/

That would be the cheap cable solution and I think you would just need to turn your speakers off and on and then use headphones when you wanted.

A bit OT but...

BundleStars has Warlock master of the arcane for $4 - a historic low.  The description reads a fantasy version of Civ 5.  Any opinions on the game?

Here we go again, people skipping good bundles!
No joke. I was referring to being bought solo - For awhile I swore off bundles, too much buying for things I thought I'd never play. Now I have non-buyers remorse. Anyway, point made! Wait for the next bundle.

It's a fantasy version of Civ 5.

Seriously, it's Civ 5 but with less diplomacy and more goblins. UI/controls are identical, to the point where the entire game just feels like a Civ mod. Nowhere near as deep, but I had fun with it just fooling around with the different magics, races, and trees. If you like the conquest aspect of turn-based strats, you'll get some pleasure out of Warlock.

Can probably find someone who will sell you a Warlock key for $1.  That said, it's a good game but has a lot of flaws due to limited budget and rushed production.  Warlock 2 is coming out in a few months and is essentially the same game with improvements so I wouldn't bother buying the first.  They'll probably give it as a bonus to preordering the sequel (which I'm considering) so you might find people willing to toss it out for free.

Edited to add: I agree with the indef's assessment.  The combat in Warlock is much much better and there's more emphasis on it with resources/unit counters/heroes/etc.  So while everything else is shallow (crappy AI, pointless diplomacy, nothing in the way of 'civics' or empire management) if you enjoy combat you'll like it.

>.> I didn't even know about that beta... doesn't matter I don't have anywhere to stream it to except to my laptop, as far as 15 feet away... Nah, I'd rather play on my desktop with a proper monitor.

You're not quite done.... BS:I DLC Strikes Back. ;)
is the dlc worth playing? i only have the season pass, would that be enough?

those are all > $5, fox found you one for < $5 :D

< is > than > in the cag world

People still run add-on sound cards?
yep, when i upgraded to windows 8, i was able to use my soundblaster x-fi card again. the via drivers for my motherboard audio were crap in windows 8 so glad i kept that card during my vista years. the onboard audio drivers constantly would crash on windows boot up arrrrrgggghhhh.

Wait what, you're considering preordering a Paradox game? WHYYYYYYY

I dunno if anyone's pointed this out but Super Sanctum TD @59c has 3 steam cards that are still selling at fairly decent prices. You'll get about  at least 40c back from them.

I think I played about 80 hours before I got tired of it, about the same as Civ 5. I'd say it's worth it. I found the gameplay compelling enough, although it's not a game you'll come back to over and over. My main complaint was the extremely generic setting, music, and graphics. But I got a hell of a lot more play out of it than Fallen Enchantress.

I didn't know they were doing Warlock 2; thanks for the heads up. I'll look for it in a year when it's bundled; they should probably have completed patching the game by then. ;)
