Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.

I agree, some of the people were the same but unless to me its a series where unless Ken Levine is involved it is a bit soul-less. Kind of like Monkey Island without Tim Shafer, or Mario without Miyamoto. I think it was a bit of a cash grab end of the day.

Irrational wanted to move on to new ideas and 2k wanted to capitalize on the Bioshock popularity. It was a great opportunity for the people who left to grow and branch out. End of the day though, they couldn't change the formula and had to remain faithful to the source material. On top of that they were incredibly misguided and tried to implement a multiplayer mode no doubt put in to help sales in the demographic. I think the game is very good but I don't know if it could ever get out of the original's shadow or meet expectations.

For me it's simple: Bioshock made me think about the way games are made and the role of the player in interactive media. Bioshock 2 was a good action game. Bioshock Infinite was lacking compelling gameplay to me but made me think about the political significance of propaganda and using patriotism/religion to do great evils in the world. So for me I think Infinite was a more important cultural piece of work for video games than Bioshock 2 but was no where near as significant as the original Bioshock.
I think where Bioshock 2 excels is...in its DLC.

Simply put - Bioshock 2: Minerva's Den DLC is everything the B2 base-game should've been.

EDIT:

Amazon sells the digital code for 4.99 right now....it looks like it might be region locked to North America though:

http://www.amazon.com/BioShock-Minervas-Online-Game-Code/dp/B00FL07QUQ/
Minerva's Den DLC is great.

It takes everything I liked about Bioshock 2 base-game (i.e. majorly improved gameplay tweaks & combat) + also adds what was missing from Bioshock 2 base- game (a very personal story, some great characters, and some new areas to the mix).

I don't believe I saw if anyone mentioned this earlier but South Park: The Stick of Truth is live for pre-loading if you're into that sort of thing. :D

Plus, it's only ~4.2 GBs. I'm kind of surprised, but then again how massive could pseudo-construction paper graphics and animations really be? :whistle2:k

I don't think they were looking to change the formula just yet. They felt like there was more to be said about Rapture, and Ken Levine has ADHD and has trouble doing the same thing twice. Honestly, it was less of a sequel and more of an expansion pack (as we remember from the days of old when games still came in boxes).

The multiplayer mode wasn't horrible but, yeah, it was likely the result of the marketing guys wanting to add an unneeded bullet point to the back of the box. It was also a nice hook into that fat DLC money that was just coming of age.

The story was not as deep as a Ken Levine game would have been, but it didn't really need to be. The genius of the setting had already been unveiled and the big improvement was in the gameplay. And, to be fair, there were a few "wow" moments in BioShock 2 as well. It's a worthy entry into the series.

BioShock Infinite has a real head-scratcher of a story, but the game clearly wasn't what they wanted it to be. So much was cut from the original vision that parts of it just seem like a facade. It seems unfinished. And judging by the way Irrational got shut down, I'd say that's probably not far from the truth.

Fun fact for reading this far: Steve Gaynor was the lead designer and writer for Mineva's Den. He's the founder of The Fullbright Company (Gone Home).

These games have been bundled before but figure I'll mention it; another of the deep discounted games on Steam is the Shadowgrounds Pack for $1.29 (90% off).

Includes

  • Shadowgrounds
  • Shadowgrounds: Survivor
Both have Steam Cards.

They can also be bought separately if you have one or the other, but buying together will save an additional $0.39.

After a couple tweaks and installing Classic Shell start menu, I was like

I ain't gonna lie, I couldn't get past that first boss so I guess that's the end of the line for Boobarella and me.

I wish the 2hard4u devs would think of us lame, out of practice, ain't nobody got time fo' dat types and make easier easy modes or hell I'll take a cheat mode. With my backlog and I don't have the time or inclination for challenge. It's all I can take just to get the hell through games period.
Here's the thing... it's not really THAT HARD to beat the boss! Once I figured out his pattern and got used to the character's dumb gunfire limits - seven lives later - I beat him in less than a minute. It's frustrating, but once I got back in that mindset I had twenty years ago... boom. Dead boss.

The achievements are going to be a true pain in the ass to get.

In other news... if you have a PlayFire account, they added rewards for playing the old X-Com games for the first time, so if your account works, and you have never touched the games, it might be a good idea to install them for the 50 UKcents.

It's funny that you compare Levine to Schafer because both of them have problems with management and keeping budgets in check.

Bioshock 1 is good, but very overrated by people. The only thing it did amazingly well was have an absolutely fantastic and unique setting. The gameplay left a lot to be desired. BS2 improved it a lot, and Infinite even moreso. I also thought the story in both 1 and 2 were very childishly written and lacking, Minerva's Den and Infinites stories were way better than both to me honestly.

I would also imagine they will do a 'recently/currently on sale' section at some point along the lines of the 'Recently updated' feature. Then again given how long it took them to implement that essential feature it may be quite some time before we get one for sales.

And the Recently updated doesn't scroll as far as I can tell. It just picks a random three and then you have to click through for the rest, which is not the best system but it's something.

I can't do the 20 years ago mindset. I just don't have the patience for it anymore.

I admit I'm like Y U NO LET MEE BUTTIN MASH?

You know, those Playfire rewards actually encourage not playing your games because once you've played them if one of those 'Play for the first time' rewards comes along you're screwed.

So my "Four In February" was pretty successful:

Pokemon X (3DS)

My GF has it. I installed classic shell first thing, but I still want to projectile vomit any time I accidentally get on to the ~METRO~ screen.
With StartMenu 8, I can set that however I like.

I pretty much set it so it always brings up Win 7 style Start-Menu when I click on lower-left hand corner or hit Start button on the KB.

I have it set to hit some kind of shortcut hitting two keys, to bring up Metro - I forget what it is set at.

I'd have to throw on the laptop and look at it.

I rarely use Metro.

I use Classic Shell, too, although sometimes my mouse goes off in a crazy direction and I pull up the Metro UI... oh God... the horror.

Pokemon X (3DS)
You're not fooling anyone, there's no beating Pokemon. I mean, geez, the National Dex has completely separate entries for 5 different languages. Now you not just have to catch em all, you gotta catch em all in 5 different regions! That's sick! I remember when beating the Pokemon League meant something.

Pokemon is most of the reason it took me a month to beat 4 point and click adventures. It was Elite Four for February for me.

I can't do the 20 years ago mindset. I just don't have the patience for it anymore.

I admit I'm like Y U NO LET MEE BUTTIN MASH?
It took me a while to get the hang of it too, but playing through Dust - twice - got me back in shape.

I don't think I'll be able to get a fourth game for February, so... I fail.

Well... you'd know this if you actually stooped to playing games...

The Plan - 5 min

Love - 30 min (could be done in less)

Brothers - 3 hours.

I can't comment on the rest.
Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD : 8 hours
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons : 3 hours
Freedom Fall : 1.5 hours
Love : 15 minutes

Do not remember the rest :)

I haven't used Classic Shell.

But, yeah - w/ you stating that, makes me glad I put StartMenu8 in...so that I don't have to deal w/ that unwanted pulling Metro crap-up. It's delegated to whatever KB shortcut I made it.

Possibly someone who bought AC4 on a console but wants this on PC?
If one owned AC4 on console, wouldn't one just wait to get AC4: Complete Edition PC when it gets cheap?

Who the heck wants to get double-dipped on so expensively?

Hmmmm...Maybe Neuro - I think he's bought Mass Effect series on numerous times on numerous different platforms. ;)

HA! My time on Call of Juarez was 39 hours .... now I don't feel so much of a lightweight

(though a lot of that time was prolly AFKing)

neuro yup like so many times pasports u remeber the neuro info

GetGamesGo has Rome Total War Collection for $1.81 (86% off), even lower now for $1.45 (89% off).

The Rome Total War Collection contains:

  • Rome Total War
  • Barbarian Invasion Expansion
  • Alexander Expansion
Activates on Steam.

Quick check on ITAD shows this is a new historical low, previously $3.24 from multiple sites.

Also, Total War: Rome II is on sale for $26.97 (55% off).
Anyone know if GGG's keys for Rome: Total War Collection is ONE key?

Or Multiple separate keys?

Reason being: I'm only missing Alexander expansion here.

That's a nice list right there, I like your choices.

My "Four in February" became:

-Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (2/5)

-Gone Home (2/7)

-Element4l (2/9)

-Love (2/20)

-Super Mario 3D Land [3DS] (2/22)

-Card City Nights (2/24)

-Batman: Arkham Origins (2/26)

-The Plan (2/27)

Thanks everyone... I guess I should have been more explicit... I'd picked up from before that I should play BS1 before BSI... but is playing BS2/Minerva's Den important to play before BSI.

BS1 has such status that I really should play it (I've owned it since $5 retail.) I know BS2 wasn't that well received... I was wondering how important it is to play BS2 before BSI.

Amazingly I actually know very little about BS1... underwater, little girl, big daddy, and a wrench. (Please don't spoil it. Sure sound like child abuse though.)
Play it all in this order:

Bioshock 1

Bioshock 2 (base-game)

BIoshock 2: Minerva's Den DLC

Bioshock: Infinite (base-game)

Bioshock: Infinite - Burial At Sea, Part 1.

You honestly should play them ALL.

I would recommend playing at least Bioshock 1 BEFORE you touch Bioshock: Infinite. Bioshock 1 players right off the bat should notice similarities, references, & other nods that are placed in Bioshock: Infinite.

You surely do want to play Bioshock 1 before you even touch Burial At Sea, Part 1 - since Burial At Sea, Part 1 takes place in Rapture (the underwater city in both Bioshock 1 + 2).

I don't think playing Bioshock 2 + Minerva's Den is necessary to enjoying BS:I - but, you should play those b/c they're still at least good. You especially should play Minvera's Den DLC - it's great.

I'm going to build a large structure in Rust tonight on a mostly empty server and count that as one in February. I can't stop playing games with no real end. Doesn't really help my backlog, but I'm having fun.

I'll grab NZA 1 & 2 + Pound of ground... anything else worth? One I'm considering is Take on helicopters DLC (hinds, looks great!). Still haven't played that game... how it is? A hard simulator? A fun game with a touch of simulation? If it's too real I won't like it, have no patience to learn a hundred buttons and commands

My four in feb

- Finally finished purse owner 4 golden

- Blasted through FIre Emblem: Awakening on like 2 weeks worth of commutes

- Risk of Rain

- Mario & Luigi Dream Team (zzzZZZZzz)

I loved Age of Mythology, really happy to see that coming to Steam. Ensemble Studios was one of the few developers that made RTS's that I could actually tolerate.

Damn... awesome drop. PM'd for Valdis, but I'm probably way too late. Or not! Thank you! :D
