I guess I probably shouldn't admit that I own both Postman and Waterworld on VHS.
*kneels* Shall I kiss your ring?

I have a feeling that if you wrote that on a sign and posted it on your front lawn it would work better then any alarm system, but in all seriousness I actually like those movies.

I feel like you all are knocking the Forbes review for writing intelligently.  People who don't even want to spell things out (ex: IMHO, tl;dr) and we forget that language was created to invoke learning and express ideas.  It was not made to get to the end of the sentence fastest.  Maybe he uses big words because as an English major he read a lot and learned a ton of new words that are slowly being removed from common everyday language.  So whether he uses a thesaurus or not, be grateful someone is still using our language as intended on the Internet.  I hope I never read a journalistic article where they just make up acronyms for phrases as opposed to typing them out.

Too long;didn't read: Using big words in journalistic articles isn't always intended to be elitist.

No, I think you are missing the point: the goal of communication is to express ideas clearly. This is not the same thing as writing on an 8th-grade level. However, if you're writing as an exercise in displaying what you learned in your three technical writing classes in college, you probably shouldn't be writing for a general audience at all. This article appears to be deliberately written in such a way as to suggest that the author is an arrogant jerk who looks down his nose at people who aren't of the opinion that videogames are the lowest form of human endeavor. I have an English minor and I can construct an erudite and abstruse sentence if I so desire but there's a time and a place for that style of writing; popular publications aren't it.

Side note: reserving a game that is meant for people who voted for it but voting no anyway seems like a really crappy thing to do. Either go all in or leave it alone.
I was just gonna give the code to someone who wanted it more and missed the promo because 5000 keys and I need more keys to give away, but you're probably right. Since it's a bit late to pull my e-mail out of the promo and keep my vote as No, I changed my vote to Yes. I'll even screencap it if you want. :p

Agreed. You can't whore yourself out and hold onto your principles at the same time! What are you, a senator?

edit: WHOOPS! Forgot for a sec that senators have no principles. My bad!!
I guess I'll join the rest of you unprincipled whores then.

For me, it doesn't fall into the "terrible" bucket. I've played worse.

It's not a game I'd recommend anyone buy, but if you happened to have picked it up in a bundle or for free it probably isn't the worst game in your library.

I'd give it a solid three Peaches Geldofs out of a Kurt Cobain.
Agreed. I wouldn't have bought it or anything, but if you got it for free (or even in a bundle down the road), it's worth playing to see if you like it or not. It gets a little tedious during the harder battles, but there are plenty of upgrades to keep things interesting from level to level. The Playfire rewards just make it all the sweeter.

66% off Pinball FX2 - Star Wars Pack - $3.39
66% off Pinball FX2 - Star Wars Pinball: Balance of the Force Pack - $3.39

This better not be another franchise that will now cease to hit 75%+ off.
Considering the highest* discount they've had for the Pinball FX stuff is 50% on 360, I wouldn't be surprised. But who knows? Maybe it's just because those tables are licensed. Maybe they'll see a 1-day sale on the 4th for 75% off.

Good point that I didn't really think about. I know I've had times I speak to people with very poor grammar, and receive dirty looks when I start using words with more than 2 syllables.

Trust me, I appreciate someone who uses the language well. I still feel like you can write in a manner that flows better. In my opinion, he has an overly complicated way of conveying his thoughts.

Or maybe I'm just too stupid to appreciate it? :/

Our language is intended to communicate and express ideas, not to be unnecessarily superfluous. And using big words cuts off your potential audience base, which defeats the primary purpose of language...to communicate you need people to listen.

I read the first page and just gave up lol.  I have a high school education at best, but I can appreciate someone who has a way with words, but the poor guy just tried to damn hard.  For god's sake the title is "Is Dark Souls II The Worst Game Ever Made?". It clearly isn't, weather you like the game or not...

I read that article and among other things he was like 'I think Dark Souls is the worst game ever made...so I put 400 hours into it!'. Wait, what?

If I got 400 hours out of a single game in terms of value that would put that game near the very top for me.

I feel like this guy is trying to sound smart, probably due to the audience of Forbes who aren't a typical gamer audience. I also feel like he thinks putting in hundreds of hours in a game somehow makes him an authority to speak on it, ignoring the fact that it's somewhat insane to spend that much time on something you detest.

Speaking personally, I don't really care for Dark Souls but I'm not going to sit here and say it's the worst game ever made. It's clearly not. It's just not my thing, and that's fine.

Yeah even if you absolutely despise it, it's clearly not worse than something like ride to hell. It's just ridiculous hyperbole.

You mean the game that almost all of you bought despite me telling you that it has to be the worst game ever made because hardly anything works and it's simultaneously childish and offensive?

Just got a random 75% off coupon for Grimind (http://store.steampowered.com/app/265380/) in my Steam inventory that expires on the 14th. Makes the game $2.50 instead of $10. The publisher is KISS Itd, and I own a few of their games (Lucius, Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi, The 39 Steps, Milk of Ultraviolet, etc.) so that might be why I got it.

I get the point of the article.  I've sunk hours into games I thought horrible or shitty if I felt they were challenging.  Dark Souls is the uber-hard troll game of its genre.  There's a draw and a sense of accomplishment of getting things done in the game even if the entire time playing is frustrating.

But that's kind of the point and they don't try to pretend the game is anything other than that. Hell they even market it as a frustratingly challenging game. I get what he is saying but he's basically damning the game for being exactly what it says it is.

Then I think you didn't get the point of the article. I believe the last two sentences summarize it pretty well:

The longer I spend on these quests for achievement and advancement, the more I wish to have never begun them at all. I can think of no worse end to an undertaking than to regret its conception, and for me there can be no better measure for saying Dark Souls II the worst game I’ve ever played.

I just bought two separate Steam gifts for Serious Sam Classic FE and SSC SE not realizing that each gift actually includes both games plus the new Revolution freebie.  Does any CAG regular need a copy?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly WHY they bought it.

I would certainly accept them, but I couldn't promise I'd play them anytime soon if ever (but that's almost a given at this point).

The thing is The souls games really aren't as hard as people make them out to be. Just as long as you don't rush through and play stupidly it's not that bad

I did though. I read that part and it just means sometimes you sink a whole bunch of time into something and then when your done you realize how stupid it was.

Just realized I need to be on my PC at home to activate it. Never mind :)

Thanks anyway!
Is this a response to my SS games giveaway? I can send you the Steam gift and you can accept it when you get home. If you want. No pressure.

Unfortunately I am too busy today to respond to this in as much detail as I'd like.

First off I'll admit that being in the minority that actually liked that column might make me seem like an insufferable ass too; so be it, I guess. I decided not to take it as a review at all, but quite an honest and personal examination of this guy's gaming motivations and the strange hazards they can contain. I know many of you have busy family and work lives that only leave time to do what you love the most, and certainly with the sizeable backlogs that most of us have I think we all try to maximize the value of our playtime. But I think at this point that it's pretty undeniable that certain games, usually RPGs, pose risks to people that are vulnerable to addiction. You all said it yourselves: spending 400 hours voluntarily doing something you don't enjoy is crazy. He might be an extreme example, but I know that speaking for myself I've spent plenty of time on games that I regret- if only because I could have been playing better games! I think we should recognize that the headline "worst game" is just hyperbole and marketing designed to provoke an emotional response (and for all we know could have been added by an editor). But I have no doubt that DS2 might well be the worst game in the world for him.  I kind of glossed over the grandstanding in favor of reading the column more like a diary entry that just happened to have Forbes in the URL lending it the appearance of credibility.

Also, while he may have appeared to be harshly critical of gamers and gaming culture I'd guess he's aware that his criticisms likely apply to him most of all - not that that should prevent anyone being offended.

I did though. I read that part and it just means sometimes you sink a whole bunch of time into something and then when your done you realize how stupid it was.
Yeah but if it takes you 300 hours to form an opinion on something I think you need to reevaluate whether it's you or the game that's stupid

Crap. Yesterday I priced my Paranormal State cards a couple cents higher than I should have, they didn't sell and today the cards are worth less than half what they were yesterday. Moral of the story, don't get greedy on the Steam Marketplace.

Same thing happened with my last Croixleur card. Selling for around $.49 when I listed, now down to about $.24, thanks to people who don't realize anime cards are digital gold. Might just wait for a rebound once all the bundle keys have run dry.

Just made .16 profit on a To The Moon card. :p And another for .19 profit, list your To the Moon cards now.

3rd card made .18

Dumbass console peasant

hmm....

Defiance is going free to play on June 4.
I guess I should get back and defeat the character creation boss before it goes F2P... Ugh, summer and F2P and TV-show based, it's going to be crawling with teenyboppers. (Summer vacation was always annoying in WoW.)

Man... might snag Singularity at that price, considering I have $2.50 worth of steam bucks.

Should I assume these percentage off prices will change as the weekend goes on? In other words, different Activision titles will be 75% off on different days?

That seems like an optimistic assumption.

Yeah, I know about the Weekly they had. I even talked about buying it off someone on SteamTrades. I was just saying that they've been cheap with the discounts on 360 where it is also published by MS, so it wouldn't surprise me if they stopped doing 75% off on Steam, especially with the licensed tables.

They just put a lot of tables on sale for the first time 2 weeks ago though, which is when I picked them all up.

So, it's pretty much just a repeat of the Activision sale they had at Amazon recently. Meh.

Star Wars Collection looks pretty good considering I own 0 of the games there on PC. Hmm. Now that I think about it the only ones I own on console there are Battlefront II, KoToR1 and TFU2.

I think so but I wouldn't expect any of the IP that aren't big names to go on a deeper sale. My assumption based on the banner artwork is today is Spiderman day, tomorrow Transformers, Saturday Call of Duty and Sunday Prototype.

page_bg_english.jpg

I think there's almost no chance of Singularity, King's Quest etc going on a deeper discount at this point.
