I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing. Call for help! PM if you don't want to clog up the topic.
You should try the original setup recovery disk if you still have that. Try exploring it to find suitable drivers, because there's probably something proprietary that was uninstalled that you have to reinstall. If you can't figure it out, it could be hardware related and you should contact someone.

This is my cry for help. I don't know who else to turn to.

I'm going to keep on trying independently, and those funbags are fun, but I realize my AMD card is not being recognized by my laptop. This has happened since my laptop crash a few months back. I never recognized b/c the few times I did game on it, it was low-end stuff.

Actions thus far: Re-installed Catalyst Control Center & setup old drivers/new ones. Nothing. I have an "AMD Radeon HD 7570M/HD 7670M Graphics" - Running WIndows 8.1.

What happened during the crash, did you have to reinstall the OS?

And I suggest not using the recovery disc unless it's the final option. Those things wipe out the hard drive.

I'm going to sound stupid, but I don't think so. Took it to a local shop and came back with all my stuff on it (other than most installed programs).

Move the stuff you want to keep to a thumb drive/external hard drive/cloud storage. Use your install disk that presumably came with the system when you bought it to set it back to factory specs. This ensures that everything was as it was when the graphics card worked. If it isn't recognized at that point, you have a hardware issue. Very easy way to determine the problem. You should get something to back up your files on again anyway, considering your laptop has crashed before. It's not hard to recover from crashes, but it costs money to take it to someone else and have it looked at. Usually ~$50 an hour.

Been playing Nosgoth. Fun game, I think I'll pay those extra $5 to HumbleBundle to get that veteran pack, I'm also missing The Fall (I know, I know) and that battlestation game.

Sony and Toshiba laptops often have custom produced video cards - the stock AMD/GeForce drivers won't recognize the card. You have no choice but to download the GPU drivers from Sony/Toshiba's website. Which sucks, because if it's a newer OS unless they made drivers for it (rarely), the installer won't recognize the OS and shut down (made for Vista 64, won't install on a 7 setup, for example.)

There's very little workarounds to it. In some cases you can trick Sony's installer, but it's a huge PITA. Often you just have to stick with the OS the manuf specifies.

Guess I'll do a more recent backup and see later if I have that install disk.

It'll take time, but reversion is always possible I suppose.

EDIT: Recalling now, I DID reinstall the OS, or at least the shop did. It came back regular Windows 8.

This may be a longer standing issue than I previously thought, that is, it is an issue with Windows 8.1, as Vaio wasn't around to release drivers then.

Are there ways to revert to just regular Windows 8 while keeping files on the hard drive? I'll be backing up for now, but just curious. (my quick research says no, clean installs only, which is fine if I get the situation situated.)

For those who activated Dungeons: The Eye of Draconus, saw it didn't appear in your library and hassled the developers instead of me... the game should release and appear on Steam Monday at 5pm Pacific Time.
Did you just give us permission to hassle you?

Hmmm when did that sale start, seems odd that game to be a hidden sale.
It's on sale for the game's one year anniversary. Too bad nobody posts these hidden deals.

We're posting titty jiggle pictures and most of the thread these days is giving away extra bundle keys for needy kids. OT is the norm here now.
Yeah, it's funny how that's happened. Since Steam has been doing weak deals (or no new deals, like today) there doesn't seem to be much chatter about what's happening on that service. This thread is now mostly a compendium of Steam deals and a summary of other PC deals, but lately a lot of those have sucked too. So here we are with jiggling boobs.

This whole Stellars thing is weird.

I signed up, they didn't give me anything at all from what I recall. Ok...
Then I read about some people getting Stellars and I think I got around 7,000. Nice...
Then, it recently gave me around 3,000 more. It added up to a fairly nice amount in Bitcoins :)

Another $16 in bitcoin? Don't mind if I do.

I'm still doing my a system image of my system, but after finding my original purchase box I don't see a serial key or any disc. Just basic pamphlet. I don't believe I ever had it, nor does my laptop have a sticker with the 25 product key I need. I used a utility to find the serial key on my system, but it didn't work.

And so, I'll be reverting to Windows 7 I think. It's a simplier process and I think I can do it. And I've always wanted to anyway. Even if I can't get my touchscreen to work, and I should, I hardly use that as well anyway. Thanks for the help CAG BRO'S. Sorry to bother.

Here are bewbs: an apology, seems previous posts got them excised. I'll remove too.

I've had issues with this sometimes, they can hide the serials and no one, ever, ever, ever has their disc either. First, check to make sure your product key is not in the battery compartment (edit: I haven't messed much with Windows 8, never did more than a refresh). They seemed to finally figure out that the bottom of the laptop is a terrible place to put it (since it tends to get rubbed off) and I know some manufacturers hid the key there. Unless you got it from some shady dealer, it should be there someplace.

A few days ago, after going on a bit of a frenzy (piecing together a Windows XP Pro computer and a Windows 7 computer, with codes I got from other computers), I started trying to round up my serials. I noticed one oddity, which was that Belarc was insisting my MSI Wind has a different serial from the one on the bottom. I find that hard to believe though, but I'm not in a hurry to test that and find out what the deal is. I just took a picture of the (partially rubbed off) serial, for future reference.

At least I seemed to manage to do my two installs without Windows refusing either serial, although (and this seems to be the second time this has happened) Windows 7 insisted I had a bad serial, so I put it in again and then Windows 7 was cool with it. This might have something to do with my doing a clean install of Windows 7, vs the whole bloatware version.

Best Buy. I'll check soon enough. Nice protip.

I do seem to recall some sort of barcode there, but it's been like 2 years.

Even if I do find it though, I may try out my Windows 7 install, as this may end up being a good thing for me.

windows 8 laptops dont have serial key anymore. Its already embedded in the bios. Try to search on how to recall keys for win8.

I could give you a link but I'm using a phone atm.

So no one finds blood vomiting offensive? Because that's still there.

Short answer yes.

Double standards or something? peckers are fine but boobs are against the rules?

Also interesting, a bit of the booby stuff is still around in the Amazon thread.

I'm fairly certain I did find the key that's on my system now, may have a fresh install and so it won't recall the original. Feel free to send to me, just speculation, at least to a degree.

And mine perhaps might have it embedded unless M$ did it right when they came out. Got my laptop right around when Windows 8 came out and it was pre-installed.

Mods blindly nuke whatever more than one user reports (aside from good ol' vendettas). Doesn't really matter what it is.

Glad I read this, checked my account and I also have 3,000 more. Thanks!

Like was mentioned, W8.1 keeps it's activation key in the registry. I've used Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder (be sure to do a custom install to avoid all the crapware) for a while with no issue. Also, regarding your laptop's vid card, was it even showing up in Device Manager? Llike with a yellow exclamation point even or was it not being recognized at all?

Being recognized w/ yellow exclamation point.

Also had already done express custom install with Magical Jelly Bean. My activation key was for Windows 8.1 and did not work with the official Windows 8 or 8.1 download/activation thingamabob they offer. (The one that creates the download after putting in activation code)

I used what neuro linked. But I got my ms key before I reformat and installed a new ssd. I bought my laptop 2years ago and it has win 8 pre installed.

Do what neuro said and check your device manager if it recognize your video card. Also try to remove your battery and plug your laptop directly, maybe it will disable the on board video card.

Edit, there are some generic keys floating in the Internet they you can use when installing win 8/8.1 just don't forget to re enter your key once you finish installing.

If you had an W8.1 key, it won't work for an W8sans1 download and vice versa. I had that issue when I bought a used 8.1 laptop, but it wasn't activated. Long story short, I pulled the original W8 key from the laptop, reinstalled W8 and was forced to use an extra spare W8.1 key I had to upgrade. I hate the way MS has implemented the new OS product keys.

Definitely just going for Windows 7 after hearing all this. (Though I will try the battery unplug Invader Zim suggests first, just to check).

Moving over some files right now.

@Greenday: Does your bios have a setting for disabling the integrated intel video? If so, I'd try that first before doing something so drastic as installing a new OS.

Also, while it's fashionable to go 'OMG it's Windows 8 fault!' for every problem that crops up, FWIW I did turn up several people having your exact same problem with the AMD video not being detected by Windows 7 when I did a Google search.

I'm not saying a new OS install won't work, but it might not either and sooner or later you might have a reason to have 8 installed for some program or other. It's best to see if you can work out the cause if at all possible instead of an OS reinstall. They are a huge pain and I say this as someone who has done them way too many times (and when people say 'Oh just add that game to a shortcut to Steam I remember how many times I've reinstalled OSes and they all went POOF :p)

on profile: "I'm sick and tired of farming these cards which prevents me from playing games I want to play. Therefore from now on, I decided to give a bad rating for games that require 30 minutes or more between each drop. I guess it'll have very little impact on this system. My wish is that the cards are obtained automatically when purchasing a game.

This is unfortunately the only posibility to express my opinion."
