Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae manages to somehow be a worse arena fighter than Croixleur. The only meaningful mechanic is a bunch of royal guard nonsense.

Having said that, if you like skirts and thighs, this is your game. Absolutely top notch thighs.
Sold!

This looks promising. Looks like a cross between Valkyria Chronicles and Front Mission.

Welp, there goes any dream of Idolmaster ever coming over. What are you even doing bamco. Really.
Ah, that explains the drastic price drop (24.99 to 3.99). At one point, these games were like 55 bucks on the app store, weren't they?

Dark Souls 2's DLC had better level and boss design than all of Dark Souls 1 combined excluding that game's DLC. (Of course that's not hard, DkS1's own DLC already beat out everything in DkS1 lol.)

And Souls has not put out a single bad DLC pack yet so I think this is a save bet.

EDIT: Also the only people I've seen call DkS2 shitty are bad at it lol.
Dark Souls 2 level design as a whole is stupid and nonsensical. Not just in the context of the game, but they're designed in a way to only ever be looked at once because the overall design of the game eliminates all exploration with instant bonfire traveling. The DLC had some memorable aspects, but it's also full of what makes the rest of the game so disappointing: reskins of bosses (Nashandra fire version, dark Velstadt, blue smelter demon, poison Kalameet) "challenge" through gank squads, bad spells, and even more bad weapons.

The DLC for this game just shared the mentality that prevailed throughout the rest of the game, that being that quantity over quality would prevail in the long run. Having an excess of poorly designed areas and ideas just makes a messy experience, not a memorable one like Dark Souls or Demon's Souls.

As for being bad at the game, that's just a non-issue. The only correct way to play DaS2 is to get the latest version of the game. Not because it's fixed and it's worth playing, but because it's the only version of the game that has workarounds for some of its biggest flaws. The laundry list of what's wrong with the game has not changed, and the purest way to enjoy yourself remains to just not bother playing it at all.

I'm sure it's fairly evident that I just played through (and finally beaten) Gravity Rush. To be honest I don't see this as being a Japanese niche game but it certainly is Japanese. I honestly think that one doesn't need to love anime or Japanese pop culture to enjoy this game to its fullest though.

Just like my other reviews, I'm only going to cover insights instead of describing everything:

- Graphics, sound, artwork, music, and especially Kat - never looked or sounded better.

- 60 FPS!!!!?!!!!!ONNEOENONE Mind=Blown

-  Controls feel better here. I did have some issues with the Gyro on the Vita so I stuck to the sticks over there. I found it several times quite frustrating especially during faster-paced bosses.

    - PS4 Gyro - DO NOT rely 100% on it. Unlike the Vita where you can twirl your whole body and the screen, you can't twirl your TV around.

    - Best strategy: Use the analog stick to maneuver the camera for 98% of your turning and aiming, then use the controller's gyro to fine tune your aim. This comes in handy especially in later fights.

    - Once you get the hang of this, you should feel like you have complete control over Kat's shifting powers.

- Speed is life. Upgrade her core powers as quickly as possible.

- Khoei Takana gives a very interesting mix of orchestral and electronic musical score. It's a pity it's quite short - shorter than the game is. Certain pieces are fantastic but later pieces lose a bit of the charm of the other pieces you heard in the beginning. Still it's good enough for me to pick it up on the PSN store and more than enough to be an experience outside of the game.

Entering the spoiler zone - open at your own risk:

- First half of the game feels like a formula until you bring that last missing section of Hekesville back - stuff gets real after that...

- ...Then just when you have more pieces to WTF is going on - the credits roll! OK, so the cliffhanger is nowhere near as biting as the Legend of Heroes games but you can tell the story is far from over; in fact, it feels like a setup for a bigger story. I guess it's appropriate the story missions are called "episodes" as it does kinda feel like it's a little TV show with another season in the works.

- You can overthink the plot holes and unanswered questions - get ready to encounter many. Of course people who love time travel stories can fill in a few gaps...like who Raven is - was - um...is AND was. Gonna need a Raven meme with "WHAT YEAR IS IT?" on it...

And finally...

- Kat, next game you'll have a bigger budget. Feel free to buy yourself a set of pajamas and a bathrobe.

Finally got the platinum in IA/VT Colorful the other night. Great game, and the challenge of step-up mode was trying as hell.

Bring on, Project Diva X.

Where you get the idea that Dark Souls is full of greater design than Dark Souls 2 is beyond me. Both games are full of awful design decisions.

Instant bonfire travelling doesn't eliminate exploration any more than linear levels and warps did so in DeS or BB. This is nonsense.

Also, the poison dragon was better than Kalameet. As near as I can tell he wasn't a reskin.

Dark Souls (1) has one of the best level designs in gaming history.
This is laughably untrue.

As most people saw from the growing thread in the deals section, Nintendo's new account system has gone live: https://accounts.nintendo.com/login

I just want to remind people who sign in using an alternative method does not actually set a password to the new account. So you'll either need to edit a new one in or hope that they continue letting you sign in with those other methods indefinitely (including on other devices). Or at least until they decide to make yet another account system in another 5 years because they screwed up again.
