I was watching a review of Black Desert Online....OK cool graphics nice....but with popups....doh! And an in game cash shop for being able to customize the look of your character.....ugg...that's so Korean MMORPG.....ugg the combat looks pretty cool though. Yeah I think i'll wait....
Combat is great. Pop ups are removable. Character appearance change....yea that sucks, but if you end up loving it and investing tons of time spending a little won't kill you ;)

I remember one bro night Syntax named his char "Error CAG" or something and I was like "WHO THE fuck IS ERROR?" and he was like "Really, Fox?" and I was like "HOW THE fuck DO YOU KNOW MY NAME?"

Names matter.

DAI absolutely got great reviews and tons of GOTY awards. Although in hindsight, it wasn't all that amazing, and just had little competition that year.

About this ME:A news, it sounds like it's all multiplayer related including that "story recap". None of that stuff is in the actual game.
You're absolutely right. I don't know why I had that so mixed up. I know I was skipping it at release (ME 3 ending fallout) so maybe I didn't pay close enough attention and only remember a few articles about DAI not respecting players time... or something like that.

I've gotten it since then... Hell, I got the DLC edition of the game real cheap and it seemed like it was real quick too. Maybe that helped color my perception wrongly too.

As for the ME:A news I agree with ya. I'm sure they have all the MP stuff already finished or close enough that it made no sense to not release it. I know the RNG nature of ME3 MP made it a good enough cash cow for EA to be happy with it.

(Hell, it might have been the game that started the whole random card loot that you now see it Overwatch, Gears 4, and other games.)

It's very similar to others Korean mmorpgs. Heavy grinding + PVP/PK + cash shop etc.. If you don't mind classic traits from korean mmorpgs you can try to download a 7 days trial from the official Black Desert online site.

More like "If not being able to name your character what you want is going to measurably detract from your enjoyment, you should probably avoid this game because that will quite likely be an issue."

I did wind up buying it but you're oddly surly and defensive about a legitimate criticism. And, yes, each character I've made so far has had to settle for variants of their desired name because the original was taken.
Honestly, he can be as surly and defensive of the criticism as he wants to be... Its a legit complaint but not one you see most people write a game off with. And, honestly, I likely should have explained myself a bit better so I'll try that right now.

Your a business which needs money and your possible customers have are likely all suffering from the following (or at least some) of them. Limited time, limited funds, limited creativity, and/or limited attention spawn. You want someone playing your game not playing random name game because random name game isn't going to be the highlight of your game... but it surely can be one of frustration. It would be easy to shrug one's shoulders and close the game and never try it again.

Also, with it just being a demo and not wanting to use any good names I went with TempTest as my family name. Was a bit surprised that it was used but obviously others have thought along the same lines.

I haven't played many true MMOs (anyone who thinks The Division or the Marvel Heroes is an MMO has freaking lost it), I honestly think the only one I tried was Champions Online. It came out years ago and its naming convention is light years ahead of BDO. Yes, you have a username/family name and a character name but like I said the username only has to be unique to other players and the character name only has to be unique to that players other characters... Hell, the username isn't even shown on screen. (Besides yourself only your friends can see it.)

Sooooo...... Anyone, and EVERYONE, who wanted the experience the power fantasy of being an angry green (or any other colored) man punching his ways through the bad guy could and they could also name their character the Incredible Bulk so everyone could/would know who they where playing. (hulk, and really any other IP superheroes names where on the No list.)

Hell, you could even have multiple Incredible Bulk on the same street on the same server and the game wouldn't object. (Frankly, its pretty much the best naming system for a MMO where character's are locked to a sever.)

It leads to absolutely no disappointment when it comes to making a character... Yes, its a small detail but details are what game development really comes down to. Its what separated the great from the good. The good from the disappointing. The disappointing from the outright broken.

If Massive had been really into the details of their classless system then the game wouldn't have suffered from balance issues (which it still suffers from today), if they where really into the details of their engine then people wouldn't have been able to hide out of the map and kill people in the DZ, etc.

So when I see when I see a game that doesn't feature such a system a naming system when they know they will have 100s of thousands of players I can only think its because the developers aren't really focused on details and if thats a detail that escapes them... I can only question the detail they put into a combat system and game balance.

On to the actually game

Anyhow, even though I thought I had uninstalled it I gave it enough chance and it seems good enough... The opening cutscene runs crappier than the game itself so I was a bit worried that the great graphics wouldn't be on my machine. The controller support was better than some "partial support" but not perfect. Its certainly good enough to do combat with and save on some keystrokes. (I have carpel in my wrists, its not there most of the time but it can flair up at times.) I messed around to level 11 doing kill quests. I got far enough in that I figure I should either stop and not buy or stop and buy... As it was fun but I'm not sure I want to repeat it. (That stupid black cloud is rather annoying.)

So I think I'm going to buy the Steam version.

PS Oh since I tried the game now some poor angst filled teenager will no longer be able to play the game as JohnnyDeath. (Honestly, people on a trials shouldn't be taking sever space with names.)

So Steam says I played 3 hours...   Granted, that was allot of character stuff and I've enjoyed it so far minus one bug,  I had to restart the early part of the tutorial because the game wasn't registering me using the healing potion and I think my current quest might have had a bug also...  I couldn't find this guy I was suppose to meat by some cave and even the auto travel feature was hanging up on the side of mountains and whatnot.  When I got to where I thought it was to be....  Nothing.

(I also ended up in areas with level 30 monsters and I couldn't damage them.  Had to run.  So I have no idea what I'm doing.)

That's accurate, but all of those things are sort of inherent to nearly all MMOs at this point. I never touched the cash shop and had no issues with character/clothing customization and whatnot. Once you're far along enough, you can buy most cash shop stuff for in game money as well, from what I read, so it's sort of a SWTOR situation. It's really not that big of a deal and you don't even have to bother with it all.

I mentioned before, but the main reason I enjoyed BDO was the fact that it wasn't one dimensional, just slogging through enemies and fetch quests. I mean, it's an MMO, those are there, sure, but there's so many more things to do. There's cooking, fishing (even building your own rafts and boats), buying and selling and doing trade routes, taming horses, setting up farms and hiring workers, investing in towns and building your little empire, etc.

There's a near overwhelming amount of content and things to do in the game, but it makes it really neat and not just another procedural MMO that's nothing but killing shit and leveling up to go through an uninspiring "story" and hoping for funner end game content. It really is the closest thing to a Harvest Moon MMO out there, and it's great that the combat is actually really fast paced, active, and fun as well.

I wonder how long this conversation about not being able to name a character what you want and how we can't understand why that's a problem can go on? Can it be longer than that run on sentence? Could it be the next VRAMZ? Will MysterD write a thesis on how to not understand why something bothers another human being when it doesn't bother you? One can only hope.
Hopefully we can keep it going until we bring Trakan out of retirement.

The REAL question is:  In BDO do you have arsehats running around killing you while you're fishing, building your own little empire, or otherwise minding your own business?

Honestly, he can be as surly and defensive of the criticism as he wants to be... Its a legit complaint but not one you see most people write a game off with.
I didn't write it off either, but falling all over himself to dismiss it is weird. Some people have a few names they like using and they likely won't get them. Some people are happy facerolling the keyboard and saying "It's elvish!" or calling themselves "Drrizziztt". More to it, as you pointed out and I said to Fissfiss in messages yesterday, it's just shoddy half-assed design and lack of forethought. Even if you're 100% content with Grtashhedghfj as your name, they still deserve to be called out on it.

I messed around to level 11 doing kill quests. I got far enough in that I figure I should either stop and not buy or stop and buy... As it was fun but I'm not sure I want to repeat it. (That stupid black cloud is rather annoying.)
I've taken three characters up to level 15 now just playing with the classes (Dark Knight, Sorceress, Ranger; liked DK the best) and I guess the good news is that you can knock it out pretty quickly once you know the drill. Which I guess is another point of contention: I'm not sure when the game branches off but the beginning is very linear. Maybe that's an Asian MMORPG thing as most games I've played were Western and had distinct beginnings for different classes or races so you didn't have to grind out the exact same content every time. I guess Secret World is fairly linear to start but even that has the faction starts and quests.

The fact that you don't change appearance without cash shop purchases is terrible. Seriously. I could see gating off particularly ornate stuff or the sexy stuff but half the fun of getting new gear is seeing what it looks like.

Criticisms aside, I bought it because it looks nice and I was enjoying the overall game play and some reviews seemed promising. I figured it made more sense to buy now if I was going to play over the next few days than to start over from a deeper hole. I liked the combat though I'm not as enthralled with it as some. But everything I've fought has been very weak so combat has been brainless and I assume it's tested more as I find more threatening creatures. If I end up hating it in the end, it'll probably be after 50+ hours at least so it won't be the worst money I've ever spent. Dollar per hour, it'll beat Arkshot.

You can avoid PVP till level 45... after that you have to do the quest. Someone in this thread said if you avoid popular high level zones people seem to ignore you.

another azn grindfest MMO. sounds awesome lol

As a person who played when the game first launched in NA, BDO broke many promises from what the original release company (Daum Games, now known as Kakao Games) had said they would not do (such as allowing premium items to be sold on marketplace). You can call me salty.

Anyway, how'd you guys like Tay Zonday's voice in the opening cut scene? Chocolate rain ~

Yesterday I was watching some videos before bed and noticed this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMeaxj8k_3U

TF2 is a game that I'd relly want to like but almost everytime I play it I end up a little frustrated because of all the twitchy speedy gameplay that gets me killed after a few seconds of firefight and the matter of playing with people that are way more experienced than you doesn't help at all. :(

IF you buy BDO (explorer's or the other pack), DON'T use the damn Inventory upgrade or horse whistle until you know what class you want to play as it does not tell you it's character bound and not account-wide.

Waste of $45 upgrade.

RIP

That sucks. I haven't redeemed anything from the pack yet for that reason. Is the pet character-bound?

Idiot seems to know a lot from that game. He said he played the game before, but my opinion is it might happen frequently once you reach level 45. And I said frequently because everybody starts fresh on steam so there must be an influx of new players trying to level as much and fast as possible.

My bet is that once a month has passed there might be less PK ganking fest.

Edit. In case it wasn't yet clear. BDO is a heavily PVP game focused.

Me making my BDO pretty girls: "Ok, so I'll add a little eye shadow here to accent her hair color and a neutral lip tone and the eye liner to off-set and bring out the shadow color with a little blush...  That should look nice."

If you're looking for an interesting break in your day, go read the steam farcry 5 forums. Its amazing what people will come out and defend and somehow construe as an attack against themselves these days

Been playing Overwatch (PC) during Free Weekend, here + there both yesterday & today.

Done some Point Control, CTF, Payload - fun stuff. Really digging it.

Funny, I don't remember anyone yelling "But what about ISLAM!" when FC4 had arranged marriages and stuff for their pseudo-Hindu faith but now that it's a pseudo-Christian cult we need to go insane about how Ubisoft is too afraid to talk about the "real evil".

I might buy this one on pre-order just to raise sales and trigger the goofs. Plus, I gotta use up my zGold!

Now I'm interested. Could I pretend this is a survival game or will all the goofy looking whores running around ruin that?

Link please.

"Holy crap" @ those forums.

Anyways, I think FC5 with its setting, premise, and all sounds interesting. I'll be ready for it, when I finish FC4 + get Primal & FC5 price-drops, as usual.
+1, Im hopin for the usual glitches on fc games. I still loved fc4 and Im glad they're bringing back co-op, had a ton of fun running through that with friends. Should be a nice change of pace from jungles/mountains to more fields/streams/forests and american-ized towns

Now to bet on what the towers will be. Cell? Water? Church bells?

Also to quote one of the forum posts: "It'll be nice to have a radio that I can understand, however it will most likely be country so I won't listen to it."

Prepper outposts aka bug out locations.

I liked the FC3/4 radios well enough within the context of the games.  Much like how I enjoy the radio in Fallout 3 but wouldn't put any of that on my MP3 stick.

I never got into Primal.  I wanted to and Spoder was nice enough to hook me up with a glitch copy but I just couldn't get invested in the "Unga-bunga" and stone axes.  Apparently I need my Far Cry's to have English speaking psychopaths and anti-materiel sniper rifles.

Just a thought. Every person complaining about Far Cry 5 has a lot of problems if they're being offended at seeing a non-Christian cult led by a white dude, who controls people of all ethnicities.

If they're identifying with a cultist leader... they need help. Bigly.

I also fail to see the parallels between this guy and Trump, yet a lot of them bring him up. I wonder why.

fucking cultists.

FYI, Far Cry 4 Gold edition is $24 at Uplay this weekend.  All time low, unless you count the Origin glitch which I don't remember if anyone actually got.

Edit:

Does anyone know if I get a 20% off voucher with my Uplay points can I stack it with the sale?

I still don't have the FC4 Season Pass, even though I do own the FC4 base-game.

Are there any worthwhile DLC's for FC4 out there?

Hmmmm, I do wonder if the song "Go Outside" by Cults will be licensed in FC5.

Is Steam Economy Enhancer not working so well for anyone else?

Clicking on a card doesn't show the sell prices or buttons most of the time. Tried on Firefox and Chrome.

nope, pretty sure it cancels whatever current store discount an item has and slaps a 20% discount on it. So its basically useless
Thanks for the info. Was contemplating grinding out some actions to get one, but since it doesn't stack I will save my time.

FYI to All:

Scheduled Worms Clan Wars ($1 Humble tier currently), Creativerse (F2P), and Drawful 2 (Don't need to own it to play) for this week since there was nothing bro-scheduled.

Friday is BF1 as always.

What appearance do you mean? I believe you're allowed to change your character's face and whatnot once for free (in case you mess up or something). I forget if an early quest gives you this item or if it's an automatic thing or what. I only bought the base game when I bought it a year back or so, so I'm fairly certain it wasn't any sort of cash shop item.

Or do you mean clothing-wise? Different armors have different looks, and you can also unlock other clothing by leveling up your fishing, trading, etc that looks pretty nice. I also recall getting access to dyes without dealing with the cash shop, so I'm unsure why everyone seems to be under the impression that you can only alter appearance through the cash shop (or look like a scrub in rags if you don't).

Idiot seems to know a lot from that game. He said he played the game before, but my opinion is it might happen frequently once you reach level 45. And I said frequently because everybody starts fresh on steam so there must be an influx of new players trying to level as much and fast as possible.

That is a possibility. That said, getting to level 45 takes awhile... So if people are buying up the game to run around KoSing, I don't think many of them are going to put enough time into the game to do so.

It may depend heavily on the server type you join, but in the time I played, I'd actually say quite the opposite of the PvP focus. On the server I was on, at least, it wasn't like that at all. Most MMOs with PvP don't really have much in them to do besides run around killing each other, but there's so much to do in BDO that it doesn't seem like everyone is out for blood. I know that's definitely the case in certain areas (where people basically are going TO PvP since that's where high level players congregate), but in areas where you're simply trading, fishing, going through the story, etc, the general consensus is that you're really not going to deal with that kind of thing often. Not to mention I don't believe getting PKed matters all that much, and if you happen to run into an asshole, you can always just swap channels to avoid him.

For clarification, the reason I'm elaborating and talking about these things is because I don't think people should be turned off to a game for minor quibbles or slightly off-base information. BDO certainly isn't without its flaws, and the cash shop nonsense is always annoying (granted you can buy most of it with in game money, apparently), but it's honestly one of the, if not the most unique MMO out there, that does a great job at giving you may more to do than just run around doing fetch quests like 99% of MMOs. I'd hate for people to get the wrong impression and never give it a shot, that's all.

I am seeing some reviews for Worms Clan Wars that say online multiplayer doesn't work (alternatively other reviews say the people having problems don't have a clue). Somebody check that out before I waste a dollar.
