The old thread hadn't been updated in quite some time, so I decided to make a new one. If you happen to see a sale not listed in the OP, go ahead and post it and I will be sure it's added. The same goes for anything listed that has expired as most sales have no set time frame, let me know and I will remove expired sales. Thanks!

So you're returning it because you broke it? Wow.
Well, I think that's an oversimplification. I unplugged it during an update - the software and hardware haven't been dismantled or altered in any physical way. That's why I was wondering if I should keep it and try to flash it myself. It wasn't like I flashed it, broke it, and then tried to return it. There should have been a warning that there was a mandatory update required. Are you saying that you think that I should keep it and try flashing it myself? I actually appreciate the input here.

No, you broke it because you let it run out of power in the middle of a flashing.

You shouldn't try reflashing it yourself, and you shouldn't try to return it. Try the warranty route first.

Edit: If the warranty is no good, then there's not really anything stopping you from reflashing it and voiding the non-existent warranty.

Thanks for the suggestion. I could contact Razer directly via the phone number or their live chat to see if they will fix it or replace it. I'm a hobbyist with retro game machines, but I'm not particularly savvy at technical stuff like flashing devices. Ultimately, I'd just like to have it work as a backup Android TV device. Or work, period. Some guy on the Ouya forum was able to flash his Forge TV to get the original Ouya store as his front end screen. Don't know how he did that, but that's light years away from anything that I would be able to do. Thanks for the input, guys!

Even if you wanted to flash it, there might not be a publicly available distro that modifies the boot kernel to inject the flash contents anyway. You'd have to look that up.

Sweet thanks!

Eh, if a consumer device locks up that fast, I think it's okay to return it. As long as the bricking wasn't intentional. If a device can be bricked that easily, they need to expect a certain small percentage will get bricked out of the box by new users. If they want to prevent those returns, make it easy to unbrick a device somehow. But I wouldn't put all blame on the consumer and expect them to eat the cost.

OpenSudoku is my Sudoku app of choice.  Freeware.  No ads.  Not too many puzzles, but easy to import more and easy to manually enter puzzles.

While I'm at it, Shortyz Crosswords is my choice for crossword puzzles.  Those two are my most played games on Android.

Most devices don't have two bootloaders to prevent bricking when you interrupt firmware upgrades. It's just how it goes. And that's why I said go the warranty route first, instead of bricking something then sending it back to a third party seller for a refund.

Would you be willing to walk him through the process? It sounds to me like he's willing to hang on to it if he can get it working.

EDIT:

Flashing the firmware not the warranty lol. I'm not sure they'd honor the warranty at this point.

If you've got experience flashing Android firmware that might be all the help he needs.  I think the Forge behaves like a standard Android device but the custom firmware and how to properly flash it might be slightly different.

I drove to different places to find the USB-A male to male cable that I would need to hook up the Forge to my PC, and I couldn't find one. Surprising since they have male to male everything else in this town. Ba-dum-tish.

If I have to order the damn cable from Amazon and wait for that to show up, I might as well return the Forge TV despite the fact that I will feel shame at least until a replacement Forge shows up on my doorstep.

Probably too late, but some crappy laptop fans have these stupid cables that should have never been made in the first place.

I didn't know they made fans for laptops until right this minute. I assume that I would need to hit up Goodwill to get a cable by itself? This "doing the right thing" approach seems to be way more complicated than it needs to be. And I've been working late the past few days and haven't been able to call Razer during their hours of operation.

eBay is better for cables, adapters, etc. Is your cable in this listing: https://ebay.us/YakPFY
If you want one from a seller closer to you, just set the location filter on the left sidebar. Sort by lowest price + shipping and Buy It Now on the top menu.

I think my next step with the Forge TV might be to do what the guy in the PlayStation TV subReddit did when he was unable to whitelist his PSTV - get a hammer and smash it to hell.

Smash a PSTV? Hopefully he hasn't taken a look at the resale market lately because the value of it has exploded recently at $70-100 just for a used one.
Yeah, some of the people on that subReddit called him a murderer. I can't afford to waste $60, so I will figure this thing out somehow. But the pics he posted looked like he had put his damn PSTV through a trash compactor. Hee-hee!

Damn! I still haven't opened my clearance one yet. Was going to whitelist it, but haven't found a good set of instructions (haven't had time to look in awhile), but I'd be tempted to sell it at the prices on ebay.

I gave my stepfather one of the clearance PSTV bundles with the Dualshock 3 in it, and he gave up on using it after he found out that he had to create a PSN account to download the games. Ain't that a kick in the head? I'll get it back from him someday.

Oh, and Swordbreaker: Text Quest (no ads) is currently free on Google Play down from $2:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.swordbreaker2.game.android

You will have to change the language to English on the title screen after the opening cutscene. It's Shield TV compatible if sideloaded and works with a mouse plugged in.

It's weird. The PSTV is a better system than its reputation would suggest, yet I have little interest in actually USING either of mine. I got the first on eBay and the second from Waldemort back when they were quite affordable, and installed Henkaku on both. I gotta admit, though, I bought the second one for the included game controller first and foremost.

Er, anyway. After you've got Henkaku on the PSTV, running a white list is as simple as installing and clicking an app. I think you have to do that every time you turn it on, although the hackers may have fixed that with a script. Now that everyone's talking about it, I'm genuinely interested to try mine again! I'll have to dig through my big box 'o crap under my entertainment center to get it...

Also, Jose, you really, really should have known better than to turn off your system in the middle of a firmware update. That's a big no-no for electronics, and almost always ensures grief. The USB cables you described are indeed tough to find in brick and mortar, which is why I ordered several online... I think I used either Amazon or Monoprice.

You're right. You're right. And a lesson was learned here. A somewhat expensive lesson, but a lesson nonetheless. But I needed to leave my place in a hurry that day, and I never leave devices running when I'm not at home. So, to put this saga to bed, I'll be calling Razer customer support when I get off tomorrow afternoon. And if they can't honor the warranty, I'll ask the third party seller for an exchange. The good thing with all that's happened is that I still have the Shield TV. I played some sideloaded Feral Fury and Soul Knight on it this morning. Good times. And the Shield TV is a hundred times better than the Forge TV, but it'll make a good Android TV backup if I can get one that works.

Damn didn't know pstv had gone up, had thought about getting one for tv gaming but guess I'll stick with the regular Vita at that price

And, as an update on my dead Razer Forge TV debacle, I called Razer customer support and was told that they can't repair it because it was an "end of life" product that has since been discontinued. The guy that I talked to didn't even know what a Razer Forge TV was at first. So, back to the seller it goes. Not happy about that, but going through the headache of tracking down the right cable was just going to be too much for me to deal with. I'm sure that I'm going to hell now, but that was probably going to happen anyway with all the questionable decisions that I've made in my lifetime, and I'm too old to care!!!

Have a good weekend!

Something like that probably runs at 5 watts while updating. Updating it constantly for a month will be maybe 2-3 kWh, which is like 30 cents in most places. Is something like a dollar a month really worth saving for all that hassle?

If people got rid of their DVR, which probably uses like ~200W, will cost like $15 a month to run, even if it's not recording anything off.

I never leave devices on and/or running when I'm not home either. I have this weird fear that something will catch fire if I do.

I always leave at least 2 computers going when I go to work. Sometimes I'll leave a few gaming systems on to either rack up hours to unlock things or download an update, too. My house basically uses more electricity than Thor did in the bridge scene in Thor: Ragnarok.

Ooh, ooh! I know this! The Merge Cube is this squishy foam cube with patterns all over it. You hold it up to your phone and graphics are projected onto it. Well, they're projected onto your phone's screen, anyway.

It's augmented reality, but it doesn't work so great because you have to hold your phone and the cube all at the same time. It's better if you have a VR visor, but even then it's not great. If it tells you anything, they were selling them for a buck at Wal-Mart and people still weren't buying them

ArugulaZ, I can always count on you for the lowdown. I thought that the Merge Cube was some sort of contraceptive. And I was hoping it was one for ladies.

Well, it is effective birth control. I've got one along with all my other video game crap, and the ladies won't go near me.
Right. I think I recall one of those cubes featuring in an episode of Seinfeld. Something about not being sponge-worthy.

Well, after looking up a photo of it, it looks like if you get bored, you can at least summon a cenobite or two with it.

Ultimate Chicken Horse is back up on Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.CleverEndeavourGames.UltimateChickenHorse&utm_source=nvidia-web&utm_medium=nvidia-web&utm_content=detail

According to one of the developers on the Shield TV subReddit, it coincidentally "mistakenly" disappeared on the same day that the game launched on the Switch. Coincidence? I think not.

And it's still $11.99 on the Play store. So no deal.

In other news, I was finally able to reset my Razer Forge TV back to its factory settings by flashing it with a system image from the Razer developer website.  Then, I found out that it won't recognize external USB storage without a custom image, so I'm back to square one unless I only want to play Google Play Android TV games on it.  Ugh.

I'm gonna do it.  Just not tonight.  :oldman:

There's too many dang games to know which are worth our time... JoseKortez, any of these stand out as games not to miss?

Thanks!
Walletandgromice, I recommend that you quit your job or school, cut all ties to your relatives and friends, and fake your death with an elaborate scheme that involves doctored paperwork and a stunt double. That way, you'll have plenty of time to play these.

If that's not an option, you're not trying hard enough.

If you try harder and that still isn't an option, the following games provide a good value for the money:

Death Worm
Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic
Pocket Rogues: Ultimate Edition
Reigns
Reigns: Her Majesty
Shootout on Cash Island
Unreal Estate

And don't forget you can get a refund within two hours of buying any app on Google Play if you don't like it! Just don't abuse it. ;)

Konami has put out a collection of picross puzzles for iOS and Android.  It's free, has no IAPs, and has a ton of puzzles (it looks like about 500) themed around Konami's franchises.  Although the listing says it contains ads, I haven't seen any in about an hour of playing it.
