Hopefully Ubisoft had a few reps there. All of their Pro patches have been messy.

All this nerd tech talk.. barely any games, majority of titles still can't hit locked 60fps (unless they are from last gen) or are barely doing it with crutches like FSR and upscaling. UE5 games are upscaled from 1080p to "4K" to push tv sales :ROFLMAO: on base ps5 many times they upscale from 720p...

Detachable drive is sold out everywhere, ebay and amazon scalpers are dumping it for $160

and they still didn't fix shitty controller drifting cause why would they when they can sell you a new one in two years for $90

Maybe it's me but I have not had a single PS, XB or pre-Switch Nintendo controller have drifting issues and I've got thousands of gaming hours per year from the SNES to PS4 days (time much harder to find in the PS5 era). Hell I didn't even know what stick drift was until I played my brother's NS (launch model) and then my NS had it too (2019-ish? model). OLED model hasn't had any issues though.

I also have never had any stick drift problems. my kids did with their joycons, but i thought it was just because they left them stick side down all the time. I also had gamestop try to give me a refurb on a brand new, never used controller for stick drift so that really made me wonder if their machine thinks a brand new controller has stick drift what is it even measuring.

before the Nintendo Switch I had only seen it on Nintendo 64 controllers that were destroyed by Mario Party, used PS2 and Xbox 360 controllers from Gamestop, and cheap third party controllers my cousin would buy on N64/Gamecube, It never happened on anything I bought new, now it’s extremely common on the Switch and Series S/X controller. I even had a Splatoon 2 Joycon start drifting a week after they came out. I sent it to Nintendo last year and it was drifting out of the box. 😑

I’ve only had my PS5 for a month so far. I heard they get stick drift too. I’ve had friends go through PS4 controllers like crazy, but I’m still using the one that came with my PS4.

I have a lot of controllers and never saw drift with any of them, so I just chalked it up to people mistreating their controllers. Then I had it happen to my Starfield Xbox controller, I think due to some of the mechanics in the game with needing to press click the stick a lot while using it. I ended up taking it apart and using some contact cleaner on it which seemed to fix the drift, but the Starfield controller has been permanently retired.

Luckily I’ve only had one controller with drift. Unluckily, it was a LE Halo controller that got it. Not so bad I can’t use it, but bad enough that I don’t use it. Have enough controllers to go around

Got a PSVR2 from my kids for Xmas and set it up today. Had to reset the right controller three times for it to work with Horizon because of that calibration/X button glitch. Hopefully I don’t have to do that every time I want to play the game. It’s bonkers that that is even a thing this far after release.
I grabbed After the Fall from the sale… any other recommendations? I have a PSVR and got all of those PS+ games from way back. Not sure if any of those have upgrade paths or not. I was looking at Beat Saber since I never pulled the trigger on that.

Are you asking if VR1 games have upgrade options for VR2? My understanding was VR1 games are not compatible with VR2 in any fashion.

You should try asking this in the VR thread but a better option is the psvr Reddit. Sony has been really lagging with creating upgrade paths with a lot of psvr1 games, but you can find a list of the available ones. I play Gran Turismo 7 often. It's an absolutely amazing experience. There are threads about which games to buy from the current sale and I highly recommend you check out the YouTube channel psvr without parole. There are also psvr 2 games with PS premium like kayak VR, Star wars, walkabout mini golf and humanity and more which are really good games.

Arizona Sunshine and Thumper have upgrade paths for $10 and $5. Figure I’ll get Arizona Sunshine since I never even played it the first time around.

I got mine a while ago, but finally had time to set it up over the holidays. I caved and bought Beat Saber even though it doesn't seem to go on sale. It's fantastic. I also have Horizon from the bundle, but haven't tried that yet. Another option might be to subscribe to PS+ Premium for a month if you aren't already. They have added a few PSVR2 games over the recent months. It might be a cheaper way to try out several games if you have time to play them.

Ghdbsn dcsv, I'm new to this forum, as well as new to using ps. I recently bought myself a used PS4 slim in very good condition. But I don't know what to play. I downloaded the Genshin impack, but I can't get used to the controls, is it in all games so uncomfortable, or is it only in this one that the controls are so layered?

My Top 10 Games of the Year list is out now.
Did you not play any of the following games?
  • Animal Well
  • Black Myth: Wukong
  • Dragon Age Veilguard
  • Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
  • Helldivers 2
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
  • Infinity Nikki
  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
  • Silent Hill 2
  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
It's fine if you didn't since I didn't play most of the games on your list but I mean, some of the games I listed are FANTASTIC so it's difficult for me to believe that the games you played are better than them. I know these lists are subjective and not everyone can play every game out but my list includes some of the best reviewed games of the year so I was just curious if you played all of them.

I've played all of those games, but three. Check out the text above the list and see me write about some of them that almost made the list and why.

There was a good month or so early in the year where I was displaced due to a fire in a neighboring apartment building (everybody got out fine), so I was without most of my stuff for a few weeks before being able to get some things until I could get a new place to live and move the rest out of it.

Okay I see. I somehow missed some of the games I listed in your article. I saw you mention a game is Zelda like but you didn't actually play the new Zelda game that came out? Maybe I'm a little biased because it's my favorite series but man, Echoes of wisdom is amazing. That one really stood out to me because you mentioned Zelda like but I didn't see any mention of the new Zelda game.

This is not directed at you but pretty much the games industry as a whole. I was listening to a recent episode of game scoop and not everyone played all of the nominated games of the year. It's just mind bottling that these guys get paid to play video games yet they haven't played all the games that were nominated by the company they work for. I mean, how is that even supposed to be a justifiable opinion? Let's say 50 people work at IGN and only 20 of them have played all of games that were nominated. Is it like an honor system? How can you vote for Game of the Year when you haven't even played all of the games? Do they just get a bunch of people in the room and say okay, who's played all of the games on the list? Okay you 20 get to vote, the rest of you go home?

I'm thinking a lot of these gaming websites have people voting in categories that they shouldn't be voting in. I guess it's just a pet peeve of mine that I need to get over.

But how can you even come up with a game of the year list if you haven't played every single game that came out that year. Like if you haven't played every single game that came out in 2024 you shouldn't even have an opinion on anything ever.

I know your tongue is planted firmly in cheek, but "my ten favorite games of the year" and "the ten best games" are two different lists.

Haha. Note that I stated the games that were nominated for Game of the Year. I see what you mean though, but we need to draw the line somewhere. Most of the games that are nominated are the best reviewed games.

Pretty much.

I enjoy reading people's personal Top 10 lists, like Frisky's. Good succinct descriptions of what people liked about a certain game. That's helpful for me in finding recommendations on what I might want to play.

Professional journalists, on the other hand - I get a vibe that most journalists care more about what the reader thinks about them as a reviewer than about the game itself. Way too much nitpicking. A player will enjoy a game for its strengths and generally overlook its flaws (until they become distracting), whereas a reviewer will nitpick minor issues with this air of "look how refined my palette is, I noticed some of the textures in one of the levels are a little muddy compared to the others."

Granted, you see this among critics in every industry, not just games. I think it can taint a person's enjoyment of something. Instead of enjoying something for what it is, it primes your brain to be hyper-aware of any issue (objective or subjective) that the reviewer puts in your mind.

Reviewers are social media personalities now. Their top 10 games are just a curated list of some of the already agreed upon top games from forums, a few outliers that exemplify their own personal brand, and the rest pledge their allegiance to either the woke or based fan base they make their ad revenue from. I saw that Meta is going to start implementing AI social media personalities, this will be the formula for all their top 10 lists going forward. Either that or whoever pays Meta the most, or aligns with the agenda that will be most profitable and safe for their shareholders. An actual top 10 list for most normal people nowadays is ”here is my ranking of the 10 games I played this year.”

Eh. Professional game reviewers’ opinions have always been kind of ass, whether we’re talking about today, the 00s, or the 80s. The way they’re ass just changes with the times.

True that and many top ten like say RPGs will be consistent across many content creators and such, so it gets boring very quickly watching top ten RPGs of the year videos. It's pretty much just oh what will they put at number one Metaphor whatever or FF Remake we're still not done yet. I do think indie game top 10 lists of the year have better variety, or it's nice when they get into top tens of the year.

I could only give a top 10 list of games played this year. I don’t even know if any of the games I’ve played have been from this year. That would take some research.
This is true. The only games I played from 2024 so far are Dragonball Sparking Zero, Persona 3: Reload, Princess Peach, Blops 6, Paper Mario, and Mario Party Jambore. I would put Mario Party as my favorite rele of the year.

Everything else I played was stuff from the past few years. I did get Silent Hill 2, Metaphor, and Stellar Blade but haven’t played them yet since I just got my PS5 a month ago.

Anyone playing Metaphor Refantazio on PS5 suddenly having audio issues with it? Seems like there must have been an update that totally screwed up the audio mix.

Only way I can play it with a somewhat normal mix of music, effects and voices is to turn my receiver off.

All other games still sound fine.

I mean, it is likely that they all had their own individual lists of best games of the year and they the company sorta collated them all to come up with the list of best games for the year, that's how many sites and institutions handle awards season. If only half the games they personally listed ended up on the final list it's not their fault they didn't go and play the other half to see what's up, they already did their part in the awards process. "Unfortunately" many games are long as hell, with movies or music you can catch up with all the most notable ones over the course of a weekend; Metaphor: ReFantazio alone is 60-100 hours.

I don't have a "ten favorites" or "ten best" or anything like that. I spent most the damn year playing Balatro, Mario Wonder, and (replaying) Persona 5 or Persona 5 Royal.

So what I've got are "the ten games released in 2024 that I'll get to in 2025, with any luck."

In order of release:

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
LaD: Infinite Wealth
Persona 3 Reload
Unicorn Overlord
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Sonic x Shadow Generations
Mario & Luigi Brothership
Dragon Age Veilguard

Honorable mention: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (because I own the rest physically but this one is functionally digital-only, so, eh)

EDIT: Yeah, VoH is also digital, but it's an expansion

My game of the year list:
1. FF7 rebirth
2. Castlevania Symphony of the Night
3. Mario Sunshine
4. Pikmin 3
5. Castlevania Circle of the Moon
6. Castlevania 4
7. Megaman 8
8. Castlevania Rondo of Blood
9. Unicorn Overlord
10. Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together

Can only rank what I played. Most could probably go up or down a rank. FF7 rebirth, some things I still didn’t like, but overall my favorite game played. Surprisingly one of the only modern releases I actually played.

How was rebirth on the A/V side? I'm afraid to play it not owning a PS5 Pro yet. That, horizon, stellar blade... games I own and sidelining to play them 'properply', from what I read.

It still looked good, but I swapped between performance and graphics mode. If you know you are going to get a pro, I’d wait to play anything that would benefit.

2024 releases I played in 2024:

Batman Arkham Shadow

Arcade Paradise VR

Legendary Tales

Little Kitty Big City

Going solely off 2024 releases, Batman is easily GOTY.

For the few 2024 releases I played, this is how I'd rank them. Metaphor doesn't qualify because I'm just now starting it.
1. Unicorn Overlord
1. Astro Bot
3. Persona 3 Reload
4. Balatro
5. FFVII Rebirth
6. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy
7. Trails through Daybreak

Right now, my top game of December (or 2024) is Path of Exile 2 on PC. because that's the game I've been playing all month. It's like a better Diablo, and it's very addictive. I've got like 133 hours on it, with probably a good third of that idling.

The loot distribution, acquisition, and rare crafting is enticing. The sheer number of build options and talent trees are astounding. I like the game very much. At the same time it's a MMO-lite / shared-world MMO with a Chinese goldfarming / RMT problem. The game is fun when everything is undiscovered and new, but "content creators" and influencers ruin everything that is fresh. There is just too much overexposure with anything multiplayer-driven or networked these days. Dunno how much longer I will keep playing it, as it's really hard to break into the high-end in this poopsocker economy. But you can also easily pretend that none of it exists, and play the game entirely solo.
