Aerosmith Dream on...sung by Steven Tyler or Joe Perry?

Heres the deal...I made a bet a few days ago that it was Joe Perry who sings the song Dream on. Now I know Steven Tyler is the frontman, but I know that many bands have had another band member sing a song or two. So I tried doing some research and I am still stuck and even more confused. I would say about 70% of the forum comments I have read on the net say that it is Steven Tyler sings and the rest have stated things like how they have seen Perry sing it live and how they agree that its perry. Now normally, I wouldn't go into a bet unless I had something good to back me up, well heres what got me to bet. I remeber watching VH1 behind the music on Aerosmith and I could swear that somewhere during the show, they did a bit on how Joe Perry sings dream on. I only made this bet because of me remembering that show. Now heres another interesting thing, another person on some forum mentioned the same VH1 bit I saw and said it was Joe Perry. So after reading that comment I knew I wasn't losing my mind or misunderstood (but maybe I did). COuld this be just some huge misconception?

So can anyone clear this up...the majority of people think its Tyler and I guess I could be mistaken, but even the voice on dream on sounds extremely different compared to your average Aerosmith song. Could VH1 be wrong? I will probably end up buying the dvd so if anyone knows of a good deal, please reply.

I really, really CAN'T lose this bet!!!

Dream on, cagers.

Aerosmith is the worst band of all time. Tyler is the singer.
What'd you bet?
After all of you saying ST, I don't want to say... I still can't get it though, sure, ST has vids of him singing, but maybe Perry sung the original/first????

How can you explain why VH1 said?

How can you explain the difference in voice?

AND I CAN'T FIND THAT VH1 SHOW ON AEROSMITH ANYWHERE!!!!

Is it safe to say that Perry has sung dream on before...maybe like a one time thing and maybe thats what vh1 was talking about?
I actually have this song on a 45.

Shutup.
Shut up?

Anyway, the bet is for small amount of cash, but after the huge discussion I got in, I just have to win. I just want to save myself from looking like a complete idiot. I was sooo confident when I made the bet so just losing the bet will do enough damage.

Damn you VH1, DAMN YOU!

Not you. Anyone who decides it would be wise to mock the 45. ;)

it does sound different because he's actually singing instead of screaming. :)
if you listen closely, you can hear little inflections that reveal that it's his voice.

plus, in the video, which is a live performance w/ an orchestra iirc (digging back to early 90s MTV here), steven tyler sings it.

The VH1 show probably said something about how people thought it wasn't steven tyler, since it does sound so different.

The original is over 30 years old - I doubt your voice will sound the same 30 years from now either. ;)

Anyway, I have this song on a mix cd I play in the car quite a bit - it's one of the only Aerosmith songs I like. It's definitely Tyler singing.

That's actually awesome. I'd love to have that on a 45.

Look at James Hetfield now and then. He could never sing a track from Kill 'Em All nowadays and have it sound like it did when he was 19. Voices change and vocal styles change.

If anything, maybe Perry sings the low vocals NOW, rather than on the original track from what, 30ish years ago? Perhaps that's what VH1 was referring to.

I hope you aren't joking........because you're right.

LOL!!!!
Anyone who thinks ST didn't sing the song is high on more crack rocks than would fill the Vatican.

Aerosmith was the first band I ever saw.....1988 with Dokken. That's right, I'm old.
Shaq yer momma.

It was Steven Tyler who sang it. That was his singing voice before he ruined it perminently by screaming improperly (clinching his throat instead of just letting a natural scream happen). He recently had to have some sort of surgery I think 2 months rest on his vocal chords because they were so irritated and damaged from screaming like that.

But yeah, it's definately Steven Tyler, I saw an ooold clip of when they first released that song and he sang it live exactly like on the original recording.
It was one of the few songs sung by Perry, original recording was Perry. Sorry to burst your bubble there bud.
See, this is what I mean...whats your source? Did you watch vh1? Where was your reply eariler man...I already accepted my loss.

Here is some info on that song "Dream On"
http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?id=726

There is no mention of Joe Perry singing it. Also, it mentions that Joe Perry hated the song early on.

There is one thing I would like to add: There was a time in the late 70's that Joe Perry left Aerosmith to form his own band "The Joe Perry Project". He may have song that song while on tour with that band - Thats only speculation on my part though.

------------------

By the way, all you Aerosmith haters out there....you should listen to "Toys in the Attic" and "Rocks". Those are the two best albums they made and it a hell of a lot better than the commercial shit they are putting out now a days....

OK. My God. If you think it was sung by Perry, I suppose you think Tom Morello sang "Killing in the Name". Lock thread now.

I want the guy who believes perry sang it to post his source first...I might still be alive here....come on man.

Well, I looked a little more this morning (I was bored :p). No site I see specifically says who sung it - which I think that alone is proof. Since it would be unusual for Perry to have sung it you would think they would mention that. But I did find a blurb here:

http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1296

Specifically, the part you're looking for is this:

Eminem used this as the basis for his 2002 song "Sing For The Moment." Tyler's vocals were sampled and Perry played guitar on Eminem's track.

But on that exact site...

"I don't think Tyler sings this one. Perry does. I heard that on VH1 behind the music. Anyone else see that episode?!"

Oh well, I already accepted my lose, but still would like some solid proof.

Ok, we get it; you're sick and tired of these damn kids with their electric guitars and hoola-hoops. Just try not to be such a cranky old geezer all the time.

Sorry man, you lost the bet.
"Putting down his vocals, Tyler suffered a crisis of confidence and resorted to an unnatural, strangled pitch in order to sound “a little bit black.” “I used this voice for all of that stuff except ‘Dream On,’ ” he says. “ ‘Dream On’ is the real me.” Tyler added flute and strings using a Mellotron — while sky-high on crystal THC — and “Dream On” was complete."
From Blender magazine, so a fairly reputable source, in my opinion

Wait, if I was a geezer wouldn't I like Aerosmith? They've been around like 35 years or something (longer than I have). Aerosmith is just terrible IMO and I can't think of another band that successful in a genre I love (rock) where I really don't think ANY of their stuff is original or inspiring - it's all a giant bore to me.
