Yeah, I know...asking whether or not you hear insults on LIVE is like asking if anyone has ever seen a blue sky, but still...

This past week, I'd say a full 25% of my games have had people throwing out racial insults. I'm not even overly sensitive to that sort of thing, but in volume it still annoys me.

Oddly, I don't hear anything like this on Rainbow 6, Crimson Skies, etc. Maybe it can be chocked up to Halo 2's more mainstream appeal (gets all of the lowest common denominator types there). I dunno. But I've gotten to the point where I just don't even play with the headset on Slayer anymore.

well you also have to factor in the fact that halo 2 probably sold like at least 50x better than the other games. so you have more people in general.

..which is what he said in his first post.

Yea I think its pretty funny when people do it. Yep it has increased as of lately too. If you do hear it just leave them feedback and Bungie will take care of it.

Ah.. it's been like this since like 2 years ago, when I 1st went.. on.. just ignore them... I could careless... then just leave neg feedback if it makes you feel any better...

Yeah there are a lot of idiots on live. They know if they insulted a black guy in real life they would get the assbeating of a lifetime. However on live they recieve nothing from spitting out whatever the want. My best friend is black and we play on XBL together and we get this shit all the time. Usually after completely dominating the other team. My friend simply tells em "Well you just got beat by a N*****". Idiots.....oh welll.

Just report them. Chances are they're yelling while saying it, and repeating it many times, so you can report them for multiple things.

WARNING

Game experience may change during online play.

Unfortunately, this is the blanket statement that allows this type of thing to happen. Thankfully, MS takes it a little more seriously than most other companies and allows the feedback option for this kind of behavior.

[quote name='seanw']This is a pretty good article on this topic:

Yeah, I was gonna recommend that. It's a really good read.

But yeah, this is why I don't play on Live. Yeah I know, you can play with your friends and what not. But stuff like this would discourage me from playing against random people, which you would think would be really fun. It's not worth the subscription fee to listen to a bunch of 11 year olds who've just learned curse words and racial slurs.

Fun.

It is when you're lightyears better than them, and absolutely end their little world. :D

He means funny in how sad these kids are. Pimp is very far from a racist.

I play with pimp almost everyday in Halo 2, and I've never once heard him say anything more than a few harmless taunts here and there. Pimp's a stand-up guy.

One time I was playing Halo 2 on Live and one of the kids claimed that he was a white supremacist. This kid sounded like he was 8 and had a southern accent. Throughout the entire game it was n___ ain't this, n___ ain't that. Thing about it the other players were siding with him. So I just left and gave him a bad feedback, as well as the others. Only if I had a communicator at that time...

Gotcha. I wasn't certain how to take it.

I find that most people seem to use racial slurs against black people and Jews. I'm Jewish myself so it can get annoying.

I'm black, I just ignore it for the most part. In real life, I get more offended when other black people use the n-word because it screams stupidty and ignorance. That being said, I usually mute everyone. I play deathmatch more than anything and I don't need to hear anyone.

Yeah, I hear 'em every-so-often. I don't really care anymore, I find it funny that people get so pissed and start cussing/etc. when they can't do anything about it. My friend's always said a few things like the N-word on Live here and there, but now he's really saying it a lot. Which has lead to be bitching at him about it in the middle of games sometimes...

if you've ever played with me you may have heard a slur or two, but that's usually because i'm intoxicated. i don't mean to slur my words.

I actually hear FA**OT a hell of a lot more than NI**ER on XBL. Like either is an insult anymore when members of each minority call each other those slang terms on a regular basis.

What do you expect though, when you're beating someone bad they have to say SOMETHING.

Leave it up to you to make a foolish statement that fails to realize the impact that the cultural hegemony of white heterosexual males has had in our society; rather than looking at language use within minority cultures, you've oversimplified the problem (and additionally made the false conclusion that in-group use of the "f" and "n" words has somehow made it permissible for others to use them, despite the fact that they never really went out of style).

However, since no one has brough up the "f" bomb tonight, you should be recognized, at the very least, for that.

myke.

Ah yes, let's blame the cultural hegemony of white, heterosexual males for blacks calling each other "ni**ers" and gays calling each other "fa**ots".

Nice try in your attempt to deflect blame from those groups desensitizing everyone else to those words and blaming whitey. Your diversification training has brainwashed you well.

Yes, there are a lot of immature, stupid people online in general. And yes, using this kind of language looks bad on them, it only makes them look stupid.

But at some point, you have to grow a thicker skin and deal with it. You can't let an 8 year old get you upset with a few words. In fact, no one should be able to upset you with a couple of words. You have the option of muting any player you want. You have the option of leaving feedback. If someone is bothering you, mute them, and move on. By getting upset and angry, you give them more attention and time than they deserve.

There comes a point where you have to decide that you are mature enough to not allow yourself to be upset by words. The people saying them are not worth getting upset over. If someone needs to hide behind the safety and anonymity of the internet in order to insult you, what kind of person are they? Not someone that you should ever be concerned about. Use your mute function, its not like you're going to miss anything you want to hear.

since when have gays been classified as a minority. i think thats pretty disrespectful to any people of color. if i were black, and you lumped me in with some gays, i'd be pretty pissed.

Umm...yeah I'm pretty sure it's still very much an insult for someone who is not a member of the minority in question to call a member of the respective minority a "f*g" or "n****r" . Again. You're making the fundamental error of thinking that most people weren't using this kind of language before "they" used it in reference to each "other." Yes, let's blame the cultural hegemony of white, heterosexual males; where did these terms come from, then? (Not a strict etymology (sp?), per se, but their history as a diminuitive term).

So, tell me then, when did white heterosexuals stop using these epithets, and where is the proof of your causation that their re-appropriation into minority groups has led to a re-acceptance of general use? Until you show proof, I consider your causal arguments to be nothing more than a convenience to support your ideological perspective.

...I'm glad I've kept the XBL mic off since my first game, when I played against someone for whom sitting on the couch playing NFL Fever was a demanding physical chore; after listening to his heavy breathing for 30 minutes, I'd abandoned this technological wonder for good. Looks like I've got the right idea.

You could have easily muted them... Do you guys not know how to mute people?

I never use racial slurs when i am on Live. I may use words like "Dumb ass" or "Douche bag" but those words are international insults that can be on any person regardless of creed, sexual orientation, ethnic background, etc.

All of these blatant "I'm smarter than you" type posts is really uncalled for. The only thing that matters is who on Xbox Live is using the language and what you do about it, not who started it, the cultural ramifications, or right vs. left arguments. Do like dafoomie and I do. Hit mute.

don't be such a baby! How old are you that you care that some one calles you (insert racial slur here)? The most important thing on XBX Live is to have fun, find a group of people that don't use racial slurs, play a diffrent game, dont play at times when kids are off of school. There are worse things about Halo 2 then some kid calling me a "wetback"

I have to...dammit...it's "posts are really uncalled for.

I think it is necessary, you don't. I don't see how it's any different from the differences in reaction methods you listed. Some people mute, some people report the incidents to MS; I would imagine that those in the latter category see those in the former category as perpetuating the problem by not indicating to the players using the slurs that they are saying entirely inappropriate things.

At any rate, I would argue that it's important to bring up when people make damnfool statements such as "oh, since they call each other that, it's not as much of an insult." The fact that it is recognized as a major insult is the very reason this topic was brought up in the first place.

myke.

I still find it amazing that some of the clowns on LIVE even have the intelligence to get online.

To be honest, most of my LIVE experiences have not warranted me muting people. I have had good experiences with Capcom vs. SNK 2, Crimson Skies and Outlaw Volleyball. Halo 2 is the only one where I have had to mute on a consistent basis. I just wish they had that feature in Quake 3 and Elite Force back in the day...

It takes alot of feedback (or so it seems) to get people temp banned or suspended from XBox live. That being said Halo 2 is one of those games where you probably won't encounter the same person more then once a a week you constantly play Rumble Training or Team Training, where I managed to meet the same person four times in a row. Also if your easily offended you should just mute everyone. And remember you can't do anything about it outside of reporting people because theres a little warning everytime a live game starts: ESRB warning: Game experience may change during online play (or something to that extent) so Bungie (and everyother company) can cover their asses.
