I am a big fan of Mega Man X for the SNES. What is the best mega Man game on the DS/GBA? I know there are multiple games, but I really can't keep up with the quality of these games.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

I'm currently playing Advent, completed the first ZX last year. I'd definitely recommend Advent and skipping ZX entirely if you don't care about the (lackluster) story. Advent even has the same powers from ZX so you won't be missing much.

The other Mega Man titles aren't platformers. There is the one Battle Network title and the new series which are more action RPGs.

For the GBA, you can't go wrong with any of the Megaman Zero games. Megaman and Bass is another good one if you want the old-school pre-X style of Megaman gameplay. As for the Megaman Battle Network series of Action-RPGs, your best bets would be with BN2 or BN3.

BN1 has a generic storyline of "Oh noez! Dr. Wily is trying to take over the Earth/Net! Megaman.EXE must stop him!" and the games after BN3 had some pointless gimmicks. BN2 had a much improved storyline over BN1, and it was the last one before Capcom decided to do the Pokemon-style "Two versions, same game" thing. BN3 has two versions, but either of them are good, as BN3 also has a good storyline. Plus, as I stated before, it was after BN3 that Capcom started to add some pointless gimmicks (Dark souls in BN4, some strategy segments, etc.) that had a tendency to harm the game more than they helped.

Battle Network has a "played one, played all" feel to it, but really its like any other Mega Man game. I've played the first and third ones. If you want to give them a shot anyone of them will do fine.

Same with the Zero titles, any of them are great. A bit of a warning though that a lot of people find that series extremely hard. It might just be the third and fourth games that were really hard but IIRC a lot of people were bitching about the difficulty. As Cao Cao mentioned theres Megaman and Bass, the most traditional of all the portable titles.

Battle Network: Yeah, they all have a "played one, you played them all" feeling. But really, 2 or 3 would be the best routes to go as they had the stronger storylines in the series, without adding some half-baked gimmicks.
Zero: It's definitely a series of tough games. I remember some time back that there was this thread with a big debate over how the difficulty evolved for the series. There were three significant sides:
- The new features added made each sequel significantly easier than its predecessor. I think this was a position taken primarily by veterans of the series who played through each game as they came out.
- The punishing enemies and level designs more than compensated for any new features, making the series even tougher.
- The factors above complement eachother to balance the difficulty out in each installment, making them all nearly equally tough.
But I just can't find the topic that had this debate. During my search for it, I did find a few more topics related to Megaman:

You know, I thought Zero 1 was a reasonable difficulty - it kicked my ass but I was still able to finish it.

Zero 2, on the other hand, was next to impossible for me, despite having played a ton of Mega Man games and trying for a long time to beat it. I stopped after that because I hated skipping it and going straight to #3, even though I own all 4 (bought them all used around the same time, because they were really cheap).

I enjoyed ZX for quite awhile, but I reached a level I kept dying on (a good ways in where you're being chased by lava) and lost interest.

Absolutely, all you need is one installment. I played the 3rd one first, and only got the 1st one because it was 4 bucks at game crazy. Sorry Cao Cao, but the story was very forgettable for both. MMBN 3 is great for the good boss design and a collection of battle chips that made the most of the battle system. It should be pretty easy find as well.

Not to rain on the parade, but I couldn't really get into Advent - it's fun, but you have to have a certain tolerance for confusion that I couldn't muster. The map is awful and you're often left wandering around with no idea where you're headed.

Megaman Battle Network 3 Blue/White is a very, very good game. I played it back in 6th grade, have no idea why. But it's a great game.

Same here, I played it during 6th/7th grade I really liked it, I still play it sometimes, its pretty fun but it's frustrating when you want to go somewhere and you keep running into viruses
