Can I hook up my SNES to a new TV?

CAGiversary!
I am going to buy a new TV in the near future and would like to know if the televisions sold today still have the jacks to plug in a AV cable. I have a Nintendo NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis along with the more current generations of gaming. Will I be able to play these old systems on a new Samsung 1080P digital LCD HDTV?

Yes, every TV will still have both an analog jack for an old RF converter, or the Y/R/W plugs. So you will be able to play them.

How an old system will look however, is a different story.

'How an old system will look however, is a different story '

What does that mean? Won't it look the same as it did back when it came out? I don't expect it to look HD, but I would expect it to look the same as it did before the days of HDTV. Am I wrong?

HDTVs are capable and intended for a much sharper image or higher resolution. You will see every "imperfection" in the sprites.

In simpler terms, a line that looked like this -------- may look like this - - - - - on your HDTV. Not unplayable, but it would look better on an older tv unfortunately. :(

Its just going to look a little blurry. Your 1080p TV is 1080 pixels wide. Those old systems weren't meant to be played on anything higher rez than an 480i set. So basically, you're TV is going to try and spread those 480 pixels over 1080 pixels creating a bluring effect.

For an idea of what it looks like, if your PC has an LCD monitor, set your resolution to 800x600. You'll see what I mean. Some people keep an old CRT set around JUST to play their classic systems.

Imagine taking a microscope to a human and seeing every single skin cell. That's how I feel sometimes when I play old-school games on my HDTV.

I'm one of those people. I have 27" CRT just for my older systems. Unless it's a 480p game, even last gen games can look bad. I am planning on getting a cheap used CRT HDTV to play last gen games via component. I heard they look pretty nice that way.

You're going to get upscaling input lag. Read the HDTV Lag FAQ in my sig. Some people are very sensitive to it, to the point of making games that require precision timing (fighting, racing, shmup) unplayable.

Its also going to look horrible.

My last lcd just would not work with my SNES, it worked on every other TV in the house but would not display anything on my LG through composite.

should work fine. I run my snes into my lcd hdtv through the antenna hookup. The nintendo AV cables for the snes, gc, and n64 should work as well.

I've run everything from my Coleco Telestar Pong machine to my X360 through my Sony LCD with no issues or lag.
