I know this may be a completely pointless topic considering MP3 mania is on full throttle, but I was wondering if anybody was able (or is going) to pick up Carnival Games. I know it's another one of those "mini game"collections, but a lot of the previews I've read have commented on how surprisingly deep the game is. I guess the main reason I'm excited about it is that it seems to be another good example of really utilizing the wii remote properly. Thoughts?

It comes out the same week as Metroid? That is terrible.

I am interested in it, but only as a clearance item in the future. I hope it has Skee-ball.

It does. It also has a shooting gallery, mini-golf, ring toss, dunk tank, and test of strength to name a few. This may be blasphemous, but I never got into Metroid, so I'm abstaining from the MP3 hoopla.

They were at least smart by deciding to give Carnival Games an MSRP of $39.99. It's going to be rough with it coming out the same week as MP3, but Tiger Woods 08 actually comes out this week too. It's actually a decent Wii release week if people would look beyond Metroid.

Aye, putting it out this week was essentially a death blow. I'll wait on reviews and a further price cut before I consider it.

To many damn collection of mini games. If they reviews are good I might considered it at $20. The whole unique controls stance on the Wii has worn itself out we need some damn games worth a damn.

Metroid Prime isn't my thing either. Not into Zelda or Mario to boot. Now that's blasphemy. No wonder I haven't bought any Wii games before this.

Right now, the cheapest price for Carnival Games is $33.99 at DeepDiscount. Sounded reasonable to me, so I ordered it. Who doesn't love Skee Ball?

And with Pricegrabber's $5.00 review up for grabs to knock off a few more bucks. it's worth not having to wait for an unkown future price drop.

I know looking forward to some non-gory, mellow amusement.

This seems like it should have been a budget title ($20). I'll wait for a price drop or just rent it more likely.

Edit: This game looks a little more fun to me now and I would definately buy it if it ever is on sale for $30.
This seems like it should have been a budget title ($20). I'll wait for a price drop or just rent it more likely.
I know many people are echoing this sentiment, but I'd like to remind you guys that this is the Wii...not the DS. There are no "$20 budget titles". The only games that have dropped to $20 are ones that suck REALLY bad.

Nintendo Power gave Carnival Games a 7.0 rating, which is pretty decent. I honestly think it's going to come down to what interests you. While I agree that tacking on "intuitive" controls just for the sake of putting a game on the Wii is stupid, I think games such as Trauma Center (and even Cooking Mama to a lesser extent) make the system golden.

It's easy to just make another Metroid, Mario, Madden, or Zelda, throw some waggle controls on it and make it a blockbuster. But I have to respect a game that goes outside the realm of what we're used to...and pulls it off! To me, that's what the Wii is all about. Suffice to say, I'm also anxiously awaiting Hooked this fall. I'd also be all over The Bigs, Brunswick Bowling and Tiger Woods 08...if they could ever top the gameplay of Wii Sports. Oh well, maybe Rockstar Table Tennis will be up to the challenge.

given that NP usually gives high scores for the games, i'd say 7.0 will be average at best.

I think us gamers are ready for more games that actually push the wii to it's limits as far as graphics.
given that NP usually gives high scores for the games, i'd say 7.0 will be average at best.

Seriously? That's your response? NP usually gives high scores for "the games"? What games? How old are you?

1. NP gave Boogie a 5.5 (granted, from everything I've read, it's a terrible game). That by no means is a good score. Yes, I know it's "Nintendo's Mag", but I find them to be far less homerish than people might think.

2. If you bought the Wii for graphics, you're a moron. There's just no other way to say that. I'm sorry. When I want to be "blown away" graphically, I play my 360 or PS3. When I play the Wii, I want something different and exciting.

Definitely passing on this, I'm in full on mini-game collection/party game boycott mode right now.

Developers need to start making some real, full fledged games for the Wii, not just trying to slop together something to make a quick buck off the motion control gimmick with a bunch of shallow minigames.

Mercury Meltdown Revolution is launching at $20, and it has an 80 average on Metacritic (with several reviews since it has been out in Europe for a while). That makes it the 7th highest reviewed game out of 79 total.

I saw Carnival Games at TRU today and was totally surprised it was out already. By the way, the ONLY review for it on Metacritic is NP's 70.

It sounds like something I'd buy on clearance or possibly for $20 with trade-in credit (note that I have 3 kids who might like it - it was actually my 4 year-old who spotted the game box at TRU and asked me what it was). There's something to be said for publishers releasing games like this at $20. I'd probably buy it right now at Gamecrazy (where I have credit to burn) if it was $20. Otherwise, no way. Games like this need to come out cheap and make up for it in volume.

I have a really bad feeling this game is going to be unfairly overlooked. It doesn't seem like a completely trite mini-game compilation but it's being damned regardlses.

A number of impressions I've read on the game have been quite favorable. These are user impressions from Gamefaqs:

Picked it up about an hour ago. Been playing since.

The beginning customization is very basic, but once you progress further in the game, the tickets/unlockables tread on the "how silly can I make my character look".

Most of the minigames are a blast, and if you enjoy ski-ball, this game is an insta-purchase.

The duckshooting is great too, though you're limited to 25 shots.

Some of the aiming is a bit different, as follows:

For the dunk tank, the aiming is on a track, when you "throw" the wiimote forward, the ball is released and will land whereever the cursor was at the time you released.

For duck shoot, you have total control of where you are aiming, and when you pull the trigger.

PLENTY of games to choose from. I played for over an hour and didn't even take in them all. You start with around 20 or so, then unlock more as you become more skillful in certain games (ie, by obtaining a perfect score in ally ball - ski-ball - twice, you will unlock super ally ball).

Seriously, if you own a Wii, this is a must purchase. Well worth the $40, especially compared to WarioWare and Big Brain.

Sorry this isnt' more of a review, I just wanted to let you all know it's well worth the purchase.
I picked up Carnival Games for the Wii today at Gamestop. They were nice enough to get it out of the back (I had it on reserve) and add it to the system (again, kudos to this branch's customer service!) for me to check it out.

Now onto impressions...

The graphics do run in 480p and 16x9. They are fairly simplistic, but have their own charming style. Mii integration would have been nice, but the character creation (at the front) allows one to create a somewhat reasonable facsimile of themselves. There are quite a wide array of mini-games. In general, there are no broken mini-games ala Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. The cursor is stable, and although--of course--no games are 1:1, they control fluidly and respond pretty much instantly to the user's actions. Load times are pretty much nonexistant and I'm impressed at how quickly you can launch back into another try if you want to play again.

Alley Ball is one of my favorites thus far. It's pretty simple--aim (left and right and spin) then flick the remote up. Being the Wii Sports Bowling alum that I am, I wanted to rear back and then let it go. :p If you miss, a funny guy will start taunting you: "I think you're a cool cat, but maybe this just ain't your game!"

Dunk the Punk is another great. Gotta love the cheerful Carnival guy inviting one to "dunk our punk." Each time you hit it (a timed throw-like motion), it gets smaller. The punk will also taunt you, naturally, being the punk he is. :p

There are also several shooting games (Shooting Gallery where you shoot classic arcade ducks is a favorite) as well as others such as Hoops (toss a basketball, the one mini-game I can say has a bit odd controls, but can be able to get used to), Ring Toss (challenge, but fun) and so on.

Each time you score, you unlock things to customize your character or collectible prizes. There are also mini-games which can be redeemed with tickets (main games like Alley Ball do not need tickets) like The Claw and one where you are under a Plinko-like field, moving a squirrel catching nuts as they fall.

The music is there simply for background, and is neither intolerable nor remarkable.

I haven't had a chance to try multiplayer yet.

Overall, a good mini-game collection. There's little "depth" here (no deep plot), but there is replay value from fun games, unlockable "super" games, prizes, etc. I feel it's worth the $39 USD if you liked Wii Sports, Wii Play, etc. Sure, if you are one of those "Wii has NOTHR Mini-GAmezzz. It esss dooooomeed!!" people, it won't be for you, but for some enjoyable lighthearted fun with unique Wii controls, I'd say it's worth a shot!

If you have any specific questions, I'll try to answer them when I have the time.
If your looking for a game that will take you back to the days of spending your dollars on tough to beat carnival games this is for you.

The game has a ton of old favorites:

Frog bog
shoot the star
bowler roller
dime toss
milk cans
skeeball
football pass
ring the bell
dart toss.

I liked the game although the controls can be a bit quirky. I really didnt see the need for the love o meter and fortune teller however.

This is a great game to play if you got 10-15 mins to kill. Its def worth the 40.00 bux and is fun.

Thank you! This is the kind of information I've been waiting for. I also had a feeling that there would be more to this game than just being "another mini-game collection" Most of the previews I had read talked about how deep the game was with all the character customization options, prizes, etc. I'm holding out for the next couple days to see if I can find a used copy locally (people around here have been known to trade games in almost immediately) and stack the 10% email coupon with my Edge card.

No problem man.

Yeah, I think, unlike 80% of CAG I'm not going to dismiss this game entirely (oh noes, more mini-game collections!) but $40 is just too damn much. But I'll definitely add this to the "$20 or under list" along with Kororpina ;).

It's already $30 "Keep it" on Gamefly. Seeing as it just came out, you'd pretty much be getting a brand new copy.

What can I say. I hate the genre. I've never been into pick up and play games. I like long involved games, preferably story driven.

Even now that I have little time, I'd still rather just play a real game once or twice a week for a 2-3 hours rather than short little bursts here and there of these mini game things.

About the only exception is Guitar Hero, and even that I tend to play for at least an hour or two everytime.

See, now Guitar Hero has no appeal to me. It just seems frustrating and pointless ;). And no, I have never even played it (but I've watched people in store). But I hate the "hit buttons when they scroll by" type games with a passion, no matter how well they are dressed up. In minigame collections like Mario Party and the like they are the ones I usually try to avoid.

Cyb3-rr, I appreciate the input but I don't use Gamefly. Also, when I say "$20 or below" I mean in store credit at Gamecrazy or EB where the credit only cost me 1/3 - 1/2 of the actual value (yes, including the original cost of my trade-ins). So really I mean $10 or under ;).

:D

Lots of friends, most just aren't into games. And the ones that are pretty much only like to play FPS games. Though I did get one of them into guitar hero.

I've never been big on multiplayer gaming anyway. Prefer to game alone and do more out and about social things with friends.

And if you play a real guitar, guitar hero is kind of hard to get used to, it really is off time a lot.

I can see that. I generally didnt' care for them much either, but Donkey Konga got me into them a little bit and I got pretty hooked on Guitar Hero 1 and 2 for a while....but not to the extreme of the real fans. I never got passed the first 2 or 3 songs on Hard mode, much less expert.

So... about Carnival Games... watched that clip posted above (thanks) along with some others and I'm really hoping the sound effects aren't that cartoony, muffled and soft. I know this isn't a realistic carnival sim, but still.

Pinball Hall of Fame did a great job with recreating background sounds to give a sense of a real arcade atmosphere.

Think the clacking of the wooden skeeballs as they first roll down the chute after you drop in the coins. Unique. Didn't hear it in the vids. Hope it's there. And there certainly aren't bloops when a ball scores at the amusement park.

Full judgment reserved until I get the game in hand to play. Still looking forward to it.

Agreed that they would sell boat loads more if the price were lower. The magic number in this case is $29.99.

So still no one here has bought it and can comment on it? The inclusion of skee-ball makes me want to buy the game just for that, but the video didn't really excite me.

Im going to buy it tomorrow. As much as people here seem to hate the mini-game collections, I can't help but really enjoy them. I got about 10 hours into Zelda and could do no more. I don't really have the time, but I also lost interest pretty quickly.

Considering that I find Rayman Raving Rabbids (besides Wii sports) to be the best Wii game I have played yet, Im pretty sure I will really enjoy this one.

I'll post my impressions tomorrow.

One of my friends bought the title and is really enjoying it with his kids.

I have a hard time with the 50 price point, but when it gets to 20, it'll be fun to play with my girls.

Wow this game feels like it could have been a Nintendo 1st party game (minus Mario). This game is great fun, with a lot of thought put into the astetics (i.e. white-trash people at a carnival, lame prizes traded in for well...bigger lame prizes). This is a great multi-player game - oddly more in the same vain as Wii Sports than Mario Party, since MP8 is a pain to list to all the dialog, wait in CPUs, and lame animations.

It has the same "anyone can pick up and play" feel as Wii Sports did. With a lot of extras and unlockables. For the price, it's a real sleeper hit!
More reviews.

Lucky Pass
Super Nerves of Steel?- I assume this is one as well. I hate nerves of steel, but Ive beaten all the others so there must be a super version of this one. god help us.

Super Day at the Races- Kinda the sam concept as Super alley Ball with the rotating blocks moving on the ramp. Fastest time is what your going for here.

First off id like to say that im a 28 year old guy. So this isnt impressions of a lil kid or anything.I got this game today and I must say im impressed. The graphics are alright for the type of game it is, kinda reminds me of theme park that I used to have on my ps2.

Anyways this game is very very very VERY fun. It is tons better than Wii Sports and Wii Play combined in my opinion. The games are very accurate and take skill just like they would at a real fair. There is very good use of the Wii remote and a bunch of different gestures. If you like playing the games at the fair you will love this game, better yet you dont have to spend five dollars a pop to do it. Im almost certain this game will also help you hone your skills at the real life games. The amount of force you throw stuff or move the wii remote is picked up very nicely in the game.

I have every game out for Wii right now, and even tho I have been playing Metroid alot for the past 3 or 4 days this game will be tough to take out of the Wii, it is that good and that fun. I cant really comment on the Multiplayer as I havent played with anyone, but it is worth it just for the single player if you ask me. This game in my opinion is better than warioware, mario party, super monkey ball and all of the lil mini game fests that have inhabited the wii thus far.

So in short if you are wondering whether this would be a good game to get then the answer is a strong yes. I strongly recommend it. You will not be disapointed. This is a game that all can play, not just for kids, but would be great for adults as well.

You do realize its $39.99 correct?

Just thought I'd add that I finally picked the game up tonight. My fiance and I played for 3 hours and had a blast. This game definitely falls into the vein of Wii Sports, but considering that's still one of the best games on Wii, this isn't a bad thing.

I think it does a great job replicating the feel of a Carnival, and the sound effects and ambiance is outstanding! Whoever was concerned about them not having typical sounds (wooden skee ball clacking, etc.) will be happily surprised. Some of the games really get on my nerves...but that's pretty much how they are in real life as well.

You'll find yourself cursing your ball/ring for bouncing off your intended target, or pulling your hair out over "Nerves of Steel" (this game really is just impossible and cruel). Even the Test of Strength will give you a workout before you slam that mallet down. Overall, I think this game will be great to play with friends, and anytime you just need a good laugh. It's not Resident Evil or Zelda, but you just have to remember, it's not trying to be.

Alright.... I just picked this up because my wife and children wanted it. Guess what? It isn't bad at all, infact they played it for about 2 hours and I played this morning for about an hour. And that was just playing single player mode, collecting tickets and buying crazy outfits. After I played we also played some multiplayer and it was very enjoyable. If you have kids, or a family this game is quite fun and worth the $40 price tag, I do see this having more replayability than Wario Ware because of the Carnival theme and collecting tickets and prizes.

No problem I had seen it at $29.99 I thought, and that was an instapurchase price...

This 39.99 is more of a "slowly agreeing to pick it up" price. I didn't know if that $10 would sway you at all.

YES! :bouncy: Now I eagerly await for DD to ship Carnival Games out.

Good to know you enjoyed the game or this whole thread would have ventured into irony or sumsuch.

It seems word of mouth is slowly creeping out that Carnival Games is better than expected.

You could easily blow 40$ at the arcade on ticket games and come home with a few pieces of junk for prizes, buy this instead and have a whole lot of fun! No I didn't buy the game, but it does sound pretty good.

I got it today and I'll say that this game is really well done, but I can't help but think they completely blew it with the $39.99 price tag.

If this had been $24.99 or $29.99 this would have flown off the shelves. As it is, I feel like I paid a bit to much for it. Hell, even waiting a week and finding a used one for $34 would be a pretty good price point for it. The only reason I don't feel that $34.99 or $39.99 is a rip though is because I know my 2 kids will get a lot of fun out of it.

All in all, it is a well done game that is definitely fun, though as others have posted these companies need to start realizing the correct price points to ensure a good amount of sales.

We got two in at work, one of which was preordered. The woman came to pick it up immediately. I checked the back of the box and it looked like a LOT of fun. This is the first time i've heard of it. I bought it. I don't feel like I wasted $40.

The timing is perfect, though. I wanted to go to the fair the other day with my girl but it was over an hour away.. so I brought the carnival games to her :p

seriously though, it's definately worth picking up. the guy talking about ambiance and sound effects is dead on.

it's kinda weird that no one has arms (think of Rayman). I can get over that. Easily. This is a very, very fun multiplayer game and one any family should strongly consider picking up. The developers did a great job with it.

Cult hit?
Cult hit?
I believe so, yes. It's as fun as, if not more fun than Wii sports.

I think it'll be fairly hard to find later on as well. Unless it gains in popularity. One of those games that'll be great, but no one notices. Like Beyond Good & Evil.

1) How many 10 scores have games gotten on NP? More than I care to count. You really expect NP to not be biased towards nintendo games?

2) Where did I say that I bought the wii for graphics? However, one can still appreciate good graphics. I'm of the opinion that not many games are even close to showing what the Wii can do in terms of graphics (MP3 proves that).

I really hope you can act your age in further posts.

I really hope you can act your age in further posts.
I am not trying to get in the middle of all this. But what games does NP review that are not Nintendo games? Wasn't the carnival game put out by Take Two?
