My brother is asking me about the trainers offered at cheathappens.com and I don't know anything about them. He's a console gamer for the most part, but he's been jumping on these Steam deals and wants to just run through some stuff as easily as possible.

Putting aside your opinions on cheating (and beyond that, paying for a cheat app), what are your thoughts? Are they decent programs? Any issues he should be aware of?

They probably contain spyware, malware, rootkits, key loggers, etc... Tell your brother to just play the games like everyone else, unless he wants his PC bogged down with crap.

I since it's a pay site its unlikely that they contains all that crap seh is talking about(but no guarantee). I doubt anyone on this site uses this site since we are cheap and we wouldn't pay for anything that is legally free.
He could get varible editor such as ram cheat(free i think) which will work on almost any game.
If he really wants trainers he should be able to find some free ones to try out(probably the same ones that site charges for), just download from a reputable site otherwise you will end up those problems SEH was talking about.
The cheats are usually the same things they had on game genie, invincibility, infinite stuff, edit stats ect..

Most games have a way to enable cheats normally. Especially, on the PC. Unlike Console you can use those console cheats or mad editor commands to skip levels and what not.

Trainers are more for RPG or games where stats enable content.

Once you use a trainer you will be limited to offline play only though as most online services have 'Punkbuster' or some measure to prevent 'cheats' from going online.

He has to start thinking outside of the "Press X" mentality of console gaming.

Just because its a pay site doesn't change the fact that most of the people who run/operate those kinds of sites are shady as hell. I could go download a ton of trainers, attach whatever I wanted with them, and then sell them too. Does that make me legit?

It's run by CraveOnline, which is why I didn't think much of the crapware aspect. It's a risk though.

D'oh. Logic failed me.

I thought a trainer sat in memory while the game is running to do it's thing. There's another method of RAM editing? Manual app or something?

Yeah. He knows. Thankfully he's not the type of dick that would do that online.

Hehe. Like I said, he just wants to blow through a growing backlog to experience the game. Can't blame him. Playing a RPG in half the time and having the same story experience is tempting to a degree.

If he just wants the story aspect...he can go to Youtube and just watch the collected storylines of any game out.

I do that for a lot of RPGs I missed out on from the NES and Sega Master System days that many people reference.

Agreed. If all he's looking to do is get the feel of the gameplay, he can play the game for an hour or so and get whatever he needs out of that. Then if he's looking for the story, just youtube all that. Much easier, you don't even have to play the game!

Lol I never said it was legit, but if there goal is to make money then they are going to want to sell quality trainers or at least not intentionally drive away customers, if there goal is to infect as many people as possible(for whatever reason) then they would probably give away the trainers for free. And as I said there is no guarantee that they are clean, even if they are not shady they probably are cheap a lazy.

Some trainers just edit save files(the change your level, stats kinds), some run while the games is playing(the make you invincible kind).

Variable/ram editors edit ram and allow you to change any value in the game, say lvl, skill points money ect... If your brother is just wants to rush through rpgs with a lvl 100 character then this would probably be ideal. There are plenty of free legit ones and they will work any game. There is a minimal level of intelligence and computer know how required to use it, but as long as your bro isn't more of a fratboy gamer it shouldn't be a problem.

Some trainers will pop up as false positive by anti-virus. I'm gonna say most of the trainers are virus-free, but of course you use them at your own risk. I used to use trainers on games like Dungeon Siege and Sacred so I can blow thru them faster as well. They should be safe to use but as always, backup important files first.
