Component vs. AV

I know that a component cable makes Gamecube games look better than when using the AV cable, I was just wondering how much better. Can anyone show me a side-by-side comparison of "game with component" vs. "Game with AV"?

The image is a lot sharper. Have you seen the difference between the two with a dvd player. Pretty much the same. The chain of command for quality goes RF coax

Hell, the difference between composite and S-video is pretty stunning. Played Mario Kart two weeks ago on my bigger TV with composite, then played it this weekend with S-video. Remarkably sharper picture. I can only imagine if component gives a similar improvement.

I read somewhere that the jump in picture quality is bigger from composite to s-video than it is from s-video to component. But I dont know.

though a component output is much purer than anything a composite (a/v) cable will display, a lot of it also depends upon your tv and how it outputs the signal. a side-by-side comparison isn't going to show you much since nearly every tv displays things differently depending on the comb filter, etc. it may end up looking dramatically better on someone's hdtv, but it's possible you won't be able to see as much of a difference on your crt.

suffice it to say that component is technically MUCH sharper in all cases due to the separation of the colors into individual signals. is that worth >$50 to you? if it's not, go with the s-video connection instead. it's nearly as good as component at 1/10th of the cost. I've got both and mostly can't tell the difference (I've got a 42" panasonic plasma).

S-Video is better than composite. I made the jump a few months back because I saw a S-Video thing for GC/PS2/Xbox for cheap. While the difference isn't night and day, it is there. Strangely, I think it's easier to tell with Cel-Shaded games.
Just to make sure. AV is the three cables Red, White, and Yellow, or is that composite.
I don't believe there technically is anything called "AV", but composite is the red, white, and yellow. S-video is the connector with the pain in the ass pins that looks like a wanna-be PS/2 (keyboard/mouse) connector, and component is the blue, green, and red.

I run my Gamecube through a 43" Samsung DLP with component cables, and I can tell you the cables are worth the $50 (@Play-Asia, cheaper than ebay) you pay for them. A huge leap in color correctness and graphics sharpness as well.

Since about 80% of Gamecube games run in progressive scan, you get a full 480p resolution if your TV supports it.

I 2nd this. I'd wait for Wii to get the component cables though. I'd IMAGINE Nintendo will release a component cables accessory with the Wii launch, which SHOULD work for gamecube as well if you don't buy a Wii
