I'm playing through DDS 1 right now and I'm at Coordinate 136 (or whatever it's called.) Now, I'm enjoying it so far, but does the game ever improve? The storyline right now doesn't seem to be going anywhere and that really does not make the dungeon crawling any better since it seems like I'm merely carrying out menial tasks... so does the game improve or is it this way the entire time? If it doesn't improve I might end up selling it since I've got other RPGs to play through that I know are excellent.

how to improve DDS:

1. sell on ebay

2. buy Nocturne.

3. win.

You're breaking my heart, DDS 1 is one of my most favorite rpg's - Anyway DDS1 is all about character development - DDS2 is where the story happens

Is Nocturne really that much better? I've got a sealed copy on my shelf and the videos I saw of the game looked wicked sick, but ya never know.

If you want story I wouldn't go with Nocturne. It is kind of lacking in story and charecter development. DDS is better than it in those aspects.

leave that sealed...it's worth a lot now and if it doesn't get a reprint, you can count on it attaining "Suikoden II" status next gen. ;)

I personally thought Nocturne was a ton better for a few reasons-- mainly, the gameplay is super addicting. the battles, enemy recruiting and fusing and story were right on the money because they were unique and well executed, where DDS felt more like every other RPG.

one thing-- the story is relatively dry for a good 30 hours of the game--it pretty much unfolds through text dialogue with NPCs (which is actually very well written and funny.) There's no voice acting and few cutscenes. there's a lot of exploring and battles. so for some people, it can be boring...but I fell in love with the gameplay elements and hardly noticed the passing time. Once the story picked up, it was really cool...

Most of the SMT, DDS1/2/Nocturne including, have somewhat 'subtle' storylines. Although there are a *lot* more cutscenes/moviescenes/plotscenes in DDS, they are definitely not 'interactive movies' that hold your hand through the whole story [Grandia 2]. And while DDS2 had more story, I was somewhat disappointed--the story itself was rather nonsensical, though I realize what it was 'trying' to do. Parts of it were cool, but I basically skipped a lot of the 'plot' in DDS2.
I liked the character system better in DDS than in Nocturne--I liked improving one set of characters, more than doing the 'collect them all' thing.

The story does go somewhere, but imho it's better as a 'subtle' story that leaves it to you to fill in the blanks, than when it goes into 'tell-all' mode in DDS2.

Chronologically story-wise, where do Nocturne, DDS1 and DDS2 go?

As for the order of release, Nocturne goes first, then DDS and finally DDS2. right?

DDS1, then DDS2. Nocturne is a different game thats not related at all.

DDS is amazing, Ima play some DDS2 tonite after I shower

(I gotta beat it in time for kingdom of Hearts)

Im seriously considering getting Serph's atma symbol tatted on my chest

Here a great tip for dds1 always pick the 1 choice when you the character ask you two question. This way you can get heat and argilla ultimate move in dds2 in last dungeon.

Nocturne is better because of the control monsters, tons of extra features, unquie chars and of course you get to use Dante.I didn't like the game as much as other people.I hate the part when you main char dies its gameover and you dont even have a chance to revive him like other rpgs.So many cheap enemies with instant death ko and you cant keep you skills it either keep them or delete them.

I'm 40 hours into Nocturne, and I'm pretty confident I'll never finish it. I'm extremely close to the end, but I know I need to spend about 10 more hours level grinding and fusing demons. I don't think it's worth it, but maybe I'll sit down with a pot of coffee one Saturday and knock that bitch out.
I'm excited to play the DDS games, though, if only for the belief that they're easier and have better stories. Nocturne is hard as hell.

So people who think DDS is amazing -- what's amazing about it? Coordinate 136 fucking sucks and I hate it to the point where I really want to get rid of the game altogether... so what would I be missing if I did that?

Tell me how this goes. I've got DDS1 and Nocturne both sealed. I'm thinking they might stay that way and I'll just wait for an offer I can't refuse a couple years down the road. I can always borrow my friend's Nocturne.

even if you do decide to play either one, you might as well get used copies so you can keep those sealed.. if you get lucky, they're both $15.99 used at Gamecrazy.

that's crazy. i was just about to say there aren't any gamecrazys around me and i found out there are 2 brand new ones including one in my town. i gotta get out more often.

still smoke free, apossum?

I loved DDS1 and have almost finished DDS2, which I find just as fun. I really hated the Coordinate 136 dungeon though. I'd say just stick with it, the story definitely picks up, and there are a lot of hidden bosses in DDS1 if you like doing everything possible in a game.

Alright. I'll finish the dungeon, play a little more, and then give up if it doesn't improve. But I will stick with it for a little longer.

Checked on Gamefaqs and I'm at the end of the dungeon... so a little more perseverence...

DDS1 seems more mainstream, and nocturne kinda made me think "What the *(&%%? (w/that dude in the wheelchair and the strange kid) Nocturne was just kinda creepy and kept me pulled into the world. Plus, it was one of the first games (after Dark Cloud 2) that made me think "Friggin Sweet Art!" I really liked the collecting aspect in the game and the fact that you can talk to the demons in battle and decide their fate (heh heh). Plus, like someone said, having Dante in the game makes it rock even more...

I picked up Nocturne from a guy wanting to sell it because it was too hard, and the next day found DDS at a store so I picked it up too. Anyway, I started Nocturne. I hated that SOB, I don't know what all the fuss is about. Started DDS, I played it about 6-8 hours. I just seems too dry and boring to me. I was going to keep going a little ways, but then my PS2 memory card got whiped out somehow so I lost my save. So, I never played it anymore. Overall, the game is not my cup o tee. I still have both, and I actually picked up DDS2 because I got a really good deal on it right when it came out, and one day if I have no other games to play I may start DDS again.

The isn' that bad you have to used the Shin Megami style of gameplay and story. The story is full of dark elements such as monsters, deception and lot of blood compare to your average goody-too shoe rpg were guy save the world and girl.

The key game play mechanics is the press turn and taking advantage to the enemies weakness.I like it a lot more compare to a typical turn based combat because it adds strategy element to the gameplay. The only down side of the press turn is that in hard mode the bosses get insane amount of critical hit and get a free attack.

Well I got past Coordinate 136 finally... I think the reason I was considering getting rid of the game was because I took a break from it in the middle of that dungeon and it was harder than hell to pick up again in the middle of that. Still, I really liked the story bit that happens at the end of the dungeon so I'll keep going in the game and I'm assuming that it really will get me interested again.

Was Coordinate 136 the fairy tale dungeon? I hated that place and all its damn puzzles and traps. The story does pick up a bit after that, but the characters really start taking off from there...

Well, you have to go there again if your planing to get the secret skill and battle against the Giant Jack Front. The secret skill is the key to beat the ultimate boss hiro in second playthrough

Alright, I got to the sewers (at the end of that dungeon now) and wow. The game did a complete 180. It's excellent now and I'm thoroughly enjoying it again. Thanks for helping me to not give up on the game.

deeeyamn, Im at the final dungeon in DDS2.

seriously, fuck daylite savings time,

I wanna play now, but I think sleeping would be the smarter choice.

Ima buy me some KHII in the morning tomorrow,

then beat DDS2 in the aftnoon, then go to work :(

I'm in the same boat. In the last dungeon and going to get kingdom hearts 2 tomorrow. Are you going to bother with extras and fight the 5 extra bosses shiva, seth, vinshu, neither jackfrost and satan.I'm already having a hard time beating vinshu and Shiva.I can't imagine how tough Satan going to be.

How many hours into the game are you? I stopped playing DDS around 7 hours in, but am thinking about trying to get into it again

Well I got to the sewers at about 12 hours... I left my PS2 on for a little while, but that's a pretty good estimate.... where are you at right now?

Actually, I think that as soon as you get to the end of Coordinate 136, the game starts to pick up dramatically. The boss fight at the end of the dungeon is really the turning point.

Looking back though, I think I would've liked the Coordinate 136 dungeon better if I wasn't so under levelled.

Holy shit, are you joking? Doesn't the deluxe only go for like $60-70?

I love idiots on Ebay. I sold a sealed copy of Ys for the PS2 for $70 a few months back.

so I bought KHII,

I filled a full tank of gas in my car,

I filled a full stomach of food in my body,

now Im ready to beat me some DDS2 bitches!!

fatbeer>> I donno anything about the extra bosses,

I havent read any faqs about it.

but r they all in the final dungeon,

coz I dont think I can leave dat place

I thought the Deluxe Edition was going for around $80. I mean MSRP was originally $54.99 i think. So it's not to big of a jump up. I am expecting it to jump in price later because of rarity/demand. Even if GQD reprinted it in the future(if it does get pricey) I don't think they would have the art box and sountrack CD awesomeness.

$105 is pretty high though, Did you grab it from GameCrazy?

I forget where I am in the game, i stopped play a long time ago.

I personally got the game from Gamecrazy... $20 new for the deluxe. djkunai said that Gamecrazy's officially out of DDS 1 right after I bought my copy... so I must've gotten the last one or something.

Oh, and please don't use "crap" anywhere near the word "soundtrack." If there's one thing that the SMT games are perfect in, it's the music category.

Wish I could unload this Ultimate Bundle. I don't need 2 copies of both games and would rather just have the games to play.

Well mine ended at $120. I thought it was a joke but the guy actually paid me yesterday. I bought it for $10 at Toys R Us when they had that clearance a few months ago. ;)

That's pretty damn awesome.

And I'm at the end of the game now... it really did pick up quite a bit. I'm actually really enjoying the game now and I can't wait to start DDS 2 (which is supposedly superior in terms of story aspects.)

ahhh. I jus beat DDS2 today!!

rite before I went to work!!

I wanted to finish it on sunday.

but the damn final dungeon is soooooo long.

and the final boss is such a pussy too.

I beat him on my 2nd try, dat fool could barely hurt me.

I only had to heal like, twice.

and it was only HP too, I never had to replenish MP.

the mid bosses in the last dungeon were harder than the final boss,

seriously.

Finished it just now... it ended up being excellent. How does DDS 2 compare in terms of quality? I'm deciding between playing DDS 2 or Suikoden V next... I have both... dunno which to play though.

I've played nocturne (several times).

Definitely one of the hardest RPGs I've ever played + TONS of stuff to do = very good game.

I completely missed DDS1....Is it worth buying for $45 or so used (or is it a huge letdown compared to Nocturne)?
