Do any of those PS1/PS2 to PS3 controller adapters work well?

Moreover, do any of them work with a good percentage of PS3 games? I ask because I have 2-3 DS 2 controllers collecting dust in my closet and there's a few games I really want to finish but some parts require serious button mashing.

Suffice to say, I'd much rather beat the living shit out of a controller I can replace for $5-20 than my Dual Shock 3, which Sony is still gouging us $55 to replace should ours break.

I checked out one adapter on DealExtreme, which even has a PS button on it and the ability to plug in FOUR controllers at once, but before I bite I definitely wanna know that I'm not going to have a doorstop of a peripheral that's not supported at all anymore.

Anyone have a PS1/PS2 to PS3 controller adapter and have some experiences to share? I don't give a rat's ass about SixAxis bullshit or even really vibration, so long as it'll allow the PS2 controllers to work and work as intended.

I saw some use at a tournament a ps2 adapter for a ps2 arcade stick so id prob go ahead and say they work. If they are good enough for a tournament they should be good for regular gaming.

I know that one of the recent ps3 updates turned a few of those ps2 to ps3 adapters into paper weights/bricks. I'm sure the expensive Pelican adapter still works (but that's ridiculously overpriced, if you can find it it). I think the Arcade stick thread/fighting will have more information, if you ask there instead.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up buying a generic one from the one GS store that had them in stock. However, it looks like it's essentially just a USB cable spliced with two PS1/PS2 controllers ports.

Unfortunately, when plugging it in with a PS2 controller attached it makes the XMB act like someone who's having a seizure is controlling it, since it makes the XMB move back and forth, up and down and in and out of menus rapidly.

However, using it with an original Dual Shock/PSOne controller allows me to play PSN games like Mortal Kombat II using the controller.

I think the one from DealExtreme may work better than this basic one, but I'm not ready to plunk down the $15 to find out.

Apparently, I lost the receipt for the one I picked up, but if/when Sony may decide to make all PS3's BC somehow I'll at least have it to be able to play PS2 games with a PS2 controller(hopefully).

I'm debating one of the better ones for $15 or so, but I wanna know for sure if ALL of these adapters will be DOA due to a firmware update that locked them out partially or not, so I don't waste any money on one and find it's a brick that's useless.

I picked up two of the Pelican ones that have been discontinued. They both work awesome and have the PS button on the adapter. I have seen them occasionally used at Gamestop stores for a reasonable price. I remember them selling for a ton on ebay, not sure about now. The only drawback is they don't seem to support rumble. I bought a $5 one at Radioshack (or The Shack as it were) which was a generic black one. This one seemed to work pretty well too and with rumble but it doesn't have a PS button and didn't seem to work with my DDR pads. The Pelican ones work extremely well for DDR and have support for the older Guitar Hero games as well.

Thanks for the heads up on the Pelican brand ones, Purkey. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for them. However, the next closest GS to me with ANY of these in stock is almost 40 miles away, so I may have to forgo trying to buy one with my GS credit again anytime soon unless I'm up for a trek.

Thanks again and I'd definitely like to find one that I could possibly use on some PS3 games as well as when/if software BC becomes a reality on some of my PS2 backlog that's collecting dust.

I've heard that the Pelican ones were discontinued though. Know of anywhere still selling them and how much they run? Moreover, any idea if they'll work with games like GTA 4 and Warhawk? I just want to have a comfortable and cheap controller to button mash on should I need to mash buttons on any game, rather than destroying my Dual Shock 3.

Crap. They're only available on Ebay now? I guess I have to hope I can find one in the wild, since paying $50 for one of these isn't exactly what I'd consider a deal, unless the PS2 controllers worked FLAWLESSLY with almost every PS3 game I tried with it.

Like others have said, the Pelican adapter.

The other adapter that is just as good as the Pelican is the REAL converter (also included in that shoryuken link) which I have myself. Unfortunately, that's also discontinued now. Once word got out of how good it was, ppl bought 'em up with the quickness lol.

So either the Pelican or REAL adapter work well with the PS3? I have a shitload of old Xbox 1 controllers I could use on the PS3 if either of those adapters allows for that. The only really sucky part would probably be mapping the functions for the L1/R1, since quite a few shooters use R1 for shooting the guns and that'd be a pain in the ass using the black or white buttons for it....

I have a TAC (the ant commandos) adapter that retails for $20. It was originally released to be used mostly with Guitar Hero controllers, but also works with DSs. It does not have a PS Home button, but I think it's programmed if you hit select+start to activate the XMB, at least with guitar controllers. I honestly haven't used it that much though, but can test it out for you if you want. If you got a couple games that I might have and want me to check, it wouldn't be a problem.

Could you test out GTAIV, Little Big Planet and Mercenaries 2 by any chance, bornrunnin?

I may just break down and look for one of the Pelican ones though, since I believe someone said you can also use an Xbox controller with them and I have a ton of those, including one which has the white and black buttons in the same position as the L1/R1 buttons on the PS3 controllers.

Thanks either way though, bornrunnin.

I bought this one from eforcity.com for $6 shipped (and got a few cents back w/ bing cashback haha), and it has worked on every game I have used it w/ (I have a library of 45 PS3 games) flawlessly except for Resistance 2. It seems that the only potential problem it has are with games that might use the L2/R2 triggers based on sensitivity. That or 1st party games by Sony have tried to disable the adapters' functionality with updates. (My play w/ a racing-type-L2/R2 game like the Fuel demo was fine though).

So in essence, I was playing the Resistance 2 beta flawlessly but w/ the retail game, only the L2/R2 buttons didn't work. Odd. I attribute it to the update you need to install w/ the game when you first play it. You can map all the buttons in Resistance 2 though, so if you mapped L2/R2 to some other buttons, it'd work.

LittleBigPlanet worked for me, though I feel like I should pop it in again and test out everything to make sure.

So for $6, I thought it was a great deal (minus the rumble, sixaxis (but nearly all my games don't use it), and missing Playstation button) for a spare controller to use for multiplayers and such. Course, you need to have a working Sixaxis or DualShock 3 to quit out games (via the Playstation button) but its a small price for saving $30+ on a new controller.

I have yet to try it with Guitar Hero or other additional accessory type games like arcade sticks and DDR pads so don't know if those PS2 accessories will work with it.

And the rumble in PS2 games (if you have a backward compatible PS3) doesn't work, so be aware of that.

To answer your question simply, yes, the adapter works well with the majority of PS3 games without lag or any problems whatsoever. I have my PS3 updated to the latest firmware as well.

That's the exact one I picked up from Gamestop for $2.99 and it doesn't work one bit with a PS2 controller. It worked with a PSone Dual Shock, but not the PS2 Dual Shock. When a PS2 Dual Shock was plugged in, the XMB jumped all over the place.
So either the Pelican or REAL adapter work well with the PS3?
Yeah. If you manage to get your hands on either one of those, you're good. The REAL adapter also makes use of the PS button (to access the XMB) as well by pressin' Select and Up.

Thanks. I guess buying one of those adapters for $50+ ONE time will be better than buying PS3 controllers @ $50 a pop multiple times should there be a game that really requires ALOT of button mashing.

You can always get a warranty at BestBuy or Walmart for an extra $5 or $10 and they'll replace the controller for you. Give me a couple days to test out my adapter, need to find some free time.

I thought Best Buy did away with those replacement plan warranties a little while ago?

As for throwing a warranty on a controller I already paid $50-60 for, I'm really looking to go CHEAPER and not pay extra. Plus, if I could, I'd buy it from a store I have credit at(FYE only currently), so I'm not spending real cash on it.

Thanks for testing out the adapter for me, bornrunnin. If I wasn't so cheap, I'd just take a trek the 30+ miles to the next Gamestop with one in stock and hope it's the Pelican one on the shelf. Even if it were the REAL one, it would only cost me about $5 worth of gas and a bit of my time, since I still have about $15 in GS credit and they only charge $2.99 for any of those adapters no matter which one it is.
