Hi everone,

Well you knew it had to happen sooner or later. How can any store give you $27 for a game like Lotus Extreme Challenge, $26 for Room Zoom and countless other outrageous deals and survive?

Well, they don't. Not for long, anyway.

I recently bought some games for $9 which fetch $20+ at FYE and headed down to my local store to trade them in for obscene amounts of credit (like I diid during the TRU $5 sale...got $575 in store credit from FYE for about $40 in purchases).

Well, the manager at the store tells me they aren't taking trades because the store is CLOSING. All games are 20% off, so I make the most of it and snag Mech Assault 2 for $40.

Then I head down to another FYE about 30 miles away at another mall and....guess what..they've already closed down permanently (was there about 4 weeks earlier and had no clue).

I finally find another FYE subsidiary store (different name, same company) and the manager tells me FYE is CLOSING more than 2/3 of ALL its stores nationwide.

I told him about all my good deals they've given me in the past and, being a gamer, he had a pretty good laugh and couldn't believe how much I scored in credit from the TRU sale. Even acknowledged himself it's probably why they're going under.

Another FYE in the area closed down about four months ago, so these closings were not really unforseen. However, I had absolutely no idea it would be on this large of a scale.

Just wanted to give anyone with outstanding credit at FYE (and I know there are a TON of fellow CAG like me who do) to scoop up what you can FAST while there's still a store near you. Too bad you can't swap the credit for gift cards...that way you'd still have the Web site to order from.

Not sure if the store closings will affect other stores owned by Transworld Entertainment (Coconuts, etc.) since we have none here and the manager wasn't sure, either.

A sad day for all of us CAGs for sure, but I think we all kinda KNEW it was coming given the insane trade-in prices. I mean, WTF, $26 for Room Zoom??? Games I traded in during the TRU sale were still seen sitting on the shelves at insane prices four months after I traded them in.

Hopefully this info gets out to everyone with FYE credit. If you know anyone, pass the word along as a common courtesy.

Really sucks because I was going to use a mass amount of my credit on the PlayStation Portable and some nice games for it when it hits later this year.

Not many big new releases, either, in the next few months so I'm left to pick up whatever old stuff they've got left.

amen to that brother... just cashed mine inyesterday to get my sis a new ps2....

not only that... i was headed to the store in the village (manhattan) last week when i saw they were closing down....

heard all about it... didnt know is was 2/3 of the stores... wow.

we really hit them hard huh? LOL.

wow, I didn't expect that. Hmm.. maybe I should get some dvds if they're going to be on clearance prices.
wow, I didn't expect that. Hmm.. maybe I should get some dvds if they're going to be on clearance prices.
if they're worth it...right now, most of the dvds in the fyes around me are $23.99 or higher....a clearance to them may be $19.99

Actually, did they have this planned for awhile with the "no trade-in for cash" policy during the holidays? It kind of makes sense if I think about it since management didn't know why they couldn't pay in cash anymore.

There are three FYE's in the St. Louis area, and only two of them do games. I'll have to go swing by the reasonably close one when I get a chance and pick up some good stuff at 20% off.

damn 2/3 of FYE? So people are going to be losing their jobs? I still have about 80 worth of FYE store credit also!

I doubt that the trade in prices they offered had anything to do with some of the stores closing, especially 2/3rds of them. Even if people on this site did take advantage of the trade in policies they have, it had little effect on their business. People fail to realize the few members of this site that did trades there, still don't represent even 10% of FYE's customer base. FYE probably can't compete any longer with BB,CC, etc. I mean, why would someone buy a dvd/cd/etc. from FYE anymore considering how high the prices were to begin with. $16.99 for a CD? $24.99 for a DVD? The same goods can be had for the most part at a larger retailer for much cheaper.

I wonder how suncoast stays in business for so long lol

DVDs at my FYE are outrageously priced. I've seen some dvds priced at near $30. To them $24 is considered a sale price. The strange thing is that their used games are reasonably priced.

Yep, this is exactly the same thing that happened to Sam Goody.
Honestly, the mall CD/DVD vendors cater to the uninformed. Who the heck pays 20 bucks for a single CD...
Obviuosly not enough people.

I never bought a damn thing at FYE. Everything is so damn expensive there and they seem to cater more towards the hip-hop crowd.

Here in the Bay area there are so many kick ass local record stores like Rasputins, Ameoba and others that only a moron would go to a chain store. I do like Tower Records though.

Sometimes I find good deals at FYE. That is where I got my Simpsons Season 3 for $14.99 new. I also got a mint used Ranma 1/2 Season One box set for $49.99.

Thank fucken God! I freaken HATE FYE. In my town they are the biggest Rip off. We nicked named it 'fuck You Everywhere!'

I mean gesh these guys sucked. My Parents went to get me the Indana Jones box set last xmas and they charged them $75 for it while Suncoast who was 3 stores down were chargeing $30 for it.

I'm going to be more then happy to see FYE leave my mall. Maybe they'll put something usefull there.

I myself have never been able to trade in games at my local FYE, and they do have massivily jacked up prices but i find that if i go on release day for DVDs I can always get the movie I want for 9.99 w/ the rebate of course...thats the only good thing about FYE in my neck of the woods...
I wonder how suncoast stays in business for so long lol
I'm still wondering that myself. Every DVD 'sale' they've had doesn't even begin to bring their DVD prices down to that of other stores.

Thanks for the warning, I still have around $150 store credit left. I guess I better spend it soon.

I agree about them being overpriced though. Had it not been for their trade ins, I would never shop there.

There goes my plans to get Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing DS and other future release games there :(

Also, it probably didn't help them that they had too many stores open in each mall. In the 2 closest malls near me, they each had 2 FYE stores in them. Within the past year, both malls went from 2 FYE stores to 1 FYE store but it seems excessive.

omfg noooooooo

i have over 160 credit for fye i been saving for when they get the ds back in stock within the next few weeks. son of a bitch

what 9.99 deal do u speak of??

that's because the actual cost on most new release dvds is usually more than $20. used items can be reasonably priced because they dictate what they pay for them, whereas new items they don't have much of a choice. it's hard to make money when all you sell are cds, dvds and video games when you aren't selling refrigerators and microwaves.

Hmm, hope this doesn't effect my wherehouse.com credit. I just started taking advantage of their offers right before they stopped (temporarily?) taking in game trade ins. Turned about $45 into $150 credit.

Having multiple FYE stores in the mall may be related to the change from "Record Town" stores to "FYE Express" that happened a while back.

Why don't you buy the games for it instead?

Never traded anything into them and most of their stuff is just too high. Even Suncoast is more reasonable than them. Suncoast stays in business I believe because it caters to a select group and also have dvds that are more difficult to find/can't be found anymore. Such as Anime which my Suncoast has two walls of. They are great when they have Anime sales.

Any CAGs in the Portland area know if the Lloyd Center store is closing or not?

The last thing I ever bought at an FYE was an Anthrax CD (Return Of The Killer A's) on clearance for $4.99. \m/ I don't remember how long ago that was.

THEY EARNED MY KAIBASH...Just like camelot, nrm, etc.

Next up: TRU, Those mall pizza shops that sell slices for 4 bucks, and circuit city (I'm working on this one).

The last thing I bought from them was Anthrax Penikufesin , the import EP .

While it does suck for people to lose jobs, FYE deserved it.

Their DVDS, CDs, Games and just about everything else was WAY overpriced. When my local Media Play closed up I wasn't really suprised, granted I got Steel Bat for $100, and Soul Calibur 2 on release there, but most of their deals sucked. I mean, Resident Evil 2 for $25 new on DVD?! Oh, my bad, It's on sale for $22 this week! Come on, with Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Circuit City going $10 lower then your prices, you can't compete.

I am also amazed at how Suncoast manages to stay open, but it seems they have a hardcore following when it comes to Anime and select movies. They are able to get certain movies that no other stores have, at a high cost. I still think Suncoast isn't too far off from getting the shaft.

Don't forget their posters and toys, they sell plenty of that stuff for jacked up prices but hey outside of ebay some of that stuff is quite hard to find. I hope they go next, with anime becoming more available and rare stuff being reasonably common on the internet there really is no need for suncoast either.

Blah I don't really care. The only things I bought at FYE were some used anime dvds that were around 10-12$. Everything else is a freaking ripoff.

I've been wondering how long they were going to stay in business with the crappy pricing and few customers I see whenever I (admittedly seldomly) go to the mall. Their trade-in system was one of the few that I haven't exploited a bit...but now I kinda wish I had. :D

What say we post the stores we know for sure are closing? I can lend some time to compile a list, much as StriderTurbulence has done in the FYE trade credit topic.

I remember when sam goody AND suncoast was in every mall, then fye bought most of the sam goodys (I know of 3 left, used to know 10+). I wonder if the fye's in new england are closing? I need a store with a year round leniant return policy.

Uh, I actually really like FYE?

I got a Dreamcast Fishing Controller there new for 99 cents, and Breath of Fire 4 for $8, and Tennis 2k1 (DC) for $5.... All within the last year or so. They were really good for older, hard-to-find games (because nobody ever goes there for games, I guess).

Ah well. The Suncoasts by me went out of business many years ago. Before they closed, they put everything on clearance - i got some anime DVDs for like 50% off or something crazy... Watch for clearances here too.
