FF VII Disc 3 MISPRINT?!

So I've been on a quest lately to finish a game I never quite made it all of the way through - FF VII.

Last night, i'll killed Hojo, and after all of the events took place I was prompted to pop in disc 3. I put it in and the screen went dark as if to load, and the splash screen came right back up to put the disc back in. After ejecting it and putting it back into my PS2 several times, I gave up because it was late, I had to get up early, and figured i'd deal with it the next day.

Today I get home from school, and with disc 3 still in the PS2, I decide to just start it up in hopes of it recognizing the disc and working. I walk into my kitchen and hear some really strange music and think that my roommate must've put in a different game after I went to bed or before I got home.

I walk over to the TV and I see this on the screen:

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS
SUPER SPONGE

It then hits me, I DON'T OWN THAT fuckING GAME.

I turn off my PS2, eject the disc, and hold in my hands the FF VII disc 3. I just can't believe it. How could this happen?

Has anyone else had this problem before? I believe i've actually encountered it with one other squaresoft title, but the problem then was I had 2 of the same disc and was missing one entirely. But to have this disc that looks EXACTLY AS IT SHOULD but contain the wrong game data? It's just bizarre. I wish I had a video camera to put a video of it up or something, but I don't.

Also, this is the "Greatest Hits" version of the game if that makes any difference.

Anyway, it just sucks because i'm so close to the end of the game, I power up the PS2 and on comes Spongebob? After the anger settled, I realized how hilarious the situation actually was. Although I hate Spongebob.

But yeah, anyone else have a story similar to this?

No, I bought it at a retailer (I think CC or BB) in brand new condition. The disc looks completely legitimate. I honestly think it's just some misprint of the disc.

Just bizarre.

Ok, but it will be hard to prove that the FFVII disc is in the PS with the Spongebob game on the screen. Will do it, though.

I just emailed Square to see if they've had similar situations. :)

I doubt it.

Supersponge didn't come out until 2001 and it was published by THQ not Square.

Sounds like you either got ripped off or you are lying.

There was a PS1 version
SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge THQ 09/21/01 US

GH Final Fantasy VII's hit around 2000. Not sure when they stopped production.

Edit: Gah you edited your post!

Why would I make this up?

And yes, it is the GH version. Not sure how it could have happened. Pics inc shortly, i'll try and get ahold of a video camera for some YouTube love.

Wait. My digital camera can take some shitty video.

I'll make a video in just a few minutes. Anyone know a good place to host one for free?

Thanks!

besides youtube?

Unless Final Fantasy IX has Spongebob that you can play why would it matter what case it was sitting on?

Yeah, Wiki steered me wrong and only listed the GBA version. My mistake.
Coincidence that it's sitting on top of a FFIX case?
Yes.

I normally store games I plan on playing soon on top of my PS2, and when I was trying to get a picture of the disc in the PS2 and the TV screen at the same time, the games were causing a bad reflection on the disc. I moved them onto the ground and that was the nearest case to put disc 3 on when I took the picture.

But yeah, that doesn't really matter. But I figured i'd explain it for all of the unnecessary skepticism anyway.

YouTube didn't like it in quicktime format, so I hosted it on Google. It's "processing" so i'll get it up here ASAP.

There are ways that you could actually fake that video....

But I don't really know why you would make something like this up. If that is actually real, some FF 7 nut would pay big bucks for that I bet.

sounds to me like someone hit the wrong button in a factory in china when they were switching from FFVII to Spongebob. Usually these discs are produced at contracted out facilities, especially this late in the consoles life span. It is plausible that, perhaps, you got one of the very last copies if not the last copy in a print run or the final print run of FFVII.

Just my thoughts.

If anything i'll likely just end up trading it for a legit disc 3. :)

Whatever floats your boat.

This just reminds me of a little story for some reason...... Mostly because you said you were pissed when you found out that it was the wrong disc.
When Star Wars 3 came out, they had these replica Light Sabers from Best Buy you could order for 30 bucks. Well, I ordered the Darth Sideous one, which was mostly black. When I got it I opened it up to display on my TV. I opened it and it was solid gold. I was originally pissed because it looked like shit compared yo the solid black one. Turns out that the company that made it put out a limited amount of solid gold ones that were not marked on the box or anything, just kind of a random lucky thing if you got it. I ended up selling the thing on Ebay for about 250 bucks.

Just something to think about.... sometimes what makes you pissed off originally can make you enough money to buy what you wanted in the beginning.

He means he thinks you are going to sell it for profit....

The lighting does change when the Spongebob screen starts up. He could have easily just pieced two videos together.

yes but i also meant that its not real, and hes lying about the whole thing to begin with

Ugh.

Well after this i'm done explaining myself, because it doesn't really matter. I was only curious if this had happened to anybody else before.

The lighting changes because of this thing called a camera's aperature (sp?). When the spongebob screen comes on, the camera lense "closes" a little because it doesn't need all of that new light in the frame.

Plus, it changes AFTER spongebob appears on the screen. Meaning if I did take the time to make up this elaborate story. Then on a whim, take some pictures of it. THEN after that, stage a video w/ choreographing and editing, you would probably notice a shift in the video before spongebob came up.

Anyway, that's it. Thought it was interesting/bizarre.

The greatest hits discs manufactured at that time surely came from the same factory, just were ordered by different publishers. This was a mixup of the most tragically comedic level.

Here's how you do a video to prove this. Show you putting in the game, like you did with this video. Let Spongebob load up, then move the camera up like you did.

Then, WHILE STILL SHOWING SPONGEBOB ON SCREEN, move the camera to show you pulling the FF7 disc out.

no lighting change

Good idea, Logain.

And...this is fucking hilarious. If you're going to sell it, send it to some gaming sites 1st (someone mentioned Kotaku) to build up an interest.

A misprint of one of the most loved RPGs of the last 10 years? This could be epic.

i'm pretty sure it's fake.

if anyone else noticed on the disc, the number was just "3". after looking at some of the other final fantasies that I own on the ps1, they all say "disc #"

so, if it was a legitamate copy of FFVII, shouldn't it say "disc #" instead of just the number?

Besides what Slain pointed out the other thing thats odd about the disc is the SCUS-94163. If it was a GH disc it would have said SCUS-94163GH.

Looked up some auctions on Ebay and none of the Disc's say either Disc # on any of the disc's just the number. Nor do any have the SCUS -####GH like most GH games do. This is indeed a true copy. Ebay that shit and make mucho dollars. :)

Well, I found a scan of all 3 discs on a gaming site:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/final-fantasy-vii/cover-art/gameCoverId,30606/

http://www.mobygames.com/game/final-fantasy-vii/cover-art/gameCoverId,30607/

http://www.mobygames.com/game/final-fantasy-vii/cover-art/gameCoverId,30608/

They all look identical to his, right down to the serial # and lack of the word, "disc" on each one.

I'll double check my copy when I get home, but I'm pretty sure that (at least from the large picture of his disc) it's legit. I'd definitely like to see a higher quality video, though, but based on those scans, the disc he shows is a real FF7 disc 3.

Yep. I agree also.

i dont doubt that things like this happen.

I just bought Prison Break S2. What looked like Disc 3 from the silkscreen actually turns out to be Disc 5 in content(so i had two disc 5's - dammit). Now at least its in the same family of content, but it shows that mixups like this are possible.
