This mod has been talked about in many other forums. It's a cheap and easy way to make the Dpad on your PSP more compliant with harder to control games. Like fighting games, where you have to perform quarter circles and such.

Here's the like, follow the directions carefully:
http://ufighterx.com/guides/videogame/pspdpadfix/pspdpadfix.htm

Here's the materials you will need.

1 NES sleeve or similar thin flexible plastic

Small phillips screwdriver

Hot glue (I like hot glue because it can easily be removed if you mess up or want to revert back to factory state)

Clear tape (Not necessary but makes life easier)

Canned air (Not necessary but I don't think you want all that dust in your system)

Petroleum jelly or vegetable oil (Not necessary but reduces friction between the dpad and rubber pad)

Razor blade or scissors

Doing this makes an exceptional difference in the controls. It makes Darkstalkers almost flawless. The only drawback to this mod is it voids the warranty. So be warned.

you need a tiny philips...the screws are miniscule and easy to strip. it'd be nice to know which size exactly...

ENGLISH MOTHERfuckER...DO YOU SPEAK IT??

Ok so I bought some compressed air, I ordered a NES sleeve and I just ordered a glue gun. I already have the razor blade and tape. Now I need to find that screwdriver.

whaaaat?!?! nah man, I went to private school both grade school and high school.

it sucked ass yo. I hated it.

I was in honors english too!! all 4 years! I never gotta A in it tho...
Son I aints gots da' cases layin' around ma crib ta make dem' modz.
hay man it's all good, u only need one.

Cool cool. I'm glad you weren't one of those forum assholes who gets all defensive. I wouldn't do the mod because of the warranty. That's mainly why I'm not opening the PSP. I know I can find an NES case, it's just that damn sticker behind the batter that's a pain to try and make it look like I didnt open it.

If more games try and follow what SF3 Alpha did, I think I'll be okay. The controls in that game aren't half bad.

u kno u dont even need a NES case u kno...

jus a piece of thin bendy plastic.

like for me, it's the cover of an old "no boundaries" 3 subject notebook.

it's funny coz the notebook is called "no boundaries"

but what happens when u keep on writing in it??

u hit a freakin BOUNDARIE!!

and then u gotta go to the next line, or even a next page!

it's like wtf mate?!?! the name is sooooo misleading.

now u see why I suck at english?!?!

coz I cant even TAKE GOOD NOTES!!

so this quarter I got a different notebook! it's called "five star"

which is also wtf coz it's THREE subject!!! not five!!

it doesnt even have any stars either!! just like... lines and stuff...

I mean,,, u can draw stars in it, but why would u do that??

Id rather draw Goku and pikachu.

ok, here's a gamefaqs post about the dpad mod

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=928337&topic=25896243

what's interesting, is another dude named NeoZeRo35 was able to mod jus by using "artist tape" or any type of masking tape would work.

I modded my d-pad too after seeing that link. My problem was that when I tried to press up, the psp kept reading it as up/left. So after hours of opening and closing my psp and testing things out i found a more simple method for me. I found my artist's tape (very similar to masking tape) and layered it five times. Then I took a hole puncher and punched out 4 holes. With those holes I just stuck them behind the d-pad in the 4 directions so that they line up with the circles on the rubber piece inside the psp. Now, everything works out fine for me, plus I don't have to use glue, because I'm afraid of permanent disasters.

and then...

ok. finally got a chance to re-open my psp and take pictures.

http://img302.imageshack.us/my.php?image=psp26gw.jpg

this shows which screws to take off. green is good, and red is bad (well, not bad just unnecessary).

http://img302.imageshack.us/my.php?image=punchedholes1cp.jpg

this is just a quick picture of what i mean about punching holes out, just in case someone didn't get it. also, i did layer the tape 5 times the first time. i now did 6 layers because i like my psp that much more sensitive. ^_^

http://img528.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stickingthem6sx.jpg

and this picture is just showing where to stick them behind the d-pad, not the rubber piece.

now you're d-pad should be good and sensitive, just the way i (and now you) like it. hehe. hope these pictures helped. also, since i did re-open my psp, i decided to put a droplette of canolla oil on the rubber circle parts. it's not required but it makes the d-pad a little lose which is good i guess since it's a little tighter now inside. have fun guys.

hey shutup.

OK the results are in!!!

your main man JEKKI has successfully dpad modded his PSP like a baby Frankenstein!

I used the 5 layers of tape with a hole puncher method since I didnt have a glue gun and coz it's easy to undo / redo.

I tried first to play my x-men mutant apocolypse and it was like

"oh shit cyclops! shoot those optic blasts all over the place! left right high low! u got it all baby!"

"damn wolverine! tornado claw these fools up to the sky like Red and Meth! la la la la la la la laaaaaa~~"

so motions are good to go,

next to make sure no direction gets any unnecessary stress, I popped in my WE9,

the homey goes up when I press up, down when I press down, left left, right right,

but most importantly, he goes in diagonal motions like a charm!! what a pro! score those goals bitch!!

so all in all, it was good, and EVERYBODY needs to do it!!

also interesting note, I tried testing it out before screwing everything back in.

when I booted my snes9xtyl, it kept scrolling down, like in the menu and stuff. I thought I did something wrong so I took it apart and redid it.

after that it still was scrolling down, I was like what the hell, but decided to boot up a game anyways.

then, I kept on going into turbo mode and frameskipping, so what had happened was the analog nub got f*cked up, I was kinda distressed.

but then I held my PSP tightly and it stopped tripping out like that, apparently the analog thing goes crazy when the psp is any tiny bit loose.

so... when I screwed it all back together everything worked out perfectly and now my PSP is better than any of yours!

bitches!

i just did this as well. you do not have to remove the screws under you warranty sticker. you may not even need to remave any screws in the battery area at all.

so *you do not need to void your warranty*

i removed the 5 screws, made a cross out of plastic from a ps2 cable blister pack, and put it in. now when i hit left it also hits up. very lame. i made 2 different ones and had issues with both.

its a very inprecise mod, i dont recommend it.

i may try making it a bit smaller, and lubing it up, but still. might end up reverting all together.

when u do the plastic cross method, u gotta cut that thing and glue it quite perfect.

coz I too have heard ppl saying like "I push up but I go up-right"

use the layered tape / hole punch method.

no glue, and u put one dot on each direction so u dont interfere w/ the other directions.

it works perfect.
