I am making the Dreamcast battery replaceable, by soldering a battery socket into the system.

I am trying to solder these into place...

They fit perfectly into the 3 holes where the original battery was permanently soldered.
Do I solder it on the top, or the bottom?

Put it in the same way the other battery was.  Pretty sure the battery would be standing up in the pic you posted.  You'd solder the pins on the other side of the board.

The board is single sided.  The side shown is bare fiberglass and wouldn't take solder because there are no traces/pads.  The other side has the traces and pads.

Yes, it does stand up...
I was using a picture from a "Fixit" guide

Yeah, so you'd stick the holder so it stands up like the old battery used to, then solder the pins sticking out on the other side of that board.

That was my assumption, just don't want to screw it up you know?
I don't know why the old one was literally soldered in like that.. but this makes a good replacement.

If you haven't soldered it yet, I hope you also ordered the Dreamcast controller port repair kit too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Dreamcast-Controller-Port-Jack-Repair-Kit-Resistor-Capacitor-Fuse-/181082668278?hash=item2a295e3cf6:g:SQkAAMXQOQdRICeC

Just remember you HAVE to use a ML2032 battery because it's the one that works with the recharge circuit. If you use a regular coin battery you risk destroying your Dreamcast. https://www.amazon.com/Maxell-Rechargable-lithium-motherboard-battery/dp/B00CJ3T188
