Bethesda'a press release:

"Starting this Friday, Dec. 22, Xbox 360 gamers will be able to download Mehrunes Razor for free from Xbox Live. This offer is only for a limited time...from Dec. 22 to Dec. 31. On Monday, Jan. 1 it will go back to its standard price. So be sure to log on to Xbox Live beginning this Friday and download your free copy of Mehrunes Razor! Happy Holidays from Bethesda Softworks."

Ohhh.... Christmas present. Awesome for me who didn't buy it, shitty for people who did.

Not to be a bitch about it but it would have been awesome if it was NEW DLC they put up for free for a limited time, so Oblivion fans who already bought this didn't get the shaft.
 
Nice! Bethesda makes a game that is actually worth $60 and gives us DLC for free. Some other people should take some notes.
 
Can I download this even if I dont have Oblivion right now, because I might get oblivion in the near future after a price drop.

You should be able to. I downloaded the free maps for Battle for Middle Earth 2 and I still haven't picked up that game...

as for the download, luckily I was about to buy it, but decided to hold off once i leveled high enough to where I wanted... now it's a no brainer :)

Rather, I think we should consider this the "We're sorry" for Horse Armor.

Sweet! Played it on the PC when it came out and am going back through on 360!

Does this make up for creating that stupid horse armor?
 
Finally free Oblivion content. I hear Mehrunes Razor is huge and one of the best Oblivion downloads.

Really all the Oblivion downloads should be free. The game sold 2+ million copies, and I'm sure they made a huge profit on the game. The extra content should be a thank you gift to the millions who bought the game.
 
This is a stupid question, but I'm a 360 newbie (getting Oblivion though for Christmas).

For the downloads, do you need to have Xbox live (pay the $50 for the year or whatever it is)? I rarely play games online, but I'd drag my 360 over into the computer room to hook up the high speed net connection if I can download this for free without it?)

You get Xbox Live Silver for free which will allow you to download demos, purchase content and arcade games. etc. Xbox Live Gold is what costs $50 a year and allows multiplayer online. You can still get this content without paying the $50.

Mehrune's Razor is suprisingly not as useful as the Crimson Eviscerator you'll get from the "evil" download quest (can't remember the name right now...) and you'll need to truge through a HUGE dungeon just to get it, unlike the CE which is just sitting around.

That said, you can't fault it if it's free. Go forth and conquer!

I was noticing that as well-- i downloaded it, of course, but wondered why it was so small. You'd think that an entire new questline would bring about a little more than half a meg of content.

I could be wrong though. I sold my copy of Oblivion back in July. I'll need to have games and flicks send me out a copy to give it a shot.

true, but at least you can make a load of money off the quest.

as for file size, it's small due to a majority of the content just going into coding (tell the game to do this and this). For example: the cave structure and layouts are the same as all the other caves and the add on uses the same resources.
