The cancellation angered Lopez, who complained in the Los Angeles Times that his comedy about a Latino family is being dumped in favor of cavemen.

"TV just became really, really white again," Lopez said.

Really, really white? I can think of plenty of shows that have minorties either starring, or being pretty important to the overall plot. I don't see how George Lopez's show, which was actually getting worse as it went on, being cancelled is a sign that tv just became really, really white. IMO, it's more that tv is getting really, really better now that we don't have to deal with a slowly failing comedy.

I'd like to hope Lopez was making a joke, but the paragraph before it states how angry Lopez was, so it seems to be a serious comment.

It just seems like a pretty stupid thing to say, imo... he almost makes it sound like he got cancelled BECAUSE he was a latino, not because of the ratings of his show. According to Jim is on the brink of getting cancelled too, so it's not like they JUST singled out George Lopez.

I wasn't really a George Lopez fan before, and now I'm even less of one.

Well, I rarely watch prime-time network television anymore, but can you name another show with a minority lead off the top of your head?

The Unit

The show was becoming sadder and sadder.
Way too many 'OMG we're Mexican!' jokes.

I could watch it, but I won't miss it.
Bring on the CAVEMEN! YES!!!!
Well, I rarely watch prime-time network television anymore, but can you name another show with a minority lead off the top of your head?
Not a lead, but E.R has two minorities off the top of my head that have pretty important parts... hell, Kovatch (sp?) might as well be a lead with the attention he gets (I'm just guessing on him though since I don't feel like looking it up to see if he's really of European descent), and there is that black doctor whose name I forget atm who is getting a lot of attention on the show.

Grey's Anatomy has three or four minorities in rather big parts. Again, it's hard designating a lead for a show like that, since they all get rather equal face time.

Hell, Scrubs has TWO minorties in lead roles!

So to say "TV has become really, really white again" is quite the stupid claim to make.

I don't watch Heroes, but isn't Hiro pretty important?

Uh oh... he got racist eh? Like Kramer! Now the Iron Sheik will be after him, I can see it now...
George Lopez, you are another no good $$$$$$ son of a bitch, worse than Michael Jackson. And one day you gonna meet the Iron Sheik, and I will fuck your ass and make you humble.
Ugly Betty has a Latina lead and is pretty damn popular.

George Lopez is an idiot.

I swear I don't get it. I ask this mostly because of the Italian background in my family...but..

My grandparents look almost identical to any quote unquote Hispanic man there is. They have dark tanned skin, dark hair, dark eyes, almost the same kind of features, and their language sounds almost identical to Spanish..

but they can get away with saying they're "white", you ask someone if Italians are white, and they'll say yes, you ask someone if Hispanics are white, and they'll say no.

It makes no sense to me. I do have one belief though..

People do whatever they can to set their own race back. If people like George Lopez and Carlos Mencia didn't exist, race relations would not be so fucked up. If there were no Chicano or Aztlan movements, there wouldn't be such racial tensions. And if citizens of Mexico didn't have an obsession for border hopping and illegal immigration, perhaps there wouldn't have to be fences or minutemen. That, and I'm downright sick of white people trying to be black. I don't care if you're aryan or caucasian or spanish, but if you're not black, please, stop trying to be black. I enjoy Japanese music and anime, and that doesn't mean I go around slanting my eyes, dressing in kimonos, and dying/treating my hair to make it look Asian.

The family sit-com is a stale medium right now. Lopez's show, According to Jim, How I met you mother are all really bad IMO. I don't think its because TV is "really white" but the fact that we have 150 channels and I personally don't choose to watch crappy TV because it is on a broadcast network.

You've got to have delusions of grandeur if you imagine yourself to be the sole entity that represents minorities in - according to your mind - a torrent of white only shows.

I wonder what his stance is on Spanish actors/actresses who look white. I imagine he's not really a fan.

I also remember reading, awhile ago, he punched out Carlos Mencia for misrepresenting Latino's.

I could be wrong, though.

FYI, Italians -- like the Irish -- only became "white" in the latter part of the twentieth century, and not even then depending on who you talk to. There's a famous scene in "True Romance" with that kind of thinking. Hell, there are still rural Welsh who call the English (who are technically descendants of the Normans) "Germans." Now THAT'S how you hold on to some racial emnity.

Southern Italian? If so, throughout history many many many cultures bred with the Italians. Africans (Carthage) and Muslims (Moors) come to mind. If you look hard enough, you can find Sicilians with red hair (I can in my family), thank Norway (I think) for that.

Also, recently read in the NY Times that Tuscans share a lot of genetic code with those in the Middle Eastern regions.

I'm pretty sure that did happen..

cause you know...Lopez is a pure blooded Aztec Indian God and the sight of anyone who looks remotely European angers his ancient volcano power.

Man, his wife on the show was the ultimate M.I.L.F. I'm bummed it's gone for that alone. I always caught the end before wrestling started.

No he punched him cause he (Ned) stole 11 minutes of his stand-up for a one hour special.

Actually, I was wrong, Lopez punched Mencia for stealing jokes.
The Unit
yeah but hes part of an ensemble that consists of another bunch of minoritiy types. alot of shows have minority characters but they dont tend to have important or relevant roles. ugly betty is a show mith a minority star but who do you think the show is really targeted towards. lopez's show was kinda of vanilla latino comedy that yeah did suck bigtime towards the end( i think the daughters departure hurt the shows chemistry) and in the end the show became a cliched clone of a once fresh show. they all do the same jokes, sayings and expressions so much so that the episodes bleed together without any direction or flare.

tv though more diverse in a way is still pretty vanilla in the way it represents minorities and in some way racist especially the streotypical blacks and other races are represented but eh thats mostly network tv if you want to see really great deep interesting representations of the ethnic experience you need cable especially hbo.

The only good thing about that Lopez show was the smokin' hot wife and daughter.

If either were on the screen, I'd watch until the end of the scene.

The Black Donnelys.

...How is "How I Met Your Mother" a family sitcom, exactly? :whistle2:s

I am Latino and get "I thought you were white" all of the time because of how I hold myself and the way I speak. I always look at them and say "I guess the dark skin color and dark hair/eyes threw you off." When I speak spanish, they say I have a white accent and that I am not fully Latino, kind of Latino lite, because of that. It really pisses me off. I don't have to act and talk like George Lopez to be proud of my culture and represent Mexicans in a good fashion.

I get that too.
I'm not Mexican though.

I'm half Costa Rican, half Peruvian.

I speak Spanish, but I do admit, I've got an American accent, ugh.

Can you please explain to me what the definition of being black is? I would really love to know. I wont make any assumptions so ill just leave it like that.

I will say this though, people who believe only a certain race should act a certain way, are the same people who create the segregation between races that help keep the stereotypes alive.

Ehh his quote is being taken the wrong way. If you've ever seen him do an interview just imagine how he said it and its obvious its a joke. I'm not a fan of his really but I've seen him around on talk shows and heard some of his material, he seems like a decent somewhat funny guy.
I still think we need more Indians with accents on TV! ;)
Which kind? Apu or John Redcorn?
Well, I rarely watch prime-time network television anymore, but can you name another show with a minority lead off the top of your head?
Nope.

I'll say this much...

The most successful minority show was The Cosby Show for a reason. They didn't bludgeon everyone over the head with the fact they were black. They had some episodes when it was appropriate to point it out, but it was always for a good reason and not for the sake of comedy.

I have to agree with George Lopez. There are adearth of leading roles for minorities in television. That doesn't mean things haven't ebbed and flowed. But when Jimmie Smits had to play an Italian on TV in NYPD Blues, you knew something was wrong.

The question isn't that there aren't minority characters in lead roles. I can think of a few. Everyone hates Chris. Ugly Betty. You've had Fresh Prince and Living Color. Anf of Course there are classics like Cosby.

But there is essentially a problem in television with having lead roles or certain shows with non-white characters. Jimmie Smits had to play an Italian on NYPD Blues. Friends was constantly parodied for it's lack of racial diversity in NY. In the 90's, the new WB and UPN was scathed by black comics for representing "We Be Black" and "You Pick a Nigger." But as soon as they built an audience they rushed to Buffy and Smallville and Everwood and Gilmore. And to deney that, or that there isn't that impact on television anymore, would be to ignore the issue.

Even today, I'm convince that on Heroes that Asian Time Shifting Guy is frankly the "Asian Time shifting guy." They they picked that character and developed him on frankly rascists lines. Why does the "Asian Guy" have to be a Japanese Foreigner. Why can't he just be a normal teen? But you rarely see Asians described like that on Television. Both the Asian MEdical Examiner oon CSI and the Asian Doctor (The hottie) from ER have complained publicly that they're constantly type-casted as doctors or scientists because they're Asian. It's not coincidence that the Asian (Though she appears more polynesian) computer ship from Andromeda found her next job as the Doctor in Stargate. Because Asians are "smart."

And one of the great actors of his generation, John Cho, you won't see him in a normal leading role. He's fantastic. I realized that in BLT. It's an amazing acting performance by him. On Par with early work by Ed Norton and Kevin Spacey. But because he was discovered in American Pie, his leading roles are in similar comedies and note that he's also a super smart and over achieving character in Harold and Kumar. But that's from a leading role perspective. He was fantastic when he guest starred on House. But even that started with him as the awkward asian (spilling apple juice on House) which is a serious stereotype of asian culture. But he performed in the role wonderfully. He does all his roles well.

And going back to Harold and Kumar, Kumar is the under-achieving son of the over-achieving Dr. Father. He's the terrorist in 24. He's the henchman in Superman Returns.

So to deny that there's racial stereotyping in television or Hollywood is absurd. Has it gotten better, probably. There are more channels and more outlets. Ultimately ratings matter. But is it still happening fairly commonly. Yes.

Sarausagi, I don't think it is people acting black as much as it is people acting hip-hop. It's kind of like what KRS-One said, rap is something you do, hip-hop is something you live.

Oh, and speaking of weird racial roles, why was an Albanian playing Goerge Lopez' daughter anyway?

Asians are even more screwed over on TV roles. If even by chance there is an Asian character, male roles are either as a nerdy, socially awkward stereotype or as book smart/techic type of character or as some master of martial arts. Female asian roles are typical narrowed to love interests for main characters (usually a white guy). With the exception of that awful Margaret Cho attempt at a sitcom, there has never been a primetime T.V. show with an Asian lead.

Actually, I'd put "Middle Easterner" on the bottom of that list. Every role is either predictably negative ("Terrorist or cabbie -- what's it gonna be?"), not actually filled by some Middle Easterner (Bad guy on "24"? Greek. Sayid on "Lost"? Indian.) or the character, while played by someone of middle eastern descent, isn't actually of that background himself (Tony Shaloub on "Monk").

Um Hiro isn't a "foreigner." He's a Japanese guy in NYC, he's not living there. He's there for the story at the end of the day he's still a Japanese person from Japan. Who worked at a desk job in Japan.

You seem like the type of person that would complain if there wasn't minorities on tv. Basically nothing would make you happy when it comes to race relations. "OMGZ why are all fat people in movies sloppy computer nerds, fat and stinky, or funny. OMGZ that's not fair to fat people" I'm fat I don't give a fuck. Its tv, and movies its supposed to be entertaining. Just watch the show laugh and shut up. Enjoy it for what it is don't make it about race. Bottom line you look a certain way your going to be type casted. Why stop at race, what about the old why are the typecasted as old people, why ugly people janitors. Why are "red heads a tough sale." OMGZ all of hollywood is racist.

Part of me wants to really tear apart your post, and part of me wants to merely tell you you're a fucking tool whose grip on the real world is loosened by a salve called "suburban white middle class," and leave it at that.

As far as "Mexicans not calling themselves white," more and more do, according to census data and survey projects polling strictly those of Latino origin. Besides, Italians were white in this country before the Irish were, so your basis of comparison is a piece of shit.
