Home remedies for fixing a disk...

PapiChullo

CAGiversary!
My copy of March Madness has a real tiny scratch in it, but I think it's messing up the game. I can play a game fine until the first foul is called, and then it freezes up. So I was wondering if there are any good methods that might get the scratch out, that isn't a game doctor (which I heard doesn't work that well). Any help is appreciated.

I tried with peanut butter, because I heard that works too, but it seems like it's just putting other little scuff marks on the cd. I guess I'll try the toothpaste thing, but trouble is gonna be finding some baking soda toothpaste around my dorm.

When I'd get to the first Piastol Battle in Skies of Arcadia Legends my disc would always freeze and the screen would flash the "Disc Read Error" I just used a wet tissue wiping from center to edge (not in circles) like the instruction booklet said then wiped with a dry tissue and voila! it worked and it hasn't happened since.

If that didnt link right check the "f'd up disk" thread on the gcn board
So which method did you use? Or did you just buy another?

See what happens when you use chunky peanut butter and not the smooth one...

How do you go about getting a disc resurfaced? You'll probably pay almost as much as you did to purchase the game in the beginning!

I have a few games that are buggin' out on me, but I'm afraid to try all these home remedies.

Toothpaste can work, and is something that I have used before. The reason it works is that its a mild abrasive. Same reason you use it on your teeth, it can be used to smooth out the scratch so that it may read effectively again. It can also be used on Jewelery/Glass, etc.

You could all NOT be stupid and just get the damn thing resurfaced.
** edited as I didnt read further.

Ok Disc resurfacing should be done at a local second hand cd or game store. As they get scratched stuff in. I would guess its pretty cheap and personally iw ould just make the trip to one and "happen" to have the cd with you it might be free.

The other option I have heard of is Pledge. I heard this from multiple people and I myself havent needed to try it. The guy that told me was a clumsly looking fellow so I imagined he had indeed tried it out.

Wipe from the center to the outside and not around the cd.

Also if you dont want to risk it then.

I am sure you some old muisc cd sitting around try to replicate the scratch same depth length etc on this old music cd adn see if any of these home remedies work on it then try that one on your game?

I didnt use any of them.
The toothpaste sounds like the best legitimate option.
In case it doesnt state it in that thread, you have to use old school type toothpaste, actual paste not the gel stuff.

Also, has anybody seen the commercial, for that stuff for fixing scratched eyeglasses? It seems like it would work for disks too, even with significant scratches.

Use 000 grade steel wool. it will put very fine scratches in the disk exactly like a disk doctor, but finer. If the scratch is too deep and tangential, you're screwed anyway and need to resurface. Perpendicular scratches arent as much of a detriment, thats why they tell you to always wipe from the center hub outward.

If nothing else works there's always the boiling pot of water or the microwave fix...... 3 minutes on HIGH setting should really take care of your disk completely!

Reminds me of the time OPM sarcasticly suggested putting a Playstation disc in the microwave to clean it. Then ppl actually tried it, mailed them, and complained. Classic.

 I tried that and my cd melted.

My friend runs a disc around his carpet which is a bit rough. then he uses a denim pad on it. then a softer denim pad on it and that usually buffs out scratches. I guess its like using a disc doctor.

I was joking if you didn't notice all of the sarcasm dripping from my post.

i heard that you're supposed to ride on top of it with a pretty big sized vehicle and just peel wheels for about 30 seconds, then put mayo on top of it and stick it in the microwave

no .. if u really wanna get the scratches out, u gotta swipe in down the asscrack of a dead mule... everybody knows this. and dont say it doesnt work, cause u know u havent tried it yet

Peanut butter will only make it worse! I have heard that Toothpaste works although I have never tried it before. The only thing I would consider is the game doctor.....

At least I can put my toothpaste to good use now.

Haha jk. It really does work though. Thanks to previous posters.
