is there any way to search for someones gamer tag? I ran into a friend i hadn't seen in years the other day at gamestop. He gave me his gamer tag and told me to hit him up. I tried entering it this weekend but its not working, i think i wrote it down wrong

what i thought I wrote was:

WolfNAmanger

'wolf in a manger' basically. I tried a few different variants but no dice. I found a search tool online but you seem to need the exact gamer tag. Isn't there a way to do a partial search, or bring up everything that begins with wolf? Or am i just boned?

He jotted down his phone number on the back of my reciept, which i lost when i returned the games i had bought there >_< I had jotted down the gamertag myself on another scrap of paper. So thats all i have to contact him with right now

The question still stands though: how do you search for a gamertag if you dont have the complete one? Theres gotta be a way. Seems odd that I cant find a way to do it

It's not odd, since there isn't one.

On trueachievements.com if you enter a partial gamertag in the search field it will retrieve all the gamertags that include your search string. Then you can wade through the tags and link directly to their xbox.com profile and message them.

I believe it has all the gamertags in their database, but I don't know of any other way to search for gamertags unless you have the exact tag.

That only works if his friend is also a member of TA. Otherwise, it won't pop up.

Yea, it might not have all the gamertags on earth in the database, but it does have people listed that say they are not registered for the site so who knows what you might find.

It is probably a long shot if his friend has signed up for TA, but probably worth a try. I don't know of any other way to search for a GT unless you have the full tag. Does Raptr let you search on gamer tag? 360voice might be another option.

hmm i seriously doubt he signed up for TA, but i'll give that a shot. That is VERY stupid that you cant do a partial gamertag search. WHy the hell would they make it so hard to find your friends?

I dont think he has a facebook page. I just searched and i cant find him on there. Everyone with the same name is not him. Blea this sucks =( So other than TA which probalby wont work, there is no way whatsoever to find someone based on their gamertag? He was buying dead Island, so if there was a way to look it up through that that would work, but i dont think they have a leaderboard or anything like that

One thing that wasn't mentioned, was, maybe he's a halo player? In that case, he might be registered on bungie.net. Partial searches seem hit or miss, but it's an option at least.

hmm no dice on TA. tried several different variations but couldnt' find him. Tried bungie.net but its partial search doesn't work well at all.. no go =( Thanks for the suggestions guys but it looks like i just may not be able to find him. I really think its lame that Xbox doesn't just let you do partial gamertag searches.

There is good reason for it. To deter spam and hacking accounts.

If he played Halo you can do something similar as mentioned earlier just type ''WOLF'' in gamertag search and it'll include every gamertag with wolf
