How to bypass PSN block?

I just recently got to college and I can't hook up my PS3 to the network. The PC works fine, but the PS3 gives an error message.. "The attempt to obtan an IP address timed out."

I talked to a bunch of people.. Some said the college blocks it to keep people studying or some bullshit lol.. Some people told me to buy a USB wireless adapter type thing, and some told me if i buy a router it will work.. Not sure what I need or how to set it up or if its even possible.. And that's where the CAG community comes in handy. I'd like to be sure if I'm going to spend the money on this stuff that it's going to work, so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks!

Also, there is a "Guest" network which apparently doesnt work for many people and apparently is/will be shut off (works fine for me for some reason), then there is the official wifi we're supposed to use, but the PS3 doesn't recognize it (needs a password). Not sure if this messes things up as well but I thought i'd point it out for anyone who is good with this kind of stuff

You can run your PS3 through your PC internet connection I believe. Can't remember the exact name but I'm sure someone will post a link.

Someone also mentioned port forwarding or something.. This is what I came to the CAG community for haha. I don't mind spending the money on something if it's goign to work, my laptop and ps3 aren't very close to each other so a wireless router or adapter would be preferred.. But for now that will work. Can't I go into network settins on my laptop and click "share this connection" or something like that? I've done it before a long tim ago but not with Windows 7. I'll look into that though, thanks.

connect ps3 to pc ethernet port, enable Internet Connect Sharing in windows on connection that has internet, ps3 can then use pc internet connection

its internet connection sharing i do it for my ps3 its easy to set up but your laptop or pc needs to have an ethernet port to do it as well as be able to do ics.

Still not working, it says I need to select a private network connection.. My choices are Wireless Network 2 and Local Area Connection.. neither of which work :(

Back in 2003-04 I played Halo 2 online on campus (dorms) all the time. I guess your school is a bitch. Can't help you man... get an IT major dude to help.

My PC had issues also connecting to the internet back when I was in college but an IT geek was able to get me up and running. Try to find someone like that.

You can't bypass your school network proxy block for PSN, unless of course you know their admin password. You're out of luck if your school doesn't grant access to that even if you share connection with your PC. Nothing you can do unless you can sign up for those 4g mobile internet for your laptop/pc and then bridge it.

Are you connecting to the internet only through wireless? If so then just write down your PS3's mac address and go to the IT center at your college. Tell them what your problem is and they should be able to help you out. Most likely the school's network is just blocking your PS3 from the internet so if you give them your PS3's mac address they can allow internet access for your PS3.

If you have the option for ethernet just buy a router. If you connect your own router up to the school's network you can create your own little network for yourself through the router and bypass all password restrictions.

They could be blocking the PSN network ports, which makes everything suggested a moot point. Obviously 80 and 443 will get through, but who knows about the others. Get in touch with someone external to the school and have them open up the ports on their router and see if you can telnet to those ports.

This was an old PSN port list I had, but I assume still somewhat accurate.

  • TCP:
    • 80
    • 443
    • 5223
  • UDP:
    • 3478
    • 3479
    • 3658 (voice chat)

I think this hits it right on the head. The problem is that the university is probably not using DHCP. Thus, they are only giving you one IP address, so if your computer is logging onto the campus network, then the PS3 is unable to get its own IP. If you pick up a router (it can be a cheap one without wireless), it will take the IP assigned by the school and then you can hook up as many things as you want on your end.

The "hooking up through a computer" method mentioned earlier works similar, but will require your computer to have two NICs, one to receive the connection from the school and then one to pass on the connection to the PS3 on the other connection.

All we have is wireless, so I don't think I can do the router.. or can I? and as far as the rooting suggestion, I have one, but is the quality crappy? like am I going to be lagging out of games or what? that's really the only reason I haven't used it yet because I figured it wasnt even worth the time / effort

dont you need a crossover cable to hook up a ps3 to your computer?

i haven't tried this, but you should be able to connect your ps3 to your online enabled pc using a crossover cable and share youre internet connection from your pc.
i imagine you have one of those campus internet connection where you have to open a browser and you go to a login page and log in from there right?

One of the head guys here said it will work if you get a wireless router and make your own connection which makes sense, but how do you get the router to recognize the existing wifi?

I use Privoxy to create a proxy through my PC. You need a router or a switch, set up the wired network between PS3 and PC but I'm not sure how sharing a wireless connection works though. I do know I purposely use my PC as a proxy but I'm completely hardwired.

The best thing would be to first call and ask the university's tech support. I highly doubt a university would flat out block out consoles... I'm guessing it's more likely that it's only get one IP per student.

They would probably be able to give you a work around. I highly doubt there's a university out there these days that would prevent students from using gaming consoles online... unless it's a religious school or a really shitty school.

EDIT* Saw that you already did that but I don't think it's possible for a router to use a wi-fi connection.

EDIT 2* This might be what you need to do... you'll need to turn a router into a wireless bridge.

I worked in a campus IT dept. Our security system blocked EVERY wired device connected to the network (PCs, Routers, PS3, 360s, etc). There was a quick process by which you open up an internet browser and run a quick test, thereby adding your MAC address to the network. Once you pass the test, your system can connect.

There was a separate process for routers/game consoles/etc (non-PCs) by which you had to record the MAC address of your system and submit it to the IT dept for it to work (because NO internet browser on 360).

Perhaps your network is similar?

Update.. The router I have doesn't support the wireless bridge thing.. Is there a way I can plug the router to my laptop (which has the connection) then my PS3 into the router, or have the router give off a wireless signal to the PS3 from the laptops connection?
