How do you guys study for math? I finished all my review sheets but i am having trouble finding past midterms to practice with. I take Math B first year.
I never read the text, seriously. I go straight to the problems, and if I don't know how to do something or I get something wrong, then go back and read a bit about that part.
Do problems that have solutions, try them first and read later.
At least, that's what works best for me. I only learn by doing, not reading.
Read the book to see the theory behind what you are doing. Do the examples so you can see how to solve the problems correctly. Then do the problems over and over again until you can do it with ease. Study in a group if you still are not getting it.
I am taking my college Algebra class online and Im only two weeks in, but we have a tool that we pay for called campus compass I believe. We do homework and we can get tips on how to solve it and see examples of problems just like the one we are trying to solve. Its pretty handy and If I just do a bunch of those over and over it cuts down on the use of paper (if your going green) and it helps me remeber the way to solve the problems.
My problem with math was that there never seemed to be enough examples. There was always one problem that made no sense or had no easy solution, even after looking at examples and the text.
Well the midterm is tomorrow. Honestly, i am just going to wing it ill try to do as much with my calculator, and ill reread my review packet tomorrow morning before the test.
I skip lecture and just do all of the homework on my own. I don't read the book. But if I'm starting something new I am unfamiliar with, I look for an example problem in the beginning of the section similar to the first one in the sub-section I am working on. I follow the steps for that example, then go to my problem and try to work it on my own. I then check the solutions manual to see if I got it right. If I got it wrong (rarely), I figure out what went wrong and then I do the rest of the assigned similar problems without a hitch.
Then when I need to study for an exam, I do the sample tests at the end of the chapters as review. Then I take a little break (30-60 min). I then review any formulas I may be foggy on still or any rules I will need to know and then go into the testing center.
Sometimes something good is to go through the sections in the chapter(s) you are going to be tested on and type up a list of all rules and formulas that the test material will go over. Then print it out and use it for a "cheat sheet" as you do your homework and practice problems. Before long, you will be remembering the techniques required and won't need the cheat sheet anymore.
