Interesting D3 review: good read - even if you disagree

I thought it was brill. I'd like to see more game journalism spread out and try these types of writing. There's another piece I've got bookmakered at home about Jedi Knight that I'll post later.

Trevor's an obnoxious assmaster. Though I wish I could get excited about games like that.

And for the record, I disagree with it, not to mention the damn spoilers littered.

As far as writing is concerned, it bored me.

Pretty interesting review. So dude's saying Painkiller is really good I guess? Maybe I should check it out. As a side note, anybody else think XIII deserved much better than the scores it got?

it's good to see an honest review, especially about a highly anticipated game that everyone says is gonna be revolutionary (cough chough grand theft auto cough)...sorry...had something in my throat...

i wasn't that interested, but the review caught my attention because it's exactly how i've felt about the last few games i've picked up...which inspired me to join this site once i found it (because i felt stupid for paying 50 bucks at walmart for psi ops and not getting mk for free).

let's face it...the videogame industry needs some new blood...how many games have you put down after playing only a week and never wanted to pick them up again? spiderman 2 and psi ops are just a couple games in my collection starting to collect dust...games are sucking big time cause it's all about graphics...pretty game with a little humor and some cool moves and i'll shell out 50 bucks...whatever...best game i've bought this year...beyond good and evil for 20 bucks...i would have paid triple that because i cared about the story and characters and even though i beat it within a week (including working fulltime, so it could have been a long weekend), i still wanted to pick it up and play it again from the beginning...hell...i told my friend he had to play it and i had fun watching him play

i just hope the upcoming games...halo 2, fable, half-life 2 (cause i'm getting a free copy thanks to my radeon) are worth playing and have real replay value...not just some unlock a new costume crap

didn't mean to go off on a rant, but the review was right...we're just a dumb flock of sheep buying what they tell us is gonna be cool and kissing their asses cause they made it look so pretty

Trevor seems like he's older than 21 but acts like he's 8. If that was my friend I'd beat some sense into the moron. I mean you can be hyped aboput a game but who in their right mind thinks absolutely everyone in the free world comes to get the game 6 hours early...What a tool.

my thoughts exactly :D

in addition, the only game im hyped for right now (but not nearly as much as trevor was) is burnout 3!! :D

Here's that other review I was talking about:

I'm curious to hear people's thoughts about it as well. I think this piece and the Doom piece linked above are a nice trend in nu-video game journalism.

As for Trevor, I sort of got the impression from reading a couple of columns that he's the author's version of Tyler Durden, if you know what I mean. Especially considering this:

Good read.

That's a great review. Seems more genuine than any other website's reviews I've ever read.

BTW, www.insertcredit.com uses these types of reviews a lot. Those haven't ever grabbed me, but that's mostly because they aren't games I'm interested in.

Nice find OP...

Finshed reading it. It's a good read.
I don't think I'm going to read BigHow's link since I've read way too much.

Liked the review, better than anytrhing I've ever seen in the likes of Gameinformer where they just try to throw any buzz word they can find into writings. Reading through that really does bring me back to some games that I was all anxious about, but the hype was too high and in the end I was left with nothing but shattered dreams and a game that I stopped play an hour in. Its persuaded me to keep away from Doom 3 for a while.

I saw "Max Payne 2 is better than Doom 3" and then I realized this was a joke or written by someone with severe head trauma.

I'm so tired of the 'jaded and cynical' slant that's so chic these days.

good post. everytime new blood comes out in the game industry, no one cares, they go for the old rehashed over hyped garbage games.

thers a few exceptions in similiar genres of course (espn better or equal to madden, yet madden will always crush espn sales because of fanboysim and people loving rehases).

Some Examples of games that gripped me all the way threw lately that not many people gave a chance too:

Beyond Good and Evil.
X Files Resist or serve.
Breath of fire dragon quarter (i list this because it doesnt seem all too popular, from what i can see)
Robot Alchemic Drive
and the best of the bunch in my opinion, BREAKDOWN, great story, great fighting engine, difficult, and it kept me hooked threw the hard parts of the game to want to play to know what happens next. true the gunplay could of been better, but its a first person fighter, and for trying something new, i dont degrade namco for this.

now on the other hand, i bought spiderman 2 a few days before it came out, and i found it to be quite boring. it felt shallow, bland, unimaginative. true its open and you can go anywhere crap that games are becoming, but i got tired quickly doing those hero missions as the same 5 missions repeated. the game was incredibly short and i felt ripped off for the 30 dollars i spent on (thanks target rainchecks)!

so the lesson? hype = garbage. (even tho i wasnt hyped for spiderman 2...i liked the first one and the playstation games and my favorite of all, maximum carnage)

The review could be summed up in one sentence:

Don't believe the hype, Doom 3 is doom 1 with better graphics.

What I love was the overtly faciteous nature of belittling fanbois of all persuasions for their tenacity even in the face of truth. Star Wars sucks, and so do most all other overhyped and overpromoted things. It just takes a while for the truth to set in, then they're off to drool over the next big geeky trend. It's really kinda sickening, but I guess that's what drives our economy, or at least what keeps us awash in new re-hashes of entertainment and games.
As a side note, anybody else think XIII deserved much better than the scores it got?
On the console my answer is a resounding "Nope." I almost loved XIII, until I got to the stupid boss fights -- traditional video game bosses with super high levels of health doesn't belong in a game that is aiming for a certain level of realism. They could have accomplished the whole thing with better boss AI, keeping the boss's heavy weapons (except for the stupid syringe), giving them realistic body armor, and maybe putting you in a position where most of your ammo was lost or used-up by the time you had the boss face-off. The boss that appears in the jungle camp was the worst, as he just ran circles around the building and did nothing else -- all you had to do was crouch behind an object, let him swing and shoot, and then jump up and fire, then remix until he was dead -- that was no boss challenge.

The console multiplayer is dreadful as well.

The PC version is a different matter though... real online multiplayer along with map customization, and of course a mouse for aiming -- a much better experience.

That being said, I will always have a soft spot for the console single player, but they could have done a much better job.

they did a great job on XIII, i never thought if it as being realistic at all. I always thought of it as a comic book just like the presentation showed it as being. as for the boss fights, i enjoyed them alot. its always good to have change ups in the game play to furthur enjoy a game expierence.

so the lesson? hype = garbage.

I couldn't agree more. You will be surprised how many D3 reviews out there start out with something like "believe the hype" - a phrase which automatically tells me that the reviewer is not being objective at all and has been bitten by the hype bug.

The truth is you shouldn't open your mouth about a game until your excitement, rush, hype dies down and you come back to your senses.

And during the hype period, after a game is released, the negative views of a game are usually the more level headed ones. That is why I always read the bad reviews first because I know they haven't been sucked up by the hype.
I just saved $54. Thank you Tom Chick! WE'RE STREAKING !!!!
Cool. You read one review where the guy who's point they're focusing on is clearly a jackass geared toward every major hyped release ("Going to be this excited about Half Life 2?" - " fuck Half Life 2". --- later "I can't wait for Half Life 2".

You take your opinions from bipolar-hype devouring monkeys? Good deal.

yeah...the bar of soap ws a give away to his attempted style...i liked the underlying message of the review, and the rejection of videogame hype mirrored the rejection of commercialism in fight club, but if you ever read fight club you know that he failed to capture th style accurately...it was missing the flow and personality...but i give the author credit for trying something different...also i highly recommend that anyone here who has not read the book go and pick up a copy of fight club today and put down the controllers for a couple of days...you won't need long to read it because it sucks you in and won't let you put it down

I loved the style of the review. I must say I laughed my ass off with all the real-life references to Trevor. i.e. Maintaining that the girl was flirting with them, etc.

I do I have to take exception to the attitude of the review. You can't really classify it as a review. It fits more into editorial. (Why I think it sucks). He does try to balance it out with Trevors enthusiasm, however, the way he depicts Trevor completely undermines his credibility.

DOOM3 is "derivative"? Hmmm.... Ok. Let's think back on this:

DOOM --> A horde of "demonic" creatures is unleashed from another dimension, (hell) after experiments go wrong on "Mars", in a top secret lab. The hordes are making their way to Earth to destroy/take over. One man must save the Earth.

Half-Life --> A horde of "alien" creatures is unleashed after experiments go wrong on "Earth" in a top secret lab. They are already on Earth and are seeking to take over/destroy and the government is trying to suppress the incident. One man must save the Earth.

If I recall correctly, DOOM3 is a retelling of the original story that inspired a host of FPS-style games. Let's not get started on how "derivative" FPS games are. Guns, enemies, shoot to kill. Gee... sounds like that's his real problem with the game.

So, I say to him: "Go play Mario Golf, yet realize what you really are looking for in a game. I played the original DOOM and DOOM2 not so much to play the single player, but to fit in with a group of buddies playing Co-Op and Deathmatch. It's the interaction you have with friends because of a game that makes it great. I wonder why most new games have gone in that direction....

Case in point: You offer your friend a 6 stroike handicap because you know you will beat him, yet you pick apart his enjoyment of a game you apparently have no interest in.

DOOM3 isn't just about the story; it's about the challenge. How well can you do, how far can you go, and how badly will you whoop up on all of your friends. Will you be the goat? Will you be the superstar? Or will you just fall someplace inbetween and feel good enough about yourself to think 'Hey, at least I'm not THAT guy!'".

Back to my reality.

I can't even begin to describe how many hours of DOOM2 I played over a local BBS with 4 player action. Custom maps made by people in MY community. Budman, Ffej, and myself. Full on deathmatch with DB shotties, rocket launchers, and the vaunted BFG. For those of us who played the original and lived it when it was the best you could get, of course a re-work is going to leave a taint and be subject to the most excruciating scrutiny. That was the way I lived. Log in and tune out.

From what I've read, he may have played the game, but he certainly didn't understand it.

RealmD

Anyone else see this at the end:
"Yeah, let's do it. I call Princess Peach. Well, I think I've learned my lesson. I just wish Half-Life 2 would hurry up and come out."

Sounds like somebody falling back into his old ways.

RealmD: I think his problems with the game are that while it may be a fantastic game (which is probably isn't, but that's not the point), I got the sense that his frustrations were with the fact that such a hyped game and such a beautiful game really didn't do anything new or great in terms of FPSes. I kind of feel with him, as the last FPS I bought (UT2K4) really didn't do much except put a pretty game on my monitor. It's a good game, but I've played the game countless times before in other games. Maybe I'm more frustrated with a lack of creativity, maybe I'm just bored with games, but something isn't right...

I skimmed through the review... if you can call it that, and was wondering what the hell the guy was smoking when he wrote it.

Firingsquad's review seemed to say the same things pretty much without ranting.

DOOM 3 can only get better. Things like co-op play, more than 4 people in a game, using flashlight and being able to fire pistol, etc. etc.

If I wasn't broke and didn't need a stick of RAM I would buy it. Instead I am just going to borrow it from a friend
