After buying a fake China ipod touch off of ebay (not knowingly), I turned to Craigslist to buy a used one (as a last resort). I found an 8 gig Ipod Touch that comes with only the usb cable and the Ipod Touch but no box, manuals, or warranty. How do I verify that it's the real deal instead of some clone? I can't exactly check the serial number and most clones almost perfectly resemble the apple counterparts.
Is there some way to tell that it's real/fake or should I just pass if there is no definite way of knowing?

Well I guess if I meet them at their house and ask them to connect it to Itunes for me it could work. Otherwise if I meet i public is there anyway to verify without connecting to a computer?

Since you're still worried and the best actual advice you've been given is "dur connect it to da iTunes", here's what you watch for:

a.) Check for a serial number. If there is none, it's stolen plain and simple.

b.) Check that the serial number makes some sort of sense. Anything like a repeated number or something ridiculously simple is probably indicative of a clone.

c.) Check that there's no battery cover. Apple loves to fiscally rape its customers so they don't allow you to change your battery on your own easily.

d.) Since it's touchscreen, there should only be that one button near the bottom of the screen.

Just about every fake i've seen of the iphone has extra buttons and no logo, it really is pretty easy to tell if you've seen the real thing

The fake I received did remotely resemble an Ipod Touch but was able to tell that it was fake. However it had the logo and serial number on the back of the Touch, although poorly printed in a faded white ink similar to the one that Apple uses. The serial number was not legit when I checked for warranty status on the apple site but did look like a real serial number.
Combined with a model that may look like an Ipod touch, I think it would be hard for me to tell without the actual box, manuals, and/or receipt for it.

I think I may just go ahead and buy the real thing sealed instead of trying to save a little bit of money since used goes for only $50 less than a new one. That way I still have warranty and a genuine Ipod.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
