Comic Clobbers Comic In L.a.

July 17, 2007 -- IT was fight night at an L.A. comedy club last week when Jon Lovitz roughed up Andy Dick over the murder of their "Saturday Night Live" colleague, Phil Hartman.

Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, who witnessed the assault, said, "Jon picked Andy up by the head and smashed him into the bar four or five times, and blood started pouring out of his nose." Lovitz told Page Six, "All the comedians are glad I did it because this guy is a [bleep]hole."

Lovitz and Dick have been at loggerheads since a 1997 Christmas party at Hartman's house, five months before his troubled wife Brynn flipped out, fatally shooting Hartman, then killing herself. "Andy was doing cocaine, and he gave Brynn some after she had been sober for 10 years. Phil was furious about it - and then five months later he's dead," said Lovitz, adding that when he filled in on Hartman's "Newsradio" sitcom, "I told Andy, 'I wouldn't be here now if you hadn't given Brynn that cocaine.' "

Last year, Lovitz related, a drunken Dick strolled up to his table at Ago in West Hollywood, rudely downed his guests' peach liqueur drinks, and "looked at me and said, 'I put the "Phil Hartman hex" on you - you're the next one to die.' I said, 'What did you say?' and he repeated it. I wanted to punch his face in, but I don't hit women."

When the two ran into each other at the Laugh Factory last Wednesday, "I wanted him to say he was sorry for the 'Phil Hartman hex,' " Lovitz told us. "First he says, 'I don't remember saying that.' Then he leans in and says, 'You know why I said it? Because you said I killed Phil Hartman.' Which I never said. Then he asked me to be in his new movie.

"I grabbed him by the shirt and leaned him over and said, 'I don't want to be in your movie! I don't want to be in your life!' I pushed him against the rail. Then I pushed him again really hard. A security guard broke it up. I'm not proud of it . . . but he's a disgusting human being." Dick's rep said he had no comment.

Dick's weirdness has been well documented. Last year, he licked the faces of Farrah Fawcett, Carrie Fisher and Patton Oswalt, then groped and bit the hand of Post reporter Mandy Stadtmiller at a comedy-festival taping.

Andy Dick is one of those people who, just like Sarah Silverman (shut up, you only like her because she's mildly attractive), have no sense of humor in their bodies, and merely are considered "entertaining" as a result of their willingness to offend everybody. Andy Dick rightly deserved what he got, and being beat up by a fat, post-middle-age comedian is pretty pitiful.

Jon Lovitz, on the other hand, is awesome. Fat and old, but awesome.

It's obvious the writer absolutely loves talking about Andy while only using his last name as an identifier.

A drunk Dick stolled up indeed.

I too champion more beatings by the Critic.

This is the New York Post, of course.

fuck Andy Dick. I never knew that about him supposedly being the undoing of Phil Hartman. Hartman was such a great character actor, and Dick...well is just a dick. I applaud Jon Lovitz. Go Jay Sherman!

"Hotchie motchie! On the Shermometer, Andy Dick rates a 0, Brrrrrrrrrrr."

I haven't seen enough of Andy Dick's work to have him register in my mind as being a famous person.

But hey...if everything in that article if true, he deserved to get his ass beat. Paticularly when he said "I'll put a Phill Hartman hex on you...". Thats messed up.

So it wasn't just ACTING!?

"All the comedians are glad I did it because this guy is a [bleep]hole."

I can hear him saying that.

Nice I can't stand Andy Dick. Major bonus points for it being Jon lovitz that kicked his ass. Andy Dick should be dead not Phil.

RIP in Phil Hartman

Fantastic.

I really don't know what else to say. Andy Dick isn't funny and doesn't deserve anything good he gets for his "comedy"

Sounds more like he got his ass handed to him than just beat up.

A lot of stuff happened at the laugh factory in the past year hasn't it?

That's great...my brother almost beat up Andy Dick once. In the clubs down in Miami he was always trying to bum coke/money for coke from anyone he'd see, routinely annoying someone important and getting kicked out in the process. He eventually got himself banned from at least one club (where my brother was working the door) and caused a scene when my brother wouldn't let him in. Andy got all up in his face and was about to catch a beatdown when his friends pulled him away and left. Too bad he didn't get to, but Lovitz doing it is even better.
Apparently someone got in and took some video with a camera phone and put it on youtube:

Now that's messed up. Lovitz put it on him.
Awwww, man! That's wack.

I wish I could have been there in person. That MTV show that Andy Dick had a while was pretty amusing. It was a reality show where he was trying to pick his next assistant. He was funny in "Old School", too. Other than that, he's just an annoying ass.
and very true about sarah silverman.. cuz would anybody give a crap if she was fat and ugly ?
Well, Margret Cho had a career for a while...
Perhaps he snorted the line?
:D

I admit I can see why people think he's annoying.

To be clear, I think this crosses the line but is Jon Lovitz really a winner for getting that upset about something that was said by a coked-up C-List comedian?

I just know that he's about the most entertaining thing on late-night tv, no other guest is going to lick the host's hand or bite the shoulder of a celeb unless they are on a leash or in a cage.

Sarah Silverman has many great jokes, and great delivery of those jokes. I'm not a fanboy-type fan, but she knows from funny, and it's not just shockarooni stuff.

I agree with you 100% on Dick, Lovitz, and Silverman...thats the ticket.

Jon Lovitz rules...anybody remember the cartoon "The Critic"? I got the series on DVD when it came out - that was comedic genius.

everybody from my university loves Jon Lovitz coz he is alumni!

this news will be all over the school newspaper!

Jon Lovitz is awesome and underrated. I didn't have anything against Andy Dick but I didn't realize the relationship between him and Hartman's death. Jon Lovitz could hit any person and I'd probably take his side. Hell, when I had a myspace, Jon Lovitz was the first person on my friends list.

In the end...

Jon Lovitz = Cool
Andy Dick = Bitch
Jon Lovitz hitting Andy Dick = Totally fucking awesome!

P.S. Jon Lovitz looks remarkably like my father.

Newsradio is quite possibly my favorite sitcom of all time, and I thought Andy was really good on the show. Clearly, his performance was something of a fluke because he's not really capable of much else...just makes me think most of his character was on the page and not conceived by him.

Sarah Silverman's movie "Jesus is Magic" is freakin' hysterical, hot or not. Hot helps, of course. See it if you doubt her comedic prowess.

I can't stand Andy Dick. On the other hand, I love Jon Lovitz. I was just watching Benchwarmers the other day and thought he was great in it.
"eat fresh !!"

andy dick should have got worse.

and very true about sarah silverman.. cuz would anybody give a crap if she was fat and ugly ?
Genius. Err, I mean "It stinks!"
Lisa Lampanelli.
She sucks too. "Jesus is Magic" is garbage as well. Both of them, just like Dick, are *incapable* of making a single joke that doesn't offend someone or make a victim out of someone. Now, many great comedians were offensive (Richard Pryor, George Carlin come to mind - and of course Lenny Bruce), but not exclusively so. What Silverman, Lampanelli, and others call "comedy" is just them being an asshole at someone else's expense. When you laugh at their jokes, you're laughing at their victim.

What exactly is so funny about Silverman not being able to get to the store because there is a wheelchair race on a sidestreet (a segment of her TV show I caught)? Because there's a wheelchair race? Hardy har. If you just make it "a race," then it becomes quite obvious that it isn't funny at all until you add the element of victimization and offense. The same goes for her movie - singing a folksy tune about how old people are all going to die is supposed to be funny - but if you merely remove the "elderly" part of it, it is no longer funny and, frankly, rather mundane.

If you don't believe me, take out the racial/ethnic/sexual/ageist victim in one of her jokes and see if it remains funny. I'm willing to bet that you aren't able to find one. So-called comedians like that are just multi-faceted Carlos Mencias (who just seems to enjoy picking on "beaners").
