Can't decide if I want to bother trying to get one at launch. The games look great, but the price is really putting me off. Maybe I'll just wait for a price drop (if this does bad like the 3DS and Wii U) or the inevitable special edition/OLED model. Since the GBA, I've gotten every Nintendo system at launch; it would be weird to break that tradition.

I have strong opinions on this one. Always wanted a switch. Hated the cheap plastic body in the beginning. Then the joycon drift early on. After a few years the rumors started on OLED. Then rumors of a switch pro. I kept waiting and waiting.

Now here we are with switch 2. All the online news is saying it’s a huge flop, too expensive, new memory cards, overpriced 20 year old games, no OLED. Yet the hype train makes it seem like preorders went wild. I can’t tell if it’s legit excitement or just people trying to scalp to make an extra $10 in this economy.

The fact is a switch 2, an extra controller, and a game is nearly $700. Zero interest in my book. Let it fail, at least I hope it does.

Best buy seriously screwed up big time with waiting in line. Then it crashes and goes back in line continue to wait then it doesn't get added to cart and goes back to line and gets the sold out message.
That’s why I didn’t want to wait any longer than I did with Best Buy. I absolutely knew there’d be some glitch and I would have stayed up for nothing.

I’m also a little pissed they didn’t do anything for MyBest Buy Plus whether it was being able to bump the line, or an exclusive 30 min window to purchase, anything. Instead I’m reminded of how that subscription after the initial buy 2 get 1 with Switch games was just money thrown down a hole. I’ll definitely be cancelling this time around.

Edit-haha, apparently I’m still “in line” with Walmart…

Worst console launch experience ever? I got one from Target on that last little restock alert about 1 and a half hours later, but thought I totally missed it. The lines did nothing. I think shadow dropping pre-orders is better. Normal consumers just don’t stand a chance against bots anymore, when they are prepped and ready. It seemed like PS5, if you got lucky, you had at least a few minutes while the botters dusted dewritos off their hands.

I got one at Walmart last night, but I'd much rather find it at Best Buy. They currently have a free $20 for every $150 spent on Nintendo things($100 total). 2 Zelda titles and the "should have been free" game put me at $149 towards my first $20.

I liked the year that Xbox One and PS4 went up for sale right after their E3 presentation. Was super easy to order. Everything since has been 15 minutes of refreshing, re-adding, and praying the sale goes through this time.

Just wanted to say that it’s pretty cool to be part of another console launch 20+ years after CAG’s founding.

Thanks for sharing your stories and for your support!
I guess the last time I pre-ordered a new console was the original Wii back in 2006. It was easier than this: I just went to Gamestop and said I'd like a Wii and that was all.

Agreed! Been here right from the start. Only oddity now is I don’t have excitement for new launches anymore, as I expect anything launch to be in ‘beta‘ status, and now wait a year for a limited edition console that is fixed from quality issues. See switch 1 launch issues…

I managed to get a preorder in at Target last night. Walmart flagged my order as fraudulent and I had to contact my bank. Best Buy sold out while I was in line for an hour. I'm going to try to secure a preorder at Gamestop when I go to pickup Expedition 33 when they open since I don't trust Target not to randomly cancel.

I would say the process went similar to how preordering the PS5 was back in 2020. Just endless clicking and refreshing each step of the way due to servers timing out. I consider myself lucky to have secured it even though it did take an hour. I imagine in the old days it would have been a similar wait standing in a queue physically. I wish these companies could somehow organize this process better but it is what it is. Thankfully, I was able to get mine at Target with a backup ordered at Best Buy for my nephews if it comes through. Walmart was endless errors trying to click the preorder button. I don't understand how some were able to have success at Walmart but I guess it's a YMMV situation.

Interestingly, at Target I was able to get it added to my cart and get to the checkout phase using the app but it would not process the order. I had selected PayPal since that would save me time from having to type in my mailing address. I got the idea to login to Target on my PC and the website was the only way I could see that error message indicating "Paypal is unavailable". I quickly changed payment method to credit card and the order went through smoothly except for a delay in receiving the confirmation email.

I expected Bestbuy would be the best experience heading into all this from past experience with console launches and never imagined Target would actually end up being the first retailer to successfully process my order.

I was able to order from Gamestop. I had no luck last night though I probably could have if I tried Walmart, I just didn't. Best Buy kicked me out of line twice and then sold out. Never trying to order a console from them again after that experience.

Companies really need to figure out how to handle pre-orders better.

These websites were complete busted the majority of the time once midnight hit. Walmart's just started working suddenly 40min. into the listing, for only a few minutes. They also sold a crap ton during this time, and might have made a mistake.

But for the most part each site was non-functional. I sat at the final step at Target ordering a thousand times, and on four different browsers, including phone. It wouldn't go through. endless refresh errors and "site is busy". In fact, the desktop website was blacked out for the majority of this time. They were shutting down connections (with 429 error) that F5'd even once.

The Best Buy queue is never even functional for me on any drop; I don't get in, and I don't receive the email or code to unlock ordering.

I don't know why companies don't learn from announcing dates and times for major pre-order items. They should always be shadow dropped. It will prevent sites from being hammered, at least for a little while. You have hundreds of thousands of people if not millions plus bots all going to a site at one time when they announce dates ahead of time and it's never not a disaster. No server can handle that kind of traffic.

Got Target and Walmart with extremely surprising ease. I am so f'ing glad I don't have to go to a Gamestop this morning lol.

Don't trust Target at all (have canceled preorders multiple times on us due to "authorization check failures" when there's never been a problem with any card we've used) so need two to keep the Nintendo launch system streak going. If the Target system actually ships, friend back home has already claimed it.

The general vibe I've seen is if you were there when they went up, you got one. That seems odd. With links well known and the date/time for sales opening well established, this seems like it would be a feast for bots. Yet, no? Either the retailers actually put in some legit bot protections (seems unlikely), supply was flush (possible) or demand is much lower than expected (also possible).

Yeah things were so much worse when all I had to do was go into the store in order to score something on a day when most people didn't feel like waiting in line.

Thank goodness for full e-commerce. Where the wannabe flippers can just sit on their asses and fat-finger things they think other people want.

I had no real issues getting one from Target in the first 10 minutes. I used the app though, didn't bother with the site. I think that was one of the issues that people were having, the site was broken but the app was more stable.

Got a preorder at Gamestop so I can cancel my Target one now. My local store had 50 total units (35 bundles). There were less than 20 people ahead of me when I arrived 15 minutes before opening, but the line was getting long when I walked out.

Target was a mess for me whether I used desktop browser, mobile browser, or the app. Walmart was surprisingly easy and Best Buy was unsurprisingly random in terms of its queue system. I entered the desktop queue immediately but I never got an invite. I entered the mobile queue much later and got in quickly.

In any case, I did my duty. My wife and kids love Mario Kart more than they love me and I've successfully completed the one task for which they place any value upon me (pre-ordering electronics). I can now spend the next five years resting in the bathroom.

The big difference between now and 2020 is you were acutally able to get the pre-order in and, dare I say, it was much easier than in 2020. Moreover, some people have one or two back-up pre-orders. It certainly could be better, but at least you and many others were actually able to get it.
And if online did not work out, you could actually go to gamestop and pre-order in store.
All in all, not a bad pre-order launch.

Saw on listing on ebay for $649.00 for the bundle and says to read the description of item in all caps

Description said "This listing is for a PRINTED screenshot Only! No console! You will receive an image of the Switch 2" 🤑

Knowing eBay, you could report that and they would say they did not find the listing to be violating any rules and leave it up.

We are the only means of acquiring these things at reasonable prices on launch for the normal people. It almost feels like we have superpowers but we use them for good instead of evil scalping.

I agree that it was much tougher back in 2020 given how less prepared the retailers were for the e-scalping. I was lucky enough to get the PS5 and Series X on launch though so I can't really speak much to the difficulties of acquiring those consoles in the immediate post-launch period.

If you can afford it, don't cancel that extra preorder at Gamestop. I am certain you could find someone willing to pay you for it in the wild or maybe even on CAG.

2020 also had external factors and people with extra money and time.

I was only able to get 2 preorders so far, which is how many I wanted, but when I get extras I usually ask around work or church and end up finding people that want it. During the shortage on Xbox Series and PS5 I ended up selling a few at cost to friends and coworkers. They know us nerds will help them out.

I might do this with my GameStop order since I want the bundle.

Somebody *has* to want it at cost right? I figure it’s also a good way to convert gs credit to cash.

I did this one time and sold at cost to a friend. He sold it for a profit.I won't ever do that again.
