NYS driving regulations

Permit--drive with parents at 16, unless in NYC in which case a permit is entirely useless.

Once you hit 17, as per the new laws, you are a full class D license with no restrictions.

Are you sure RichD1?

I think this is how it is right now:

You can get your permit as soon as you are 16. It's just a simple test. Then, after a mandatory 6 month wait and a 5-hour safety course (Check your school, mine has one like every month), you can schedule a test for your liscence. I think you also need a parent to sign something saying you've had 20 hours driving practice.

After you pass your test, you have a JD liscence until you are 18. The only difference between the Junior and Senior lisense is that you cannot drive between 9PM and 5AM. I think thats it.

Before you turn 18, if you take a valad Drivers Ed course, you can upgrade your Junior liscence to a Senior one before you are 18.

I made it by 10 days under the new laws that make you wait 6 months before getting your liscence. Lucky me.

If you have any more questions, lemme know.

Yes, i'm positive.
The new laws get rid of the 6 month wait and you can no longer take a road test at 16.

I was thinking that one only needs twenty hours, no six months from this link, look in the text box

You don't need either. All you need is a driver's ed certificate and you can get your class D license by passing a road test on your 17th birthday. Taking the additional hours allows you to take your road test at 16, but still can't drive until 17

i believe its 24 hours, a full day.

when youre 16 u can get your permit, which allows u to drive with a parent in the car. you may also apply for a junior's license, that is, if you have a job, you get a form that allows u to drive to and from work and to and from school by yourself, but you cannot drive between the hours of 9pm and 6am.

to get the juniors tho u must pass a road test first. then once u turn 17 u have a license

so basically the course of action i would take if i were u is get your permit at 16, take drivers ed, because not only is it a help, but you can save 10-20% off your car insurance(trust me every bit helps), then 3/4 of the way through drivers ed, or after drivers ed, take your road test. at this point you should either be 17 or close to it. if youre 17 you'll havea full license, if still 16, full license on your 17th birthday
