Rampage Total Destruction -- is it really that bad?

CAGiversary!
I know it's been getting bad reviews, but I'm hoping to hear some impressions from a Real Person. I saw a video of it on that Wii DVD from Best Buy, and it looked decent. Not amazing or anything, but fun. I did like Rampage World Tour, but I thought the sequels that followed were samey and had worse level design. I never tried Total Destruction on any system because of this. I think with the Wii controls, perhaps the game will feel a bit more fresh and fun. Also, it's $30.

So what's wrong with it? Are the controls poor, or is it just that the game itself sucks?

I've got the GameCube version and it's not a bad update to Rampage. Rampage is what it is though, a simplistic, mindless romp that's never going to win any awards for depth or get high review scores.

Having played the GC version, I'm not sure how the Wii controller would benefit this game. Do you just move the controller to punch or what?

it would be funny if you had your facts straight and weren't talking out of your ass.

it's a cloning clyde gamerpic, btw. ;)

I have the GC version and I enjoy the included original games alot more. The sequel to the original is probably the best one.

And yeah the controls ruin the new game. And the 3d. It's a pain to lineup just right to hit a helicopter out of the air.

Also at some point adding more features and options to a game just doesn't make it more fun.

I haven't played it, but the controls would be cool if you actually punched the buildings like Wii Boxing. My son has fun playing the GC version of this game with friends because of the destruction and mayhem, but it does get boring for them after awhile because there are no goals/objectives/story.

I bought it at launch and then realized that was a huge mistake. I then returned Rampage at the local CC, and the cashier put it in the bag with the other seven things I was buying at the time. When I got home (hour away btw), I decided to try it out and it still isn't worth it. It's a miserable game (even with the original and World Tour included).

The monster animations look okay. Even the building smashin is fun for a while. But it offers nothing new over the original arcade games. It gets repetitive very fast. The Wii Controls offer nothing serisouly innovative. Get it for 10 bucks instead. Better yet, get Metal Slug Anthology ;-)

I rented this a couple days ago. I played it for about 45 minutes and was not impressed at all. The Wii controls are not very responsive, and the only learning curve involved is the 20 minutes it takes to figure out what ass-backwards way you have to move the remote in order to get your character to actually do what you want--and even then it's a crapshoot.

For the $30 they're asking, you'd really be better off buying an N64 and Rampage World Tour.

If you've played Rampage World Tour, here are the updates: much better graphics, powered up punch, and a "Rampage" meter (which you don't know when you're going to hit it, it just shouts out Rampage and you glow red) which allows your punches and kicks to register more damage. The smash mode concept is the same, but you swing your arms down to smash instead of ground pound. However, I wish you the best of luck trying to pull off a smash with the Wii controls.

It does include the earlier versions, Rampage World Tour (from the N64) and Rampage (I think from the SNES??). I thought that was pretty sweet at first, and then I had a twinge of impulse to buy it, BUT!! while I was playing both earlier versions at different times, the sound crapped out on me and there was just buzzing and squealing. The framerate in Rampage World Tour slows down to where you are playing in slowmo, which would actually be a cool effect for a Rampage game, were it actually intended and not a shitty emulation job. In addition, playing R:WT on the Wii sucks because they've mapped "kick" to the A button, so you can't possibly run and kick at the same time unless you are a mutant and have an extra thumb sticking out of your hand.

So, having said that, if you find it for $5, pick it up. Otherwise, if you want a pretty Rampage game, try R:TD on the Cube/PS2/Xbox version. If you don't care about graphics, buy yourself the N64 cart, because I think that's when the game really peaked, and that would be money well spent.

Thanks for the impressions.

I actually didn't like the original Rampage much. I owned it way back in the day on Sega Master System, and it got boring fast. I got it again on Midway Arcade Treasures, and played it like twice before getting sick of it. But when World Tour came out, I enjoyed it a lot. Side note, fatalfury, you recommend specifically the N64 cart twice -- is there something particularly special about the N64 version? I guess it's better for three-player mode (since Playstation requires a multitap, and the Saturn version was mysteriously missing the three-player option), but other than that, I can't imagine any differences. And anyway, I have MAT2 on Gamecube, so I'm covered.

Anyway, with all the negative comments about the controls, I will definitely pass. Thanks for saving me thirty bucks guys. :)

Oh, no, I didn't mean it as a difference between platforms for World Tour. I have the N64 version myself, so I suppose that's why it sticks in my head. :p I just meant to recommend World Tour over the newest (or oldest) iteration. I'm sure WT on the other platforms is just as good. :D

Note: do not play without the Nunchuck or you will have much difficulty figuring out which way to tilt the wii-mote to get your character to take a step.
With the nunchuck its pretty playable as a quick time-filler. The game is definitely better for short periods of time and not for long stretches of play.

When I played it, the game mentioned nothing about using the Nunchuck.
