Anyone know any really good RPG's for the Gamecube, I was just wondering because a college dorm buddy wanted to know of any for his GC since he's looking for some good games.

Tales of Symphonia
Baten Kaitos
Phantasy Star Online Eps. I and II
SKies of Arcadia Legends
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
all i can think of at the moment
I highly reccommend PSO and SKies

EDIT: Seriously, PSO and Skies are both amazing, some of the best RPG's of this console generation.

Baiten Kaitos
Zelda

That's pretty much all there is, unless he's into Phantasy Star Online. *shudders*
You forgot Skies of Arcadia

tales of symphonia is better than skies. I personally think diablo is better than PSO.

baten kaitos should be good too, many people think it's better than tales, although I have not gotten up to it yet.

Skies is pretty bad. Random encounters ahoy. Plus the storyline sucks.

PSO is only cool if you don't have an internet-ready PC. If you're reading this message, don't get PSO. Get Diablo 2 instead.

Tales of Symphonia is pretty good. Fun combat. So-so story.

Paper Mario 2 is probably the best RPG on the system. Buy it.

And I haven't played Baten Kaitos yet (someone trade it to me, dammit!) but I've heard good things.

umm, we're talking about the gamecube here buddy

Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kantos, paper mario and Zelda (its an RPG to me).

Skip tales unless you like over-rated games with random encounters every 4 seconds.

Tales of Symphonia is highly overrated IMHO.
AGREE'D

i juuuuust got done beating it, put in about 55 hours and did pretty much everything there was to do. It had a lot of good moments, but it hard almost as many lame moments. I found the story to be kinda weak also. I didn't care much for the battle system either. Still I'd say it is worth a play, as it did have some excellent moments. It's almost like they had all the ingredients for a great game and just threw them all in the blender without regard to how well things mixed or turned out, and ToS is what came out. If they would have refined things A LOT this game could have been special. As it stands now I'd rate it slightly below Skies.
Lost Kingdoms is insanely underrated - it's just as good as other hack and slashes like Baldurs Gate DA, it just uses cards instead.

You're back? Good to hear.

^^No, we're talking about GOOD RPG's, not crap that was originally on the DC.

Skip tales unless you like over-rated games with random encounters every 4 seconds.

Further proof that people haven't played a game 90% of the time when they critique a game

After reading what people said on this thread, I can tell you with great confidence that people in this thread have no idea what they're talking about.

Tales of Symphonia is my game of the year, the story is absolutely phenominal and after the first 2 or 3 hours original and completely unexpected.

Skies of Arcadia is like no other RPG I've ever played, the storyline is really good and the battle system rules. The ship battles are good and yeah.

Every Gamecube owner should have those two games.

Paper Mario is good, Baten Kaitos is strong in every aspect except its so-so story and questionable voice acting.
What, no mention of Evolution Worlds?
One of the shittiest games of all time. You could also get LOTR: Third Age, or or Mega Man X: Command Mission. Both are pretty mediocre, but definately preferable to Evolution Worlds.

I am of the opinion that the Cube is underrated in the RPG category. Here are my suggestions, for what they're worth:

- Tales of Symphonia is a pretty good "traditional" RPG, with all the leveling-up, item acquisition, and such. It isn't without some flaws, but it's good for 50-60 enjoyable hours (plus decent replay value) and a terrifically addictive action combat system built around a serviceable enough plot. No random battles. Good graphics and voicework. I disagree with the overrated remark, especially now that it can be had on some sites for $20-30 used. Definitely worth it at that price. Some co-op multiplayer, although it's really a single-player game at heart.

- Skies of Arcadia is also a traditional RPG... and it's good for 50 hours for only $20. It's odd because the graphics are dated, the random battles are numerous (although the game alleviates this problem later in the game), and the dialogue is clunky.... BUT, the characters are charming, the plot is endearing (if simple), and the game as a whole really sucks you in. And the music is pretty cool, too. This game is better than it should be.

- Baten Kaitos is also a solid RPG that uses cards in a real-time fashion (think speed poker). It isn't a perfect game (the voice-overs leave something to be desired), but it's really pretty and has a surprisingly-addictive combat system. The plot isn't revolutionary, but it is charming. Good for 60 hours.

- Paper Mario is a little different than the traditional RPG, but it's one of the Cube's best games overall and is good for 40-50 hours. Great plot, nice graphics, hilarious dialogue, cool battle engine. Not really an RPG purist's game, per say, but that doesn't mean it's not a great game... it's a hybrid of Mario and some RPG elements, like Superstar Saga or Super Mario RPG (SNES).

A few others that often go overlooked:

- Gladius: often-overlooked tactical RPG (like Final Fantasy Tactics); pretty good production values, interesting premise, good for 40 hours x 2 different storylines. A little repetitive (arena-style combat) but offers a good amount of variety, too. OK co-op and competitive multiplayer functionality. It can be had for pretty cheap ($10 to $20).

- X-Men Legends: action RPG in the vein of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Great plot, great characters, OK graphics, nice leveling-up system, decent mulitplayer functionality. 25-30 hours.

- Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. It is, unfortunately, an inferior port of the Xbox and PS2 versions, but it is still pretty good (if choppy at times) and can be had on the cheap. 20-30 hours.

- Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. A ho-hum single player but pretty cool multiplayer game. The graphics won't blow you away and the leveling-up system is pretty simple, but it is still a lot of fun. Pretty long, too.

- Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. Traditional turn-based RPG. A little disappointing, but has its virtues. Worth a look if the price ever gets down to $20. 30-35 hours.

- Mega Man X Command Mission: A little short (20-30 hours), traditional turn-based RPG. Pretty game, average voicework. Worth a rental at least.

A couple of other remarks:

- Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is designed around GBA connectivity, and is sort of a disappointment if you don't have multiple GBA's. It is gorgeous, though.

- Lost Kingdoms 2 is a little disappointing, too, but it is worth a rental at least, and others have found it to be more entertaining.

- PSO I and II: I got the "Plus" version and it is probably not where I'd prioritize my money, at least in hindsight.

- Evolution Worlds? Just stay away.

I definitely reccommend Tales of Symphonia, Xmen Legends, and Paper mario TTYD. Aforementioned, stay away from Evolution Worlds, but PSO, Baldurs Gate DA, Lord of the Rings TTA are pretty decent.

People need to realize that Zelda is NOT an RPG... sheesh.

Paper Mario is a really great game, and I recommend it highly. Tales is also pretty good, I'll admit though that the GC is lacking in the RPG department.
Zelda is not a rpg.
well, you do "play" the "role" of link, and it is a "game"

Skies of Arcadia
Tales of Symphonia
Baten Kaitos
Phantasy Star Online
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles

That's all I can think of.
