I need a new couch for my living room. The kids have basically destroyed the one we have now. Here is the criteria:

1. Not too deep. My living room is only 7'10" wide.

2. Leather. I'd prefer a leather couch, I think - something that won't stain and absorb liquid.

3. Comfortable (duh).

4. Sort of modern looking(?). I'll know it when I see it, I guess.

5. 3 (or 4) seater.

Any recommendations?

Something like THIS maybe?

My cats claw the fuck out of our couch and chairs. Will leather help us avoid this? I'm waiting to buy new furniture until we move.

sort of. it wont be as appealing for them to scratch but it will more easily show the damage.

Ikea's stuff is pretty good. West Elm is another good option.

Also, your couch will never be as great as the one Hank Hill and crew made in the alley. It had an awning and hydraulics. Deal with it.

Also, wtf. Javery. Build it.

Second West Elm. There stuff is really cool, modern looking designs but classic at the same time. I have a bedroom set from there and love it.

This.

Also, Rod was it comfy?

Not at all, probably the most uncomfortable thing I sat in.

We got a nice couch/loveseat from Ikea almost a year ago now. It's help up very nice, although I tore the slip cover putting it back on once.

Best part is, no springs in the cushion! No removable cushions. (If you have kids who like to jump on the couch or take it apart, this is a major plus)

[quote name='Rodimus']Unrelated but I sat in this chair made out of Famicom carts at the top floor of Super Potato in Tokyo.

So did I. You say it was uncomfortable. I say it was the chair of the gods.

I really need to upload my pics of my Japan trip. There is a picture of me sitting on this chair.

Not sure how much you want to spend but Italsofa and Natuzzi make great modern leather sofas and sectionals (think they are both made by the same company). We have an awesome Italsofa sectional that has served us well for about 4-5 years. They are pricey though. Leather ages nicely but it does show "wear" when it ages with wrinkles and aging depending on the particular hide. We have two chihuahuas and if you get up real close - like a few inches from it - you can see scratch marks from their paws. Our only child is 5 months so I can't speak to wear and tear from children yet. You might also look into to Ekornes - we have two of their Stressless recliners and they are amazing. I know they do make some sofas too - just mostly recliners (also $$$.)

I had a couch like that. But lost it when I had to loan it to my sisters boyfriend after he broke both his legs when he went skydiving and his chute didn't open. He was like 7 foot tall and needed an extra long couch to recuperate on. She broke up with him not long after that...and the dick never gave my couch back.

I always liked those big plush poofy couches. They're so comfortable. My house will have one of those.

I hate leather. It's uncomfortable.

Don't get me wrong, the chair is awesome as a piece. But you gotta be kidding me if you thought it was comfortable.

I was driving around and saw a crushed velvet magenta couch on the side of the highway. You could come pick that up, Javery.

It hasn't rained yet so it's totally good to go.

Probably not.

Look into getting a scratching post/box of some kind now, before you get the new stuff, and see if they take to anything. I know our cats are crazy about those corrugated cardboard scratch boxes with catnip you can get cheap most places. (we get 'em at Daiso for $1.50 each.) If you can get 'em interested in something else, they might opt to leave your new furniture alone.

I'm afraid I know nothing about couches to contribute.

Yeah, this thread made me start searching for ideas. And the scratching posts always are suggested. I'm not declawing my cats due to fact that it is cutting off their knuckles. Thanks for the advice.

I think they'd claw at it as much as any other furniture. Plus, with leather, it would prolly show easier.
Also, do they sometimes not go in their litter box/outside? I've heard leather furniture is a hotspot for cat "accidents". So, if your cat takes a defiant dump every now and then, expect it to leave a hulking pile on your leather furniture!

That being said, I love leather furniture. I have a leather couch in the apartment living room. Will someday add a few matching leather recliners (when we have the space).

This looks similar to the couch I have, though it's not the one I have. Recliners for the outside two people. Had mine for about two years now.
