PRESS RELEASE: Rockstar Games Announces Bully

Press release supplied by Games Press 13:38 09/05/2005
New York, NY- May 9, 2005 - Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) is proud to announce Bully for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and Xbox® video game system from Microsoft. Bully takes the Rockstar tradition of groundbreaking, innovative, original gameplay and humorous tongue-in-cheek storytelling to an entirely new setting: the schoolyard. Bully is the brutally funny debut title from Rockstar Vancouver and is expected to hit retail shelves in October 2005. Bully will be shown behind closed doors in the Rockstar booth at E3 (324 South Hall).

"We are really excited about the first title to be developed by our Rockstar Vancouver studio," said Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. "We fought hard to keep this title under wraps for ages and I am thrilled that we can finally unveil it to people at E3."

As a troublesome schoolboy, you'll laugh and cringe as you stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school, Bullworth Academy.

Sounds like an interesting idea for a game.

When I saw the heading, I thought we were gonna see a game based on the Larry Clark movie. Now THAT would be a game!

First Rockstar brings back the dying genre of the beatemup with The Warriors...

Now they are bringing back the old school adventure game?

Much props to Rockstar for bringing back long forgotten genres.

If it were most other companies I'd think this was probably going to be crap. But since it's Rockstar I'll definitely be taking a close look at this one.

Though the fact that it's apparently the first title from some new division of Rockstar doesn't fill me with confidence.

Roufuss - nothing from that press release says this will be an old school style Adventure game. I wouldn't bet on that unless you know something more about this one.

Sounds like another target for the media to blame school-related violence on. Still sounds neat. I like when companies try to break away from the norm like this.

You know what'll be fun to see, they should include class elements (you have to do hw, take tests, listen to lecture) into the game. I mean, you can't join a bully gang until you can do integration right?

sounds like a fun concept. they should let you visit the gym and start pumping the guns. when you reach a level of buffness you get to kick the crap out of your bullies.

I can already expect plenty of minigames (backyard sports?)

also it sounds a lot like a kid friendly GTA, but it might just backfire on them, especially with nuts like Jack Thompson running around:

"This game is simply so the evil people of Rockstar can brainwash another generation earlier"

it's like rockstar starts their game development backwards. they imagine which gametype and storyline will generate the most lawsuits....hmmm child bullies is a hot topic. let's design a game where the character can terrorize a school. it will teach kids to further disrespect authority and torture those who are perceived to be weak.
