I go into a pawn shop the other day, see some sealed wireless xbox 360 controllers for 49.95. I then ask her if she'll go any lower and she said "No, they're the lowest prices in town"

then I said "They're 40 at circuit city."

Shaq-fuing stupid

The MSRP for the wireless controllers is $49.99, so regardless of the Circuit City sale, $49.95 could technically be considered the lowest price in town.

Forgive my ignorance, but why would a pawn shop have brand new, sealed 360 controllers? Maybe my perception of pawn shops is obsolete, but don't pawn shops buy used stuff then turn around and sell them?

Crackheads steal 360 stuff and sell to pawn shops for a quick fix

Sounds like you speak from experience there eh Scorchey.

PS - Is that a crack pipe I see next to your PC? ;)
^she probably didnt even hear me, i just said it and walked out shortly after
I was hoping she'd call you a liar or be speechless, but oh well.
Either that or they sell the item far below what it should be. I won't complain too much there myself. ;)
Then why'd you pass on that Mario Kart DS for $20 at Pawn America on Saturday? I know I snatched it up.

It could be considered a low price, but the lowest price is not an opinion. If there was a Circuit City in that town (or any other place selling them for lower) than it was not the lowest price in town.

Most pawn shops sell new merchandise too. When I managed one, we had upwards of 200 new items, including game accessories. Also, pawn shop owners are greedy bastards and will do ANYTHING to make a buck, lie, cheat, steal, whatever. There are no morals in the pawn shop game, and that's on both sides of the counter. It's basically a battle of which side can screw each other harder .

Some owners have a theory with video games, the older they are, the more expensive they are. There was one I went to on occasion because they would have x-box games cheaper then the atari games :).

yea, theres a guy in a flea market in that area near the pawn shop i mentioned that sells sega genesis games for 8 bucks or so a piece, but the thing is that theyre all sports games and he sells crappy sega cd games for 12 bucks a piece claiming they're cd format(he just advertises that its the cd format). He also has something that shows PSX in action and dreamcast in action......PLEASE

I'm waiting to get a really good deal at a pawn shop I frequent...I got a mint, complete copy of Skygunner PS2 for $10, whereas the EB Games not far down the road sold it disc-only in a poor replacement case for $15.

One of these days, a Valkyrie Profile will show up and I will rebuy a copy for $15 or $20.

I don't understand this whole thread. Why didn't you just go to Circuit City to buy the damn controller? Why are they stupid for charging MSRP for hot item? Are they supposed to take it in the ass just because you told them that Circuit City has the same item for cheaper?

I have a friend that owns a pawn shop. They really don't care about things like controllers... Pawn Shops are in it for the gold... they really don't need to give a rats ass about anything else they sell. They are in the business of buying gold/diamond rings/necklaces for $10/$20 a piece.

She probably hopes that some guy will come in and trade his gold teeth for them or something...

Getting $49.99 or even $39.99 from you did not interest her at all.

I've seen some crazy examples of overpricing at pawn shops myself:

-A used Player's Choice version of Super Mario Sunshine for $22.95, a few months ago. That store is usually pretty decent with pricing, but that was a big WTF.
-A complete copy of Xena for the N64 for around $55 at a different store about a year and a half ago. This place was charging $10 for loose Genesis sports titles as well. Needless to say, I never went back there.

You hit the nail on the head there. And that's where the problem lies with pawn shops, if they cared a little more about their other products they probably wouldn't have such a bad reputation.
^ The problem with that is that there are pawn shops that don't sell gold at all.
They might not sell, but they always buy. There is a huge scrap market for gold and some shops sell directly to scrap unless it's something exquisite. If they don't buy gold, they are not a pawn shop.

AND FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW:

Gold is worth approximately $650 an OUNCE, most pawn shops pay the equivalent of $250 an ounce when they buy jewelry. If you every want to sell gold, take it to a coin shop, never a pawn shop, and ask them for 15% below dealer price, most stores will snatch it up for that. Or you can sell it to me :)

There are some decent pawnshops out there. You're right of course about every pawnshop wanting gold (and don't forget the guns!), but there's a really nice one in Catlettsburg, KY called Tri-State Pawn & Shop that sells DVD movies for $5 a pop and Current Gen games for $8. They don't change prices according to the value or rarity of the DVD or game, if you're lucky, you're lucky. I've found some killer deals there. You just have to remember to check the disc out before you go through buying it.

4 cents cheaper than the competitors!

Some stores will base their prices on the number of discs. One store was selling PS1 games for a flat $5 each per disc.
