Super Mario 64 DS underrated?

CAGiversary!
Yeah I know this game got pretty good reviews when it came out, but they weren't as high as I would have thought. At least... not after playing it! Granted, I was skeptical of the d-pad for control... and at first I was terrible at controlling my character... until I got used to it... and then... I think I could control it better than the 64 version! The game actually seemed easier and I played the 64 version not that long ago! Overall, the game seems super refined compared to the 64 version... I really really liked it. I think maybe people were a little unfair with the reviews because the first game worth owning on the DS was a port? I think it should have gotten 9's (or equivalent) instead of 7s or 8s. Anyway, /pointless ramble

The reason it got low(er) scores is because everyone and their uncle played SM64 with an analog stick and were bothered by the less precise control. If it weren't for that reference point I'd bet that SM64DS would have had better average scores.

You can get used to to D-Pad but in the end the game suffers moving in 3-D space with a digital input. I played all the way through SM64DS and in the end was satisfied, but there is no way I'd give the game higher than an 8 due to the control.

... perhaps I should try playing again on my Lite, since the D-Pad is much more responsive and comfortable...

... once I get through the huge amount of games I'll be playing this fall, perhaps...

Yeah he nailed it on the head. Even I, as a first time SM64 player, found the controls icky. The inclusion of Yoshi, Wario, and Luigi made somewhat of a difference but it's nothing they couldn't have all given to Mario.

With that said, I can see why even in this day and age it is the most iconic 3D platformers. Game works almost too well.

If I want to play Mario64, I'll just turn on my N64 and play it. Which I did right around the time the DS and its version of M64 came out. The game still holds up.

I still don't understand everyone's beef with the controls. I had no problem whatsoever playing with the d-pad. Great game on either system.

So you guys really thought the control wasn't as good? I've only had a DS Lite... but in the end I think I could control it as good, if not better than the 64 version.

Well, I'm chugging through it, but it's really failed to capture my attention that much. I agree with the analog stick... back on N64 this game was much easier to control. It doesn't come up all the time but throwing Bowser is a bit awkward, as well as walking/tip-toeing (as opposed to running).

I actually liked Donkey Kong 64 a lot better than Mario 64.

It was the first time I played Mario 64 and it was alright. I actully miss it when I turned it in and I mite re-buy it. The only problem was the controls and camera.

The controls were iffy at first, but i definitely got used to them and had no problems. It was a fun game, I wish characters could switch on the fly though.

Of course this game is underrated. I've also had alot of fun with it even though I used to play the original alot on the N64. I just wanted SM64 in portable form and thought it was coolest thing since sliced cheese when I bought it. I don't think the controls are bad either and the DS doesn't need an analog stick.

The only problems I had was when I upgraded to a DS Lite and my d-pad could not perform the diagonals well but they eventually broke in as I kept playing.

For some reason I coulden't get into it like I did with the N64 version, probably because of the controls. It's still one of the most legendary and best games of all time... though on N64, that is. I mean, its fuckin' made to play with a stick.

I also have good memories of getting an N64 at launch and buying this. $50 and worth every damn penny, cant wait for the Wii :D

decent, but the controls limit how long I can stand to play it. This is the only portable game that made me wish I could just plug a controller in the DS just do can play.
