I came across this on another message board, and was wondering is there any truth to this ?? Also mario 3 is old, and i was wondering if there hasn't been a newer game that broke ther record ?? I know orcina of time was the fastest selling game... but other then that, anybody know the most - sold game in history so far ?

According to guiness book of world records....

Best-Selling Video Games
The Nintendo game Super Mario Brothers has sold a total of 40.23 million copies worldwide. The 26 games featuring Mario, the character who first appeared in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1982, have sold more than 152 million copies in total since 1983. More than 40% of US households own a Nintendo game system.

*EDIT* Also found this at IGN....

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the best selling video game of all time. Well if you want to get technical, it’s the best selling stand-alone game. The original Super Mario Bros. actually has the most copies sold, but it had the advantaged of being packed in with the NES.

It was definately an awesome game, and it is no surprise to me. I know I made my parents buy it for me when it first came out.

I thought I heard something about Tetris being the best selling video game ever...might have been before Mario 3 started coming out on GBA, etc.

I would imagine that the Tetris figure counts numerous systems.

Of course it does...that is why I thought it was in first. I was simply stating that I thought it was beating Mario 3 until Mario 3 was released on multiple systems in turn boosting its sales...

Sometime I should buy Super Mario Advance 4, so I can play this again. This was like one of my favorite games ever back when it first come out, and it still is one of my favorite games.

I found it sad that I didn't beat the nes version first because I got stuck on one of the last levels, but when mario all-stars came out, I finally did. It seemed easy compared to the lost levels, those were insane.

While I am sort of surprised, I kinda suspected that SMB3 would be somewhere near the top.

BTW as a stand alone game SMB3 has only been released on the NES and GBA. I believe that IGN quote was before the GBA ver came out. As for tetris, it might very well be the most PLAYED game of all time, but aside from the GB ver, it didn't do all to well in sales.

You make it sound like Mario 3 was ported to more than just GBA.

Remember Mario All-Stars on the SNES? The GBA version is based on the improved version of SMB3 in that cart.

Also, if Mario All-Stars is counted as part of SMB3 sales this really puts it way up there. I suppose we could divide the Mario All-Stars sales by four if we want to handicap it for fairness. I can't find numbers for the US and Europe but Mario All-Stars moved 2.12 million units in Japan. Figure at least five million worldwide, especially since it was long bundled with the SNES.

I myself have three versions of the game - original NES release, Mario All-Stars, and Mario Advance 4. I love Mario Bros. 3. I think it's the best 2D game in the series.

the figure does not include the other versions. Nintendo had a list of sales figures of all previous Mario titles in one of the issues of NP

Yea mario 3 is damn good, i just beat the first one for the first time today........ youd think all these years i woulda beaten it....... hell i own like 15 copies of it
Whats the most selling game in Japan? I'm guessing it has to be like FFX or something, I think that sold 1 million the first day!
I doubt it is a FF game. If it was an RPG, the Dragon Warrior series would be a better choice considering it sells more copies in Japan.

Above is a useful all-time best sellers list for the Japanese market. (The US list on the same site only goes back to 1995 so it doesn't cover most 8 and 16-bit titles.) Super Mario Bros. is way up there but most of that can be attributed to its longtime bundle status. SMB 3 only has about 60% of that number but every one of those was bought by choice rather than default.

Later on, Mario Kart managed to outsell the bundled Super Mario World but by then the bundles didn't last as long and other titles like Mario All-Stars and Donkey Kong Country were rotated in.

The Pokemons hit the truly phenomenal 8 million mark but that combines three different versions. Some people might find that disputable as one title.

Super Mario Bros. 3 used to be the best selling game of all time...The Sims now holds the title if I remember correctly.

Edit: I take that back, The Sims is the best selling PC game of all time...SMB3 still holds the record.

Personally, I would have thought Tetris. But on second thought, there are so many versions out there, that no single one is the highest selling.

Watch this showoff!
It's really cool, too bad it's fake...
It isn't fake. It just isn't exactly real. From my understanding it was done with emulators but it wasn't as if the guy hand animated it.

Edit: Yeah you are right about the emulator thing, he slowed the game down to 1/30 second and saved frequently before the hard parts according to his website...He pretty much made the video frame by frame.
