Tempur-Pedic beds, worth the price?

Just wondering, Tempur-Pedic beds worth the hefty price tag, or can better, inexpensive beds be had for cheaper? Currently suffering from lower back pain so looking for a good bed, also, what is better for bad backs, Firm or Soft mattresses?

I know people who have them, and they are really nice. But I just picked up a foam mattress from Ikea and love it. And it was a whole lot cheaper than a Tempur-Pedic. Although it may not last as long. So I'll see.

I don't know, but I welcome any situation in which a Mitch Hedberg joke presents itself:

"The Tempur-Pedic bed is by NASA, and it's spongy, and if you call the number, they give you a free sample. So I ordered 1,400 free samples. ...and got some glue. So, basically, I fucked over NASA. Which makes me scared of their space program."

NO. No in a big way. I think this is one of the few times I actually might have more experience that most. Heres the deal, I work in a matress department at Macys, actually worked there a few years. Tempurpedic beds are not bad beds, but working for a company that excels at forcing companies to give discounts, thats one of the few brands that NEVER lets discounts work, never even on sales. And thats saying something for the top matress retailer in the country. Heres another thing, working there and seeing the god awful $1500 price tag on their most basic queen set, and trying all the other options its not worth it. Ironically we had the Sealy version for 1/2 the price and we stopped carrying it.

Bottom line, there are knock offs that are just as good and that are wayyyy cheaper. Youll find all Temperpedics are the same price at every store (mostly) and over priced. I personally got a good queen at a store called "the dump" (KOP, PA) and it was only 700. I think my brand is "Dormir" but I think nowadays everyone makes a version, I know sealy does at least.

Heres another tip from a matt salesman, be VERY sure you like the bed. Lay on it for 15-20 min if you need to. No joke. You have no idea how many times Ive had people by a bed they were on for 30 secs, buy it, and when it gets delivered they cant even sleep on it. Literally sleeping on the couch instead, and this is more so for foam beds.

EDIT:

Saw the post for the air matress. DO NOT use an air matress if you have a bad back. Back issues come from poor support systems when you sleep. Air does not support your back. Comfortable for a short period, but like a water bed, will more than likely give you back problems as you get older.

we had a 4 inch tempurpedic topper for about 2 years.....when we finally bought a new mattress we didnt go with the memory foam for a few reasons:

1. You feel stuck in the bed
2. Sex is awkward
3. Its hot

we LOVED how soft it was though so we went with a quick reaction foam which is super soft but springs back quickly..

i couldnt stand it, we had one and it went back. like malik said, you feel like youre stuck in the bed.
i also get hot when i sleep and that bed was especially hot for me. i have a sealy or serta i forget we paid less and it is the best bed ive ever had for sure.

I HATE mine. It has actually caused my lower back pain and I can't wait to get rid of it. I end up sleeping in the spare room a lot of nights because my own bed is so uncomfortable. Ugh.

I had lower back issues sleeping, which caused me to wake up in pain every morning. about 8 years ago, my fiancee and I decided to give it a shot and got a Tempur-Pedic. Best $2000 I ever spent.

No more back pain in the morning, and it has held up better than any other mattress I've had. We get spoiled by it, and miss the mattress any time we stay anywhere else. It's a little different---not in any respect uncomfortable, but you need to get used to the idea of sleeping on something that feels different than any conventional mattress you've ever used. That said, I like it a lot more.

So, is it worth it? For me, absolutely, without a doubt, yes.

We bought one several years ago and love it! Took about two weeks to get used to it though as it does have a break-in period. I feared that the bed would get too warm for me, but have not had a problem with that. Unlike what others have mentioned, I have had fewer back problems since getting a Tempurpedic bed. We tried several mattresses with, and without, different toppers, and I always had back problems until we got the Tempurpedic bed. One option you may try, their website used to list hotels that have Tempurpedic beds, if one is near try one out for a night or two. Oh, and sex is different on one, but if you take the time to figure out the difference, your partner will like the bed too!

Here is the link I mentioned with the hotels: http://www.tempurpedic.com/about/partnerships/hotels/

One other thing, not all foam beds and toppers are the same. Memory foam comes in several types and though some have mentioned having Tempurpedic toppers, I don't believe that company makes toppers, only mattresses. Foam beds and toppers are made in both open and closed cell types. There is a big difference between the two when it comes to durability and heat retention.

I broke a disc in my back (long story). Asked my neurosurgeon as well as back doctors, PT people, etc etc what they recommend. All of them said a firmer mattress is better. Currently I've got a sealy that I got at Macys about a year ago that is pretty good. I didn't care for the Tempur-Pedics myself.

We got a Bobopedic for my son, definetly let it air outside of the home for atleast a few days. We did not and his bedroom stunk with fumes. even with the windows open. Then we put it out on the porch for a day and its getting better.

My wife and I have had one for around 7 years (still using it). It's not bad, but I think it is overhyped and overpriced. I have lower back pain and was hoping this would alleviate much of it. It hasn't helped me at all. Hindsight tells me that I do better with a firmer mattress that supports better posture- but YMMV since this really depends on the person. I think if you have bad posture already, memory foam only exacerbates that problem.

Some other things to consider:

1) It doesn't really bounce back 100% after years of use. Even with frequent mattress flipping there is a definite slope in our main sleeping areas. This is true of any mattress, but perhaps not as evident with memory foam.

2) Sex is tougher. It absorbs a lot of your momentum kind of like running on sand.

3) Everyone is different. You should really go to a store and try out what feels right for you and your partner.

Good thread btw, I'm interested in hearing others' suggestions.
