I just knew selling a console on eBay was (likely) going to bite me in the ass...

So, a couple weeks ago, I sold a PS3 on eBay. It's the MGS4 edition; the one with BC and 4 USB ports. It went for a good amount.

Shipped on October 1 (Parcel Post...because Priority was fucking $38!) and it arrived to the user a couple days ago. He left positive feedback and I did the same for him. Had signature confirmation. They tried to deliver one day and failed, so, it sat at his post office for a day or two...but eventually, he got it.

None of that is really important, I guess. Today, I got a message on eBay from the buyer:

"I am going to have to send unit back to you. CD won't register or eject. Allowed me put in black ops, let me play yesterday. nothing today. How do we go about this?"

What...the...fuck?!

I replied that the unit had never been opened, was in immaculate condition and never had a single issue while I owned it (I was the original owner). I suggested that maybe it was his disc, and to try a different copy.

Before I sent it, I took pictures of the serial number and the warranty sticker (that shows it hadn't been opened).

What can happen here? Can he try and file a chargeback and shit if he's already left feedback? I didn't offer any type of returns or anything. The console was perfect, and while I know PS3's can fail (especially the older ones), I have a hard time buying it failed just after a new user got it. (I packed it up very nice.)

Bolded in case I ran long; I'm quite angry right now. Just couldn't stand the Craigslist fakes and lowballers.

i cant say for sure as i dont really know. (havent had this happen to me after feedback) but ebay sides with the buyer damn near 100% of the time regardless of proof, so my money is on you being screwed. you may be better off just having him send the unit back, though that sucks since you will be out the shipping/fees. and he is sending a broken console wich may not even be the unit you sent him. seems like a lose/lose situation, but i have 0 faith in ebay when it comes to protecting their sellers.

Actually eBay might just refund the buyer out of their own pocket. Normally that's what happens when a buyer pulls something like this on me. eBay will likely right "neither the buyer nor seller is at fault" and send him a refund. If you can get the unit back because it is still worth something, but make sure eBay is the one that refunds him and not you.

I wouldn't worry about the feedback thing. It is possible for him to make a reply maybe take it back, but that would require way to much effort on his part. Unless you make him really upset, he won't spend the time to do it.

I'm just not sure if anything would happen because of the positive feedback already left.

Oh, I forgot to mention. I sent the serial number to him after he paid via an eBay message. (Along with the tracking number and all that stuff.) I wanted documented proof that he knew the serial number before it arrived.

If he were to happen to send back a different console...would eBay even care that ther serial number is different? (Who am I kidding...they prolly wouldn't care at all...)

This is one of those horror stories that makes me paranoid about using eBay.

Anyways, the buyer leaving feedback does NOT prevent him from filing a chargeback or opening up a dispute/claim in the eBay Resolution Center (I think).

Personally, I would (very politely) ask the buyer if he would be willing to shoot a video documenting the issues he is having, making sure to include shots of the serial number and warranty sticker.

Well, I may be okay.

The seller sent me another message, apologizing. Apparently he has a second PS3 that is having trouble reading discs...and he mistook that one for mine (which I guess was sitting right next to it). I have a feeling he was prolly gonna try and return the busted one to me, but, my somewhat forceful reply emails may have scared him out of it. (Or, he is actually quite stupid and just mistook the machine.)

Either way...I'm happy...for now.

Lol, definitely sounds like he was going to try and scam you.

In my experience they have only done that in cases where something is lost in the mail. If they did it for not as described cases it would be too easy for a seller to take advantage of (send something broken, claim it was working when shipped, etc).
