www.digitpress.com is a great source of info regarding classic systems and the games released for them. Using their online rarity guide I compiled a list of the scarcest US released PS1 games. Rarities are based on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being rarest). I included all games with a rarity of 7 or 8 (there were no regular 9's or 10's). I left out all of the Lightspan games (has anyone ever seen these anywhere?...I know I haven't) and any of the promotional releases (Elemental Gearbolt Assasin's Case Edition). What's left are the games you may actually see at your local game store for sale. My question is, which of these are actually worth the trouble of finding (and in many cases, paying)?

Rarity 8:
Fox Hunt (Capcom)
Psychic Detective (EA)
Team Buddies (Midway)

Rarity 7:
Braindead 13 (Crystal Dynamics)
Goal Storm '97 (Konami)
Guilty Gear (Atlus)
Herc's Adventures (LucasArts)
In The Hunt (THQ)
Magic Carpet (EA)
Motor Toon Grand Prix (SCEA)
Pool Hustler (Activision)
Power Serve 3D Tennis (Ocean)
Poy Poy (SCEA)
Psychic Force (Acclaim)
Punky Skunk (Jaleco)
Raystorm (Working Designs)
Return Fire (Time Warner)
Roadsters (Titus)
Shanghai: True Valor (Sunsoft)
Silverload (Vik Tokai)
Speed Racer (Jaleco)
Spot Goes to Hollywood (Virgin)
Star Fighter (Acclaim)
Starblade Alpha (Namco)
Strike Point (American Technos)
Striker Pro 2000 (Infogrames)
Syndicate Wars (EA)
Tail of the Sun (SCEA)
True Pinball (Ocean)
V-Tennis (Acclaim)
Viewpoint (EA)
X-Com: UFO Defense (Microprose)
Zoop (Viacom)

Of the games listed I can personally vouch for Motor Toon Grand Prix (fun racer from the GT team before they did GT), Raystorm (very good shooter), Silverload (great but tough point and click adventure) and Tail of the Sun (surpisingly fun caveman "roaming" game).

Luckily, I also just picked up a complete Team Buddies from Gamestop for $6 and change but the disc is really bad and I haven't been able to try it yet. I also recently snagged a mint Herc's Adventures from GS for under $5 but I haven't been able to play it yet.

Any other games on the list worth tracking down?

Xcom UFO defense was pretty good if I remember correctly. My roomate at the time played it for 9 hours straight one time.

Yeah Guilty Gear was a lot of fun. But now it's like playing Soul Blade vs Soul Calibur. Actually, Soul Blade is still a lot of fun I just played it 5 minutes ago! (not joking)

YOU WIN!

X-Com was a longbox title, right? I think that's why I have only been able to find it disc only, and in both cases the discs were scratched up beyond belief.

Cool, I've got a sealed Team Buddies. Return Fire is definitely worth searching for. It's originally a 3D0 game, but still stands as one of the best games you can buy for Playstation.

I have Fox Hunt for Playstation. I have never played it because it is still sealed. I found it at a Hastings in Wyoming a couple of years ago and bought it new for $5 because I knew it was rare. I have seen previews of it in a magazine. It is supposedly kind of like those murder mystery live action games you might find on a Sega Cd or a 3DO. It looks cheesy on the back even!

Motor Toon Gran Prix is supposed to be a very good game that I read about in a magazine but have never even seen that one, let alone played it.

some of these games are just rare because of limited runs, i.e. Tail of the Sun was a flaming turd I remember getting suckered into buying that flaming piece of %#@! retail $39.99 to be young & stupid...

Guilty Gear (Atlus)
Herc's Adventures (LucasArts)
In The Hunt (THQ)
Motor Toon Grand Prix (SCEA)

I have Herc's Adventures and Motor Toon Grand Prix. Both are excellent. Sadly my copies are beat to shit, like most of my Playstation games. In the Hunt I used to have along time ago long box and all. I beat it so many times, it's an excellent game. Guilty Gear, what more needs to be said?
The first Street Fighter sucked ass.
No it didn't... it introduce the button sequence that we all know and love in fighting games. SFII just perfected it and spawned a billion sequels.

I managed to get this off ebgames.com a few months ago for $1.99 BC. It's one of those games that no one really knows to be on the lookout for and is pretty fun to play. Team Buddies is also quite good, I recently found a complete copy and am currently trying to trade my disc only(in my TL).

Absolutely. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and was worth every penny of the relatively expensive price I paid for it. God, I'd love a DS version...

It's great... I have been looking for an original for years.
For all those games being "rare", a lot are really cheap.
Rare does not necessarily equal expensive, just like common doesn't necessarily equal cheap.

Lol. I thought the topic said scariest. And then I was wondering why none of the titles were scary, and why only rare ones were posted.

:)

It seems like a really good time to buy cheap & rare PSX games. I'm sure some time into the life of the PS3 people will want to start collecting their old PSX collection again.
TEAM BUDDIES rocks the fucking house! :)

X-COM is also awesome!

I had both of them... once :(
I like your Rollins sig.

But, staying on point, I also hear Team Buddies is great. I also hear Poy Poy is good for multiplayer. Raystorm's a decent space shooter -- one of the better PSone ones. I've been looking for Speed Racer casually for a while. It fetches under $25 on Ebay from my research.

My wife has interest in Motor Toon Grand Prix after hearing about it on TechTV recently...I saw some on ebay, but Motor Toon Grand Prix 2 was not to be found on ebay...

I know where I can pick up a sealed magic carpet in the longbox for $10, and I believe I shall do just that today.

The 2nd one was a Japanese only title I believe. I remember hearing it was better than the first, according to the import previews they did in GameFan magazine. It will probably be tough to find in the US though.

I finally got around to playing my scratched-up-to-Hell copy of Team Buddies I got last week. It's a fun little game...well worth the $6 I paid.

Actually, the Motor Toon Grand Prix released here was the 2nd one released in Japan. The first one never got a US release.

I just found another copy of Herc's Adventures (unfortunately without case and manual) but it was 10 bucks less that advertised at GS, so my wife didnt mind, since we were looking for it for her... funny game...

didn't have a clue that zoop was so underproduced (a "decent" puzzler)... still have mine in the longcase at home

psychic detective is good for a laugh, but thats about it. its one of those games that used live actors instead of actual gameplay. you could jump in and out of anyone's mind and hear their thoughs.

I concur with Help1, Poy Poy is damn good, but its mostly fun multi-player as its a Bomberman kinda run around bomb other guy. Cant recall if you can pick them up opponents too, but thats probably possible.

I saw a mint cond Raystorm (that is, if it came in a single disc CD case, and not double like some WD games) complete at a GS today. should I have picked it up (I think it was $4.99)?
