I thought this would make an interesting topic...

In honor of Halloween. Let's hear them and what was the scariest moment in the game(s)?

I don't know about overall scariest game, but the regenerators in Dead Space are possibly the scariest part of any game for me. Especially the one in Dead Space 2.

Games that scared me?

The two of highest memory would be Silent Hill 1 and Dead Space 1.

Dead Space 1 is the only game in so many years to literally make me yell into the microphone in party chat and jump a bit. I haven't played a scary game since Silent Hill 1 that scared me as much as Dead Space 1.

Dead Space 2 had It's moments, but Dead Space 1 did the scare factor a lot better imho, despite that Dead Space 2 was still a insanely good game.

Silent Hill made me almost shit my pants when I played it on the PS1. I booted it up awhile ago and that game was still pretty damn scary, never forget walking in the aisle and encountering the monsters for the first time or hearing that damn siren and saying "oh shit...".

Weird, I thought Dead Space was only scary for the first couple of hours (indeed, it was very scary), but then it turns into mostly a shoot-em-up where you collect sweet weapons. It's odd too because I'm terrified by games quite easily.

Like, Ravenholme in Half Life 2. fuck that.

Also thought Demon's Souls was rather frightening since you know, it's actually dangerous.

After all these years, I still think Friday the 13th on NES is the scariest game I've ever played. Your heart would very nearly stop as soon as Jason randomly showed up on the screen - it was without warning and it was nearly impossible to escape. Turns out the game was also impossible to beat, but that's another story I guess.

Dead Space is the only game I've played that literally made me jump out of my seat.

The first hour or so of that game freaked me the freak out.

Hmm...a top 10 list? Pretty damned ambitious.

Some off the top of my head:

Resident Evil 2 really got me back in the day. Up late at night in a huge loft apartment, rain, thunder and lightning battering 16' windows overlooking Philadelphia...and then, just when I thought I was totally safe...something 'got me' and I screamed like a 5-year old boy who thought he saw a ghost in his closet.

Dead Space 1 got me more than a few times, too, atmosphere more than anything. But yeah, I jumped. (Haven't played 2 yet, so can't say.)

And Eternal Darkness creeped me out quite a few times - wasn't expecting a lot of things it threw at me and yeah, I dropped the controller a few times.

Undying had a nice eerie-thing going, too, but I doubt it'd scare me much these days. Perhaps Amnesia would do the deed?

I'm sure I'm missing a few other games, but still wish there were more scares out there.

1) Amnesia: The Dark Descent
2) Silent Hill 1/2
3) Dead Space
4) Resident Evil Series
5) Alan Wake

Silent Hill 2 freaked me out a bit but Resident Evil 2 was the only game that made me jump. I never thought Dead Space was scary it was just a pretty awesome shooting game to me.

When I was 11 or 12 years old playing the original Doom; the way the lighting was dark used to scare me the first run through... but once you sank 100+ hours into you started to be able to anticipate where the enemies were going to respawn from

I'm very surprised Fatal Frame hasn't been mentioned. By far the scariest game I've played. It's so scary, I looked up the walkthrough so I could be better prepared for the scary moments.

Although not a scary game, but there was a level in Vampire: The Masquerade that was based in a hotel that legit freaked me out a few times during a playthrough. One of my all time favorite levels of any game ever.

It wasn't IMPOSSIBLE to beat, you just had to completely beat Jason 3 times...once I got to the third day but I only had two kids left so it was pretty much over at that point...

Nothing pissed me off more than having a good weapon like the pitchfork and accidently running over a rock...

My wife still boots up the NES just to play that game. I never was a fan of the game, but she can play for a good hour or two.

The scariest game I played growing up was Doom, with the lights off. I'd shit my pants everytime I came around a corner in that game.

Dead Space 1 & 2 were both great at overall mood and lots of jump out of your seat moments (even scarier when there ISN'T an enemy there).

I didn't play any of the earlier Resident Evil's other than at friend's house growing up - but 4 and 5 both had some good jumps to them.

Other than that - Alan Wake had some good jumps, but they were mostly suspense-based. I haven't been really SCARED since I was 11 and playing Doom in the dark.

Umm Silent Hill 1-3
Haunting Ground
Dead Space 1-2
SMT: Nocturne
Fatal Frame1-3
Resident evil 2
Clock Tower 3

More than 10 but those are probably the scariest I played. On a more personal note, the scariest games I ever played were fallout 3 and New Vegas. Sure it is not typical horror, but the setting and overall story/themes were scary as hell to me. Even though the idea is rooted in a kind of humor and the stories are never focused exclusively on horror it is none the less one of the more terrifying games when you sit down and think about the actual world the characters inhabit and the history of what was done inside of it. IDK the games are deeply terrifying to me for some reason, which is why I play them so much.

Ohh sh** I completely forgot about that game. Old school horror!!!!
Siren:Blood Curse and the Resident Evil 1 remake.
I remember the first siren and it was annoying. Especially the parts with the shooting sentries.

The first one had a ton of problems which kept it from being a great game.Blood Curse fixed most of the issues with the first such as giving you a detailed map which showed where to go.Also made sight jacking better by making you have a split screen view instead of having to stand still.

I rarely find games scary (although I still like horror games for other reasons), but the latter half of Dead Space was scary to me despite the arsenal you have at that point. It was scary for me because of the fear of being overwhelmed. I was always worried when I walked into a room that a bunch of enemies would surround me, so I'd stick to a corner while swarms of enemies would come at me, and I'd have my trusty force gun, but then of course something would pop out of the ceiling above me or wall behind me, and I'd have to move. So yeah, any game that plays on my claustrophobia like that can be intense.

If you want to talk pure fear factor, then Demon's Souls is #1. Cheap scares from Dead Space (can't believe people think it is scary; completely predictable yawnfest) are nothing compared to real fear of losing something valuable in a game. Try it, I don't think you'll ever experience such a sense of dread in your life when facing a tough boss for the first time.

Now if you want to talk creep factor, then Silent Hill is where it's at.

The budget PC game, Blair Witch Project: Rustin Parr scared me so much I had to sut down my PC and turn on all the light in my apartment.
Clock Tower 3
Of all the games in one of the best horror series, you listed 3? :cold:

If this means you haven't played Clock Tower on the SNES/SuperFamicon or PS1, do so. These should be near the top of any horror game list.

I listed 3 because I like it the best. I was young when I played the first few and was aggravated by the point and clicking of the game. I remember I had just finished Silent Hill one and the system was a step back for me. But I was like 10 at the time so take from that what you will.

That's nothing, at least you keep stuff in Demon's Souls, if I recall Steel Battalion for the XBOX had an eject button on the controller and if you didn't eject before your mech exploded the game deleted your save file.

OK, for the tens of people who owned it lol.

Silent Hill 2 - played this while dorming. Me and my room mate would play until the wee hours of the night, taking turns and whenever he had to go have a cigarette he wouldnt go out alone. Every footstep outside echoed like it did in the game an would make us jump. Fun times.
Dead Space 2 was a scary romp
Eternal Darkness was creepy too.

going to have to try Alan Wake and Call of Cthulu

my halloween game right now is costume quest though, not scary in the slightest but hella awesome.
I listed 3 because I like it the best. Playing 1 wasn't a enjoyable experience for me, the horror was top notch but I found myself more annoyed with the game than scared by it. Crappy point and clicking for the lose.
Kids these days

Have you tried the CTHO/John DeFoe quadrology by Yahtzee yet? They're free on PC on his site:

Man that game would elicit nothing but paranoia from me.

Surprised nobody mentioned Eternal Darkness or System Shock 2. Anyway came back to name a couple of more games that scared me, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream and the Penumbria series were pretty good.

Surprised nobody mentioned Eternal Darkness or System Shock 2.
I was never really scared by ED... they advertised the fact that the game would eff with you in the previews so I came into it expecting weird shit to start happening to my screen and such.

I don't think there's ever been a scary game for me, or at least not one that still maintains that scariness. Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark were creepy back in the day, especially when the dogs in RE jumped out of the window, but the games are pretty laughable to me these days. Watching Edward Carnaby and his ol' timey boxer stance for zombie punching is alot sillier now that I'm no longer 9. I've played so many scary games that I'm all but immune to jump scares now, so even those don't do much for me.

Now if we're talking panic, then there's quite a few games that do that to me. RE4, Dead Space, even Heart of Darkness... I've always been unnerved by the games that reward your failure by killing your character in a unpleasant way. It puts me on edge, I don't want my character to have their corpse shamed again so I'm kinda panicked to keep them alive.

FEAR Extraction Point. Not really scary, but the atmosphere was great,it was just you in a totally deserted city other than the replicas that were there. Not really a game but I would add the Half-Life 1 mod Afraid of Monsters Directors Cut.Has a Silent Hill like atomsphere to it,and it's worth checking out.

re2. first game i owned on my first ps1 never used one before so i didnt know how the controls worked and at the time i was very afraid of zombies and on top of that i did my first game at night so yeah i died so many times in that first section and the zombies sounded and looked so real at the time i was scared shitless of that game. id only play it in the daytime and if i wasnt home alone.

silent hill. the first time the town shifts on you and that god awful siren wails out over the town. my skin crawled everytime that happened.

re3 nemesis. the first time nemesis opens a door after you run into anther room to escape him.

re1 remake. red head zombies and that chick zombie.

the thing: anytime one of your temmates suddenly flips out and becomes a thing you never were sure when it would happen and with limited ammo and health packs it was always a better option to run like a bitch than fight lol.

deadspace 1: much like a thing moment when those fucked up alien posessed people starts coming at you from all over its hard not to be intimidated.

re games in general : giant anything spiders, snakes, sharks crocodiles they always pop up out of nowhere and you either run or waste ammo in hopes of killing them.

the suffering 1 and 2 the flashbacks and many of the enemy encounters were very intimidating and scary.

superman 64: its scary to think someone could take gold like superman and just completly fuck it up so bad its pretty much unplayable.

Not a necessarily scary but that one game cube title. The worse you did the more mental your character got. Then the game would mess with you making you think your volume is cutting out, or your character is dying, or the screen rotates, or makes you shut off your sister thinking it froze on you.

Edit: Eternal Darkness

I agree with most of the ones already mentioned, and I don't have any specific games to add, but I do have a story.

I bought Silent Hill 2 when it first came out from a gamestop. This was back when you could return *any* games within 7 days if you didn't like them. As I was probably underemployed if not completely unemployed at the time, I finished the game in about three days. The next day I took it back to the store to return it. As the cashier was processing my return, he asked why I wanted to return it. I told him the truth. I told him that it was an amazing game but it showed me things that I never want to see again.

I'll give it another spin once the upcoming HD compilation drops in price a couple times.
