Virtual Console Games Can Be Played With Gamecube Controller

Can you specify which controllers it will be possible to use for each of the VC games types (NES, SNES, PC Engine, N64)?

Nintendo: All virtual console games can be played using the Classic Controller or Nintendo GameCube pads. The Wii Remote can also be turned on its side and used as a traditional controller to play NES games. However, a game will only be playable with the control mechanism it was designed for. So, for example, you will play NES games with the D-pad, not an analogue stick or motion-sensitive functionality.

When using a mixture of Wii and GameCube controllers, the Wii Remote or Classic Controller will take priority. So if you have two Classic Controllers plugged in they instantly become player one and two regardless of how many GameCube pads are inserted.

Personally I'm happy that I never got rid of my NGC Hori Pad.

That last part is awfully interesting. Good to know I don't really have to bother with a classic controller unless I want to. Though I can't really imagine the GC controller feels great for SNES games.

I would seriously suggest ordering a Hori Pad. I got mine off ebay for like $15.

Why bother with those? The classic controller is the same layout with better button positioning and analog.

Is the virtual console controller compatible with GCN games? Not trying to be a jerk, but I do appreciate that aspect of the controller.

Hmmm interesting...I already own a classic Hori pad. I'm not sure if I need the VC controller now. NES-SNES could be the Hori pad. N64 up I could use the Wavebird.

This is great news. I ordered 2 Wavebirds, and now that I've seen the VC games, I'm not looking for that 5000 Pts/Classic Controller combo that was announced for Japan. So... ya. Wavebirds it is.
it looks like it would suck to play snes games with that controller because of the placement of the face buttons.

I'm still going to eventually get a classic controller, based almost solely on the fact that it looks cool. I like the button layout better than the GC controller as well and it will be interesting to see how the dual analogs work.

Nope. That question was answered in the article you posted:

GameCube games are played with GameCube pads. Can they be played with the Classic controller too, for those who don't actually have any GC pads?

Nintendo:
Nintendo GameCube games can only be played using Nintendo GameCube controllers. The Classic Controller will not work on these games

Urgh. I pre ordered and paid for a Classic Controller thinking that it would work for GC as well as VC games. I dunno if I should bother getting one now considering I can use my old GC controller on VC. I could put the $20 to a WiiPoints card or a Zelda Strategy guide.

I guess I'll be buying a few wavebirds.
Edit: I looks like Sams Club.com has Wavebirds for $28 shipped. I may have to order a pair with my dad's Sams Club account.
Once again I am thankful my CAG brethren helped me get 4 Wavebirds in preparation for the Wii.
QFT. Thanks to fellow CAGs that got me 4 wired controllers and a wavebird...I doubt the wavebird will work without having to break that flap first. Let's hope it's detachable.

I've seen pictures of the Wavebird reciever in the Wii's Gamecube controller ports. Don't worry they fit just fine and you wont break the flap.
