What's your opinion about the state of Final Fantasy?

Right now, there is a huge divide between gamers about Final Fantasy. For the most part, there is a sort-of separate civil war over JRPG-style gameplay, against Devil May Cry-style action-oriented gameplay. But, the bigger issue is that the divide is over how "to attract gamers to Final Fantasy." The reason why Square Enix got away from JRPG's is because they wanted to attract the mass market. It costs a lot of money to develop video games today, this started around the time [Final Fantasy] XIII was released.

Since [Final Fantasy] XIII was released, Square Enix experimented with various styles of Action games, and this started earlier with the release of Kingdom Hearts, and until Final Fantasy XVI. It got polished in Final Fantasy VII Remake, and then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. To aid my point, I will link y'all to reviews, and videos. My own content.

The series has changed so much in the past 15 years that it's gotten rid of almost everything that drew me to the series in the first place.

When I look back at my favorite FFs (the PS1 ones), it was..
  • the huge world maps full of stuff to explore, usually more fun and interesting than the main story itself
  • customization to build your characters up in interesting ways (materia in FF7, junctions in FF8, the abilities you learn from equipment in FF9)
  • catchy, melody-driven soundtracks
  • really unique stories
I think all of that is pretty much gone from modern FFs now.
