Why do most games only use the first memory card slot on the PS2?

Why are there so many games that make you have your saved file in the first memory card? The second slot doesnt even seem necessary.

What I'm wondering is how hard can it be to make a game recognize both slots. It's a massive pain in the ass to go through all the loading, only to find you have to restart because the cards are switched. Just put in multi-card recognition for chrissakes.

i only use one memory card :p .. and its a third party mad catz memory card at that.. got my ps2 and the memory card sometime around its release date.. and i still havent used up my first ps2 memory card.

It sucks when you play PS1 games, cause then you have to switch back and forth.

The better question is: Why can't I keep the multitap in to play some games? I played some Champions of Norrath this week, went to play Samurai Warriors, then BAM! No controllers or memory cards detected!

Damn thats sweet, considering the multitap costs so much.

It's even worse on the Gamecube, since up until last week or so the only memory cards available were tiny. I have at least 4 of the things, and never can remember which one has what save. I sit there switching through them until I come across it. I can only assume the second slot "ain't nothin' but decoration". /groan

Dealing automatically with both slots in an intelligent manner is a trivial programming task. The blame is on Sony for not enforcing usability standards.

Wow you must play and save a lot of each game i have a ton of Gamecube games saved 30+ and only use a 59 and 251. I have an extra 251 if ever its needed. Unless you are running sports games or animal crossing?!?

The second slot is nice because it allows you to transfer data between the two cards... If you do it right then you can maximize the use of each card.

Animal Crossing, 2 games (mine & my wife's), PSO 1&2 and Ep. 3, and there are a few others that have really large saves. Large by GC standards anyway. It's ridiculous that they wanted so long to put out a decent size memory card. I have to manage my PS2 cards once every couple months or so, and I play it probably the most of my 3 systems.

The only time this was ever a problem for me was when I tried to use a Gameshark and wanted to put codes into a saved game. The Gameshark card has to go into slot 1, and the ps2 couldn't detect my saved game, or even the memory card itself, in slot 2. I rarely ever use the Gameshark anyway, usually just if I'm giving a game a second playthrough and want to sprint through it invincible or something, so it hasn't been too big of a pain.

I've got two PS2 memory cards, and it took me forever to fill the first one. I've probably had saves for around 40-50 games at one time or another, so I have had to occasionally just delete saves I don't care about anymore. Not a big deal.

Thank god someone finally brought this up. Yes, it pisses me off to a ridiculous extent how most programmers don't take the time to make it read both slots. Argh.

The only EA Sports games that support both slots are Tiger Woods, NCAA and Madden. And it sucks because the EA Sports Bio has to be in the first slot, and half the games don't support the second, so you have to get up and change them, really annoying.
